Systematic Theology<br />

ST 924 The Theology of Adoption<br />

Purpose:<br />

• A detailed investigation of the importance of adoption<br />

in Pauline, biblical, and historical theology.<br />

Topics covered include the historical neglect of the doctrine, its<br />

renewed treatment in contemporary theology, and its place in pastoral<br />

theology. Course work includes the preparation and presentation<br />

of detailed investigative papers.<br />

ST 932 The <strong>Westminster</strong> Standards<br />

Purpose:<br />

• To exposit the theology of the <strong>Westminster</strong> Assembly by<br />

means of a study of the <strong>Westminster</strong> Confession of Faith<br />

Topics covered include the origin and convening of the <strong>Westminster</strong><br />

Assembly.<br />

Winter term. (Not given in <strong>2009</strong>-<strong>2010</strong>.) Mr. Ferguson.<br />

ST 944 The Philosophical Theology<br />

of Thomas Aquinas<br />

Purpose:<br />

• To begin to understand some of the basic<br />

elements of Thomas’ philosophical theology<br />

• To evaluate Thomas’ philosophical theological<br />

view of knowledge and cognition<br />

• To critically assess Thomas in light of<br />

historic, Reformed orthodoxy<br />

• To appreciate those elements in Thomas’ philosophical<br />

theology that have their basis in Scripture<br />

Topics covered will include, primarily, the doctrine of God, but will<br />

also include Thomas’ view of knowledge, the metaphysics of the<br />

Incarnation, and the doctrine of providence and suffering.<br />

ST 961 The Theology of John Calvin<br />

Purpose:<br />

• To study the sources and development of Calvin’s theology<br />

Topics covered include the Institutes of the Christian Religion.<br />

ST 972 Calvin’s Doctrine of the Holy Spirit<br />

Purpose:<br />

• To research Calvin’s teaching on the person and<br />

work of the Spirit, with attention to his expositions<br />

in the Institutes, Commentaries, and Treatises<br />

Seminar presentation required.<br />

ST 991 Themes in Ecclesiology<br />

Purpose:<br />

• To examine biblical teaching and analyze<br />

expositions of the marks, structure, and ministry<br />

of the church in Christian theology<br />
