on 2005 data.

St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute is one of the most advanced
and comprehensive centers for cardiovascular medicine in Florida –
and beyond – providing patients with a full range of services and
technology for the diagnosis and treatment of adult and pediatric
heart conditions. The compassionate care that has been the hallmark
of St. Joseph's Hospital is combined with clinical excellence
to define St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute. St. Joseph's Hospital
has been recently recognized for service excellence by the J.D.
Power and Associates Distinguished Hospital Program. This distinction
acknowledges a strong commitment by St. Joseph's Hospital
to provide an outstanding inpatient experience.
The physicians who practice at St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute

and nursing staff in the Cardiac Catheterization and Electrophysiology
labs are Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certified.

The St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute team understands that
minutes matter in optimizing treatment outcomes for patients
experiencing Acute Myocardial Infarction (AMI). In embracing the
"time is muscle" concept, St. Joseph's Hospital has produced superior
outcomes compared to national performance standards for the
treatment of AMI. The St. Joseph's team is committed to individualized
care and adherence to nationally recognized, evidence-based
guidelines to reduce variation in care.
Anthony Pidala, M.D.
Medical Director, Emergency Department
Trauma Services
Dr. Pidala received his B.A. from the
University of South Florida and his M.D.
from the University of Miami.
He completed his internal medicine
residency at the University of South Florida
affiliated hospitals.
Dr. Pidala is certified by the American Board
of Emergency Medicine and the American
Board of Internal Medicine.
He joined St. Joseph's Hospital
medical staff in 1983.
The Cardiac Alert Team is a unique feature of St. Joseph's Hospital
Heart Institute's approach to meeting the needs of AMI patients.
These nurses facilitate the hand-off from Emergency Medical Services
(EMS) through the Emergency Center to the Catheterization Lab
expediting care for the AMI patient and serving as his/her personal
advocate. This team's dedicated focus is to eliminate delays and
provide seamless care for patients with AMI.

At St. Joseph's Hospital, a dedicated Cardiac Alert Team is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
to facilitate rapid triage to the Cardiac Catheterization Lab for a primary reperfusion strategy.
The Cardiac Alert program is designed to attain "door-to-balloon"
times for patients with AMI of less than 90 minutes, which is the
American College of Cardiology/Amercican Heart Association
(ACC/AHA) Guideline, to give the patient the best chance of
immediate and long-term survival. In 2005, the average door-toballoon
time at St. Joseph's Hospital was 85 minutes. In some cases,
St. Joseph's door-to-balloon times have been as low as 31 minutes.
St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute cared for 646 patients with
AMI in 2005 (an 8% increase compared to 2004). St. Joseph's
in-hospital mortality rate from AMI continues to decrease and
ranks within the best-performing 10% of facilities in the nation.

Cardiac Catheterization

Working with an experienced staff of nurses and technicians,
cardiologists at St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute have performed
more than 50,000 cardiac catheterizations over the last 25 years.
With four state-of-the-art laboratories and a team available around
the clock, St. Joseph’s is able to offer the community advanced
technology to diagnose and treat problems of the coronary
arteries and heart valves. More than 98% of St. Joseph’s cardiac
catheterization patients rate their experiences as "extremely
good" or "excellent."
Some of the services offered through St. Joseph's Hospital Heart
Institute include:
• Diagnostic left and right heart catheterization
• Percutaneous Coronary Intervention
• Stent implants – both bare metal and drug-eluting
• Valvuloplasty
St. Joseph's Offers the Full Range of Coronary
Revascularization Options
Bare metal stents have a restenosis rate of approximately 25%.
Drug-eluting stents have a restenosis rate of less than 10%. When
drug-eluting stents received FDA approval in 2003, St. Joseph's
Cardiac Catheterization Lab adopted the latest technology.
The percentage of drug-eluting stents used at St. Joseph's Hospital
Heart Institute (as a percentage of total stents used) has increased
over time to ensure the best outcomes for patients.

