The Royal Mil<strong>it</strong>ary College (RMC) Duntroon<br />
is Australia’s f<strong>in</strong>est leadership college. It’s<br />
famous for <strong>it</strong>s long <strong>an</strong>d proud trad<strong>it</strong>ion of<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d develop<strong>in</strong>g some of our country’s<br />
most accomplished leaders. To graduate<br />
from RMC Duntroon, you’ll need dedication,<br />
comm<strong>it</strong>ment <strong>an</strong>d amb<strong>it</strong>ion. It won’t be easy,<br />
but the rewards will be great.<br />
RMC is s<strong>it</strong>uated w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> magnificent grounds<br />
at Duntroon, C<strong>an</strong>berra. This is where you’ll<br />
live <strong>an</strong>d tra<strong>in</strong> for 18 months. When you’ve<br />
completed your tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, you’ll graduate<br />
w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>an</strong> Associate Diploma <strong>in</strong> Personnel<br />
Adm<strong>in</strong>istration. Most import<strong>an</strong>tly, you’ll<br />
assume the r<strong>an</strong>k of Lieuten<strong>an</strong>t <strong>an</strong>d beg<strong>in</strong> your<br />
career as <strong>an</strong> officer <strong>in</strong> the Australi<strong>an</strong> Army.<br />
To be eligible for entry <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> RMC Duntroon you<br />
need <strong>to</strong> be between 17 <strong>an</strong>d 48 years of age.<br />
Requirements c<strong>an</strong> vary between states <strong>an</strong>d<br />

You’ll be study<strong>in</strong>g or have completed Year 12,<br />
w<strong>it</strong>h acceptable results <strong>in</strong> at least four subjects<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g English. After apply<strong>in</strong>g, you’ll go<br />
through a three-part selection process which<br />
will assess your physical <strong>an</strong>d mental f<strong>it</strong>ness <strong>an</strong>d<br />
your overall su<strong>it</strong>abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> <strong>become</strong> <strong>an</strong> officer.<br />
Your 18 months at RMC Duntroon will be<br />
extremely challeng<strong>in</strong>g. However, if you<br />
thrive on <strong>an</strong> active lifestyle, you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d that<br />
the rewards are great. You’ll be <strong>in</strong>volved<br />
<strong>in</strong> all sorts of mil<strong>it</strong>ary <strong>an</strong>d social activ<strong>it</strong>ies,<br />
<strong>an</strong>d also have personal time <strong>to</strong> yourself.<br />
Sport plays a huge role <strong>in</strong> Army life. RMC<br />
Duntroon boasts f<strong>an</strong>tastic sport<strong>in</strong>g facil<strong>it</strong>ies.<br />
You’ll spend several hours a week tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>an</strong>d play<strong>in</strong>g sport, <strong>an</strong>d there are <strong>an</strong>y number<br />
of team <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>dividual sports from which <strong>to</strong><br />
choose. You’ll also have the opportun<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> get<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> adventure tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g activ<strong>it</strong>ies like rock<br />
climb<strong>in</strong>g, wh<strong>it</strong>ewater raft<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d abseil<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Your accommodation at RMC Duntroon will<br />
be comfortable, practical <strong>an</strong>d private. You’ll<br />
enjoy great food, w<strong>it</strong>h plenty of variety—enough<br />
<strong>to</strong> satisfy the biggest appet<strong>it</strong>es. All <strong>in</strong> all, <strong>it</strong><br />
won’t take long for you <strong>to</strong> feel right at home.<br />
Probably the best th<strong>in</strong>g about life at RMC<br />
is the mateship. Over 18 months, you’ll go<br />
through a lot w<strong>it</strong>h your fellow cadets. W<strong>it</strong>hout<br />
doubt, m<strong>an</strong>y of the friends you make at<br />
RMC Duntroon will be your mates for life.<br />
Courses at RMC Duntroon start <strong>in</strong> J<strong>an</strong>uary <strong>an</strong>d<br />
