• A computer is viewed as a typewriter to merely<br />

type out a worksheet or a test.<br />

• Teachers are not prepared to develop <strong>the</strong>mselves.<br />

They wait <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Education Ministry to suggest a<br />

course that <strong>the</strong>y should complete. If a field of study<br />

does not affect <strong>the</strong> specialist area of teaching, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

are not prepared to self-improve.<br />

4. Suggestions<br />

• Change is difficult. This is an established fact.<br />

Teachers need to be helped in this field by giving<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> knowledge to allow <strong>the</strong> computer to<br />

become a friendly tool.<br />

• The Ministry of Education, in partnership with<br />

private institutions, needs to become involved with<br />

<strong>the</strong> in-service training of teachers.<br />

• The government be<strong>for</strong>e <strong>the</strong> implementation of<br />

equipment /curriculum/ procedures should provide<br />

in-depth training of all personnel that are involved.<br />

The cascade method of training has not been<br />

successful. Teachers that do not go to <strong>the</strong> course<br />

are found to be lacking in know-how.<br />

• Training is <strong>the</strong> key to success. IT skills need to be<br />

developed in earnest in <strong>the</strong> educational scenario.<br />

• Educators need to be motivated to take action <strong>for</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>mselves so as to become involved in developing<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir skills in <strong>the</strong> use of <strong>the</strong> computers.<br />

• Provide enrichment programs that teachers can use<br />

fruitfully <strong>for</strong> self-motivation <strong>and</strong> development as<br />

well as improving <strong>the</strong> methods of teaching.<br />

• IT offers numerous creative methods of teaching<br />

<strong>and</strong> learning that teachers can take advantage of.<br />

• Introducing IT skills to primary school children has<br />

great advantages. It provides children with a world<br />

of knowledge that <strong>the</strong>y can enjoy. Computers<br />

provide an exciting way of staying in touch with <strong>the</strong><br />

world. Children are exposed to h<strong>and</strong>s-on training.<br />

The computer enables <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> opportunity to<br />

explore <strong>the</strong> unknown without fear. Ma<strong>the</strong>matics/<br />

technology/languages can be learnt <strong>and</strong> taught with<br />

enthusiasm <strong>and</strong> self-correcting devices. This<br />

enables children to learn at <strong>the</strong>ir own pace.<br />

• The early exposure to computers places children in<br />

good st<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>for</strong> future career choices.<br />

• It is imperative that at all levels of education computer<br />

awareness is inculcated into <strong>the</strong> education<br />

system. This allows <strong>the</strong> country an opportunity to<br />

tap into own human resources ra<strong>the</strong>r than<br />

depending on <strong>the</strong> outside world.<br />

• A support system in alliance with <strong>the</strong> business<br />

world should be set up. This will provide easy<br />

access to enable educators <strong>the</strong> chance to build on<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir confidence levels <strong>and</strong> new methodology.<br />

• Continuous workshops need to be held. These<br />

workshops must be conducted by qualified IT<br />

personnel.<br />

• Computers are an excellent teaching tool <strong>for</strong><br />

disabled students. According to Christopher Nolan<br />

in his book Dam Burst of Dreams – “If computers<br />

science can give me a voice, <strong>the</strong>n everyone else<br />

who is similarly afflicted st<strong>and</strong>s a chance of being<br />

freed.”<br />

• Establish a twinning system where private schools<br />

<strong>and</strong> public schools can benefit from one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

Educators from community schools are encouraged<br />

to seek help from <strong>the</strong>ir colleagues in <strong>the</strong> private<br />

schools to improve on <strong>the</strong>ir IT skills. A total<br />

segregation between <strong>the</strong> two sectors of schools<br />

should be discouraged.<br />

5. Conclusion<br />

• Educators need to underst<strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

responsible <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own learning.<br />

• They are free to determine <strong>the</strong>ir own goals. Each<br />

educator needs to reflect on <strong>the</strong>ir own experiences<br />

in life <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y need to decide on what <strong>the</strong>y would<br />

like to focus <strong>the</strong>ir energies on.<br />

• IT training <strong>for</strong> teachers is vital as a tool to train <strong>the</strong><br />

future generation effectively.<br />

• The wagon needs to start rolling in earnest. We<br />

need to tap into our future resources so that <strong>the</strong><br />

African countries can become a <strong>for</strong>ce to be<br />

reckoned with in <strong>the</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation technology arena.<br />

The aims of Vocational Education <strong>and</strong> Training are to<br />

provide <strong>the</strong> work qualifications <strong>and</strong> skills dem<strong>and</strong>ed in<br />

a given social <strong>and</strong> economic context, <strong>and</strong> to contribute<br />

towards <strong>the</strong> implementation of national policies with<br />

regard to employment promotion, poverty eradication,<br />

private sector promotion, increased productivity, added<br />

value <strong>and</strong> enhanced competition in both local <strong>and</strong><br />

global markets.