St. Joseph's cardiac catheterization team is available 24 hours a day,
7 days a week and is a critical component of St. Joseph's commitment
to expediting care for patients experiencing AMI. Availability
and commitment to meeting the needs of patients has led to a
significant reduction in the time from a patient's presentation to
St. Joseph’s Emergency Center to reperfusion. St. Joseph’s
catheterization team continues to beat the national "door-toballoon"
standard contributing to improved clinical outcomes.

St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute's electrophysiology laboratories
offer the latest technology for treatment of a wide range of heart
rhythm problems.
Services include:
• Pacemaker implantation, including biventricular pacemakers
• Implantable defibrillators, including biventricular defibrillators
• Ablation to control atrial fibrillation and other heart rhythm
irregularities
In 2005, close to 900 electrophysiology (diagnostic and ablation)
procedures and pacemaker and ICD implantation cases were

Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (CABG)
In 2005, 279 Isolated-CABG procedures were performed at
St. Joseph's Hospital. St. Joseph's in-hospital mortality rate was
0.71%, well below the national benchmark of 2% established
by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) national database.
St. Joseph's superior performance in 2005 has been sustained and
continues to improve.

Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery (cont.)
Off-pump surgery mechanically stabilizes the heart allowing
surgeons to work on multiple vessels without putting the patient
on the heart-lung machine. OPCAB surgery reduces blood utilization
and the incidence of complications such as atrial fibrillation,
impaired renal function and stroke. Consequently, these cases are
characterized by a shorter ICU stay, hospital stay and lower
mortality. St. Joseph's is proud to report that out of the 240
OPCAB procedures performed in 2005, there were no
in-hospital deaths (0% mortality).
Internal Mammary Artery Use
In addition to providing innovative approaches to adult cardiac
surgery, clinical outcomes data reflect a commitment to excellence
in patient care.
Arterial grafts are the preferred conduits for coronary revascularization
due to their longer-term effectiveness (when compared to vein
grafts). St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute's surgeons utilize
internal mammary arteries in a higher percentage of cases than
other surgeons in Florida and as compared to the national
benchmark set by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS).

Valve Surgery
Approximately five million Americans are diagnosed with heart
valve problems every year. St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute is
recognized nationwide as a leader in treating valvular heart disease.
When medications alone cannot control valve disease our surgeons
are experts in correcting these problems (using minimally invasive
techniques where appropriate) through procedures such as:

Following a heart attack or cardiac surgery, learning how to
prevent future problems and enjoy a full life is critical to a patient's
well-being. The rehabilitation program at St. Joseph's Hospital
Heart Institute is the only program in Tampa nationally
accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and
Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR).
The Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation program is a multi-dimensional
continuum of services for people with cardiac and/or pulmonary
diseases. It is staffed by an inter-disciplinary team of RNs,
respiratory therapists and exercise physiologists with the goal of
achieving and maintaining the individual's maximum level of
independence and functioning in the community. The program
combines supervised exercise, breathing techniques and education
tailored to the individual.
Rodney Randall, M.D.
Medical Director, Cardiac Rehabilitation
Dr. Randall received his B.A. from Kent State
University and his M.D. from Ross University.
He completed his internal medicine residency
and fellowship training in cardiology at
Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh).
Dr. Randall is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty
in Cardiovascular Disease.
He joined St. Joseph's Hospital medical staff
in 1994.
Women's-Only Cardiac Rehabilitation Study
In cooperation with the St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute,
the University of South Florida is conducting an innovative study
comparing a traditional cardiac rehabilitation program to an
individualized women’s-only cardiac rehabilitation program.

In 2002, the National Institute of Nursing Research at the National
Institutes of Health awarded Theresa Beckie, Ph.D, a $1.5 million
grant to compare the physiological and psychosocial outcomes of
women who completed cardiac rehabilitation in a traditional
program versus a women’s-specific, individualized, behavioralchange-focused
program, which Beckie helped develop. Dr. Beckie
is the first in the U.S. to study cardiac rehabilitation for women.
To be eligible, the patient must be a female with coronary artery
disease and have experienced one of the following in the past 12
months:
• Stable angina
• Heart attack
• Angioplasty and/or stent
• Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

