Graduate entry<br />

If you’re a degree-qualified professional, the<br />

Army c<strong>an</strong> offer you a career w<strong>it</strong>h a<br />

real difference. You’ll enjoy the sort of<br />

exc<strong>it</strong>ement, challenges <strong>an</strong>d job satisfaction<br />

that you’ll rarely encounter <strong>in</strong> civili<strong>an</strong> life.<br />

The Army employs everyone from doc<strong>to</strong>rs<br />

<strong>to</strong> IT specialists. You’ll f<strong>in</strong>d each of these<br />

jobs expla<strong>in</strong>ed more fully <strong>in</strong> step three of<br />

this brochure. When you’re appo<strong>in</strong>ted as a<br />

Graduate Officer, you’ll complete your <strong>in</strong><strong>it</strong>ial<br />

officer tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at RMC Duntroon <strong>in</strong> C<strong>an</strong>berra.<br />

Usually, this course will be conducted <strong>in</strong> the<br />

first year of your appo<strong>in</strong>tment, depend<strong>in</strong>g on<br />

the date of your appo<strong>in</strong>tment <strong>an</strong>d when the<br />

courses are conducted. The course is run over<br />

<strong>five</strong> weeks, <strong>an</strong>d gives <strong>an</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction <strong>to</strong> the<br />

basics of be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong> officer <strong>in</strong> the Army.<br />

If you are a degree-qualified professional<br />

that w<strong>an</strong>ts <strong>to</strong> pursue a job <strong>in</strong> the Army that<br />

is unrelated <strong>to</strong> your degree, you will then be<br />

required <strong>to</strong> undertake <strong>an</strong> 18 month course<br />

at RMC. You will then graduate from RMC<br />

as a General Service Officer (GSO) that will<br />

give you the option <strong>to</strong> be employed <strong>in</strong> a large<br />

variety of officer jobs throughout the Army.<br />

To be eligible for graduate entry, you should<br />

first have the appropriate degree qualification.<br />

You should also fall w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> the prescribed age<br />

lim<strong>it</strong>s, which vary accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> pos<strong>it</strong>ion.<br />

After apply<strong>in</strong>g, you’ll go through a three-part<br />

selection process <strong>to</strong> assess your physical <strong>an</strong>d<br />

mental f<strong>it</strong>ness <strong>an</strong>d your su<strong>it</strong>abil<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> <strong>become</strong><br />

<strong>an</strong> officer. Your <strong>in</strong><strong>it</strong>ial appo<strong>in</strong>tment will usually<br />

be for a period of three years, w<strong>it</strong>h the first 18<br />

months be<strong>in</strong>g probationary.<br />

medical scheme<br />

If you already hold <strong>an</strong> appropriate degree<br />

qualification, you could be sponsored by the<br />

Army <strong>to</strong> qualify as a medical pract<strong>it</strong>ioner. If<br />

you’re accepted <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> the scheme, you’ll do<br />

a four-year degree course at <strong>an</strong>y Australi<strong>an</strong><br />

univers<strong>it</strong>y that offers a graduate medical<br />

program. After complet<strong>in</strong>g two years<br />

residency at a teach<strong>in</strong>g hosp<strong>it</strong>al of your<br />

choice, you’ll beg<strong>in</strong> your career as a Medical<br />

Officer <strong>in</strong> the Army.<br />

While study<strong>in</strong>g for your medical degree,<br />

you’ll receive a generous salary as well as<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g all of your tu<strong>it</strong>ion fees paid for. In<br />

add<strong>it</strong>ion, all reasonable costs related <strong>to</strong><br />

ga<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g admission <strong>to</strong> the course, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

application fees <strong>an</strong>d travel costs, c<strong>an</strong> be<br />

reimbursed. When you graduate from the<br />

scheme, you’ll <strong>in</strong>cur a return of service<br />

obligation equal <strong>to</strong> the length of your<br />

univers<strong>it</strong>y studies (but exclud<strong>in</strong>g periods of<br />

compulsory residency), plus 12 months.<br />

SPONSORSHIP<br />

The Army offers Undergraduate<br />

Sponsorship that allows you <strong>to</strong> study at<br />

the univers<strong>it</strong>y of your choice throughout<br />

Australia. To be eligible, you must<br />

have successfully completed the first<br />

year of one of the follow<strong>in</strong>g degrees<br />

—Medical, Dental, Nurs<strong>in</strong>g, Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Bus<strong>in</strong>ess, Arts, Science or Law. As <strong>an</strong><br />

ADF Sponsored Undergraduate, you will<br />

receive enormous benef<strong>it</strong>s that are hard<br />

<strong>to</strong> f<strong>in</strong>d <strong>in</strong> civili<strong>an</strong> life. For <strong>in</strong>st<strong>an</strong>ce, <strong>in</strong>stead<br />

of hav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> work part-time <strong>to</strong> support<br />

yourself at univers<strong>it</strong>y, we will actually<br />

pay you up <strong>to</strong> $31,900p.a. <strong>to</strong> study for<br />

your degree, then upon graduation, we’ll<br />

guar<strong>an</strong>tee you a career <strong>in</strong> the Army <strong>in</strong><br />

the profession you’re qualified <strong>in</strong>. Plus we<br />

will pay your tu<strong>it</strong>ion fees, your prescribed<br />

textbooks, as well as your student union<br />

<strong>an</strong>d library fees. Other benef<strong>it</strong>s <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

free medical <strong>an</strong>d dental care as well as<br />

subsidised meals <strong>an</strong>d accommodation.<br />

While you complete univers<strong>it</strong>y studies<br />

you will be required <strong>to</strong> complete parttime<br />

mil<strong>it</strong>ary tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at a univers<strong>it</strong>y<br />

regiment dur<strong>in</strong>g semester breaks. On<br />

graduation from univers<strong>it</strong>y you will then<br />

go on <strong>to</strong> complete 12 months tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g at<br />

RMC Duntroon <strong>in</strong> C<strong>an</strong>berra where you will<br />

graduate as a General Service Officer.<br />