July each year. Your first six weeks will consist<br />
of <strong>in</strong><strong>it</strong>ial tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. You’ll take part <strong>in</strong> a rigorous<br />
schedule, which will equip you w<strong>it</strong>h the core<br />
mil<strong>it</strong>ary skills. There’s no deny<strong>in</strong>g that you’ll f<strong>in</strong>d<br />
<strong>it</strong> dem<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g, both physically <strong>an</strong>d mentally.<br />
The course at RMC is divided <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> three<br />
22-week terms, the first term is called Third<br />
Class. Dur<strong>in</strong>g this term, you’ll cover <strong>to</strong>pics like<br />
basic mil<strong>it</strong>ary skills, first aid, <strong>in</strong>f<strong>an</strong>try m<strong>in</strong>or<br />
tactics, navigation, weapons tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, leadership,<br />
mil<strong>it</strong>ary his<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>an</strong>d communication skills.<br />
Next, you’ll move <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> Second Class. Here<br />
you’ll focus on comm<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d leadership<br />
skills at section <strong>an</strong>d pla<strong>to</strong>on levels. You’ll<br />
also study mil<strong>it</strong>ary technology <strong>an</strong>d science,<br />
battle tactics <strong>an</strong>d basic adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />
Your tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g will be completed w<strong>it</strong>h First<br />
Class, where you’ll get more practice at<br />
lead<strong>in</strong>g troops at pla<strong>to</strong>on level. You’ll spend<br />
time on m<strong>an</strong>agement <strong>an</strong>d leadership<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, as well as strategic studies. By the<br />
end of First Class, you’ll have all the skills<br />
<strong>to</strong> comm<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d lead a team of soldiers.<br />
Just prior <strong>to</strong> graduation, you’ll be<br />
appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>to</strong> one of the Army’s<br />
specialised br<strong>an</strong>ches, known as corps.<br />
For example, the Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Corps<br />
is responsible for tr<strong>an</strong>sport of Army<br />
personnel <strong>an</strong>d all k<strong>in</strong>ds of equipment via<br />
l<strong>an</strong>d, air <strong>an</strong>d sea. Corps allocation is based<br />
on your preference, compet<strong>it</strong>iveness <strong>an</strong>d<br />
availabil<strong>it</strong>y of pos<strong>it</strong>ions. In<strong>it</strong>ially you’ll be<br />
required <strong>to</strong> complete several weeks of <strong>in</strong>service<br />
corps tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d familiarisation.<br />
You’ll then be posted <strong>to</strong> your un<strong>it</strong>,<br />
where you may f<strong>in</strong>d yourself tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />
troops through field exercises,<br />
tactical assaults or m<strong>an</strong>ag<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>y<br />
number of v<strong>it</strong>al Army functions.<br />
You don’t need mil<strong>it</strong>ary experience, you just<br />
have <strong>to</strong> be will<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> prove yourself. We will<br />
const<strong>an</strong>tly challenge you <strong>to</strong> discover <strong>what</strong><br />
k<strong>in</strong>d of leader you’ll make. We’ll then tra<strong>in</strong> you<br />
<strong>to</strong> <strong>become</strong> <strong>an</strong> even better one. You’ll learn<br />
everyth<strong>in</strong>g from decision-mak<strong>in</strong>g skills <strong>to</strong><br />
h<strong>an</strong>dl<strong>in</strong>g personnel <strong>an</strong>d project m<strong>an</strong>agement.<br />
In short, we equip you w<strong>it</strong>h everyth<strong>in</strong>g you<br />
need <strong>to</strong> <strong>become</strong> <strong>an</strong> Army Officer. Once you’ve<br />
graduated as a Lieuten<strong>an</strong>t, you could be<br />
immediately put <strong>in</strong> charge of up <strong>to</strong> 30 troops.<br />