PREVENTION

In addition to providing the best in treatment for those living
with heart disease or experiencing an acute cardiac event, St.
Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute is committed to helping members
of the community prevent the onset of heart disease or a first
heart attack.
In 2004, St. Joseph's Hospital Heart Institute and St. Joseph's
Women's Hospital combined efforts to create the Women's Healthy
Heart Initiative, the first primary prevention program in the Tampa
Bay area dedicated to helping members of the community understand
and reduce their risk for heart disease. St. Joseph's Women's
Healthy Heart Initiative was created to:
• Increase awareness relating to heart disease risk and prevalence
• Provide direct access to screenings and individualized education
with an Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner who specializes
in heart health
• Facilitate access and referral to risk reduction services if increased
risk is identified
John C. Dormois, M.D.
Physician Advisor, St. Joseph's Women's Healthy
Heart Initiative
Dr. Dormois received his B.A. from Pittsburg
State University and his M.D. from the
University of Kansas.
He completed his internal medicine residency
and fellowship training in clinical pharmacology
and cardiology at Vanderbilt University.
Dr. Dormois is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty
in Cardiovascular Disease.
He joined St. Joseph's Hospital medical staff
in 1994.

In 2005, St. Joseph's commitment to preventing heart disease

• St. Joseph’s Women's Healthy Heart Initiative reached more
than 6,500 members of the community through educational
events and programs
• St. Joseph’s Women's Healthy Heart Center and St. Joseph's
Community Health team screened more than 2,900 members
of the community
• St. Joseph's Women's Healthy Heart Center with the Tampa Bay
Runners helped more than 100 women begin or maintain a
weekly fitness routine by providing 9 weeks of training clinics
leading to the Healthy Heart Women's Classic (a 5K walk/run)

The Morbidity and Mortality Conference serves as a venue for

St. Joseph's Children's Heart Center is a pre-eminent center for
the diagnosis and treatment of congenital and acquired heart
conditions in infants, children and teens. With one of the largest
pediatric cardiovascular programs in the southeast, St. Joseph's
Children's Hospital of Tampa is the regional referral source for
pediatric heart surgery, and for the diagnosis and treatment of
congenital heart defects before and after birth. The success rate for
diagnosing and treating complex cardiac conditions exceeds that
of larger well-known heart centers around the country.
Pediatric Cardiology Services
Pediatric Cardiology at St. Joseph's Children's Heart Center provides
both non-invasive and invasive services including:

Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery
The pediatric cardiovascular surgical team at St. Joseph's Children's
Hospital performs more than 350 cardiac surgical procedures a
year to treat all types of congenital and acquired cardiac disorders.
Highlights of the program include:
• One of the largest pediatric cardiovascular surgical volumes
in the Southeastern United States
• Nationally known as a comprehensive center specializing in
hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS)/single-ventricle heart
disease
• 99% surgical survival, up to 30 days after surgery and 96.4%
long-term surgical survival
• Dedicated family-centered pediatric cardiac intensive care unit
with single-family, private rooms
In addition, our cardiovascular team surgically manages all types
of congenital and acquired cardiac defects including the primary
repair and palliation of complex congenital heart defects in
neonates. Areas of surgical specialization include:
• Repair and palliation of hypoplastic left heart syndrome
(HLHS)
• Bi-directional Glenn shunt
• Extra-cardiac Fontan procedure with less than 2% mortality

Dr. Rogal received his B.A. from
Princeton University and his M.D.
from Columbia University.
He completed his internal medicine
residency at Bellvue Hospital (New York)
and Presbyterian Hospital (New York)
and fellowship training at Bronx Municipal
Hospital Center.
Dr. Rogal is certified by the American
Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty
in Cardiovascular Disease.
He joined St. Joseph's Hospital
medical staff in 1988.
Robert Lazzara, M.D.
Chief, Department of Cardiovascular Surgery
Dr. Lazzara received his B.S.
and M.S. from Tulane University
and his M.D. from Emory University.
He completed his general surgery residency
at the University of South Florida and
fellowship training in cardiothoracic surgery
at Allegheny General Hospital (Pittsburgh).
Dr. Lazzara is certified by the American
Board of Thoracic Surgery.
He joined St. Joseph's Hospital
medical staff in 2001.
