Award Winners Annual Report 2012 Our Business 2 Hare Inn, Leighton Buzzard Community Hero Awards 2012 — National Winner The Hare was the first pub to be recognised as a ‘Pub Hub’ by PTSD Resolution, a charity that strives to help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress. The Hare has taken the scheme on by raising funds for the charity, arranging therapy sessions for sufferers, assisting in re-housing and providing a sympathetic setting for veterans. The Hare’s commitment to its community has also been recognised by the Leighton-Linslade Town Council who made the manager, Jim Woolley, an Honorary Burgess in 2012 for his services to the community. White Swan, Blyth Royal Oak Inn, Appleby-in- Westmorland Great British Pub Awards 2012 – Best Tenanted/Leased Pub We are delighted that the Royal Oak was announced as winner of the Best Tenanted/ Leased Pub category at the prestigious Great British Pub Awards. Publicans Kyle and Janice MacRae credited their success to the fact that they have reinvested the profits they have made in the pub as part of a 25 year plan, investing in good quality letting rooms to help support the excellent pub and restaurant. Great British Pub Awards 2012 – Best Newcomer, Yorkshire, North East and Scotland Region Within their first year of trading, Ms Claire Wheeler and the team at the White Swan at Blyth had not only been awarded entry into the Good Food Guide 2013, but they had also been crowned a finalist and regional winner at the 2012 Great British Pub Awards in the Best Newcomer category. Ms Wheeler was overwhelmed and honoured to have been awarded these accolades and thanked Enterprise for its continuing support.
Community Hero Awards Pictures – clockwise: Our 2012 Community Hero Award winners National winner: Hare Inn, Leighton Buzzard Regional winner: Plough Inn, Wellington Regional winner: Hinds Head, Stockport Our Community Hero Awards were created this year to honour those Publicans who make inspiring contributions to their community. The awards inspired applications from across the nation, from which 18 were chosen as the Regional Winners of 2012. The local pub has always been a focus for local life. At a time when community support has never been so important, many Publicans are going above and beyond their daily routine of pulling pints and serving patrons. The Publicans for each of the winning pubs were invited to the Community Hero Awards ceremony in late September to enjoy an evening of celebration and to each receive their award of £5,000 to further fund and support the great work they already do in their communities. This special event was attended by all of the winning Publicans, as well as the judging panel which was made up of prominent industry and community figures, selected for their experience or their background in community or charitable affairs. From those 18 regional heroes at the awards ceremony, our National Winner was revealed to be The Hare Inn in Leighton Buzzard, proving itself to be a true community pub in a variety of ways, from organising local events to benefit veterans and the homeless, to allowing local teams and committees to use the pub as a regular meeting place. Having helped over 150 local veterans and raising over £20,000 for the cause so far, The Hare Inn was the first pub to be recognised as a ‘Pub Hub’ by PTSD Resolution, a charity that strives to help veterans suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder reintegrate into a normal work and family life. Our National Community Hero will benefit from a further £5,000 to invest in their community initiative and Publicans Jim and Naomi Woolley plan to use the £10,000 Community Hero Award to further the support services they offer the exservice personnel, as well as extend the ‘Pub Hub’ concept across the country.
