Pilot—Specialist<br />
Service Officer<br />
Another way of becom<strong>in</strong>g a pilot <strong>in</strong> the Army<br />
Aviation Corps is as a Specialist Service<br />
Officer (SSO). The SSO scheme generates<br />
short-term pilot appo<strong>in</strong>tments <strong>to</strong> operate the<br />
Army’s rapidly grow<strong>in</strong>g fleet of helicopters<br />
<strong>an</strong>d fixed-w<strong>in</strong>g aircraft. Your <strong>in</strong><strong>it</strong>ial fly<strong>in</strong>g will<br />
be w<strong>it</strong>h helicopter un<strong>it</strong>s, but you may convert<br />
<strong>to</strong> fixed w<strong>in</strong>g. You may also be selected<br />
<strong>to</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> as a Qualified Fly<strong>in</strong>g Instruc<strong>to</strong>r.<br />
Public Relations Officer<br />
The Army is no different from other large<br />
org<strong>an</strong>isations that need <strong>to</strong> communicate w<strong>it</strong>h<br />
the media on all matters relat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> their<br />
activ<strong>it</strong>ies. As a Public Relations Officer,<br />
you’ll need <strong>to</strong> be skilled <strong>in</strong> <strong>an</strong>swer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
media enquiries, issu<strong>in</strong>g media releases,<br />
m<strong>an</strong>ag<strong>in</strong>g PR pho<strong>to</strong>graphers <strong>an</strong>d respond<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pos<strong>it</strong>ively <strong>to</strong> public<strong>it</strong>y. Dur<strong>in</strong>g operations,<br />
you’ll gather material <strong>in</strong> the field <strong>an</strong>d<br />
liaise w<strong>it</strong>h media <strong>in</strong> the area of operations<br />
<strong>to</strong> help keep the public <strong>in</strong>formed.<br />
Radiographer<br />
As a Radiographer, you’ll enjoy modern, wellma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />
<strong>an</strong>d equipped facil<strong>it</strong>ies that feature<br />
the latest <strong>in</strong> diagnostic ultrasound un<strong>it</strong>s,<br />
mobile <strong>an</strong>d fixed image <strong>in</strong>tensifiers <strong>an</strong>d at<br />
some bases, the latest generation radiographic<br />
casualty un<strong>it</strong>s. W<strong>it</strong>h such equipment now<br />
available <strong>in</strong> Sydney, Brisb<strong>an</strong>e, Townsville <strong>an</strong>d<br />
Darw<strong>in</strong>, Radiographers are able <strong>to</strong> perform a<br />
broad r<strong>an</strong>ge of <strong>in</strong>vestigative procedures on<br />
mil<strong>it</strong>ary personnel no matter where they are<br />
stationed, both on base <strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong> Mobile Field<br />
Hosp<strong>it</strong>als. As a Radiographer, you may also<br />
have the opportun<strong>it</strong>y <strong>to</strong> travel overseas <strong>in</strong><br />
support of <strong>Defence</strong> Force personnel on combat<br />
deployments <strong>an</strong>d peacekeep<strong>in</strong>g missions.<br />
Or you may form part of a hum<strong>an</strong><strong>it</strong>ari<strong>an</strong><br />
operation or disaster relief program.<br />
Science Officer<br />
(PATHOLOGIST)<br />
As a Science Officer, you’ll be responsible<br />
for aid<strong>in</strong>g medical pract<strong>it</strong>ioners <strong>in</strong> the<br />
diagnosis, mon<strong>it</strong>or<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d prevention of<br />
disease through the <strong>an</strong>alysis of biological<br />
specimens. You’ll also provide a r<strong>an</strong>ge of<br />
pathology services <strong>in</strong> deployed <strong>an</strong>d nondeployed<br />
pathology environments. This<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes the m<strong>an</strong>agement of labora<strong>to</strong>ries <strong>to</strong><br />
conduct rout<strong>in</strong>e biochemical, microbiological,<br />
haema<strong>to</strong>logical <strong>an</strong>d blood tr<strong>an</strong>sfusion<br />
test<strong>in</strong>g of cl<strong>in</strong>ical pathology specimens.<br />
Signals Corps Officer<br />
As a Signals Corps Officer, you’ll play <strong>an</strong><br />
import<strong>an</strong>t role <strong>in</strong> the comm<strong>an</strong>d <strong>an</strong>d control<br />
of the battlespace through the delivery<br />
of a complete <strong>in</strong>formation service dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />
times of peace, conflict <strong>an</strong>d crisis. W<strong>it</strong>h your<br />
unique underst<strong>an</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g of communications<br />
<strong>an</strong>d <strong>in</strong>formation systems, you’ll be equally<br />
at home tr<strong>an</strong>sferr<strong>in</strong>g large volumes of<br />
high-speed data, or work<strong>in</strong>g on computer<br />
sw<strong>it</strong>ched dig<strong>it</strong>al networks provid<strong>in</strong>g highcapac<strong>it</strong>y<br />
secure communications.<br />
Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Corps Officer<br />
W<strong>it</strong>h the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g sophistication of tr<strong>an</strong>sport<br />
logistics, the Royal Australi<strong>an</strong> Corps of<br />
Tr<strong>an</strong>sport (RACT) has a grow<strong>in</strong>g need for<br />
officers <strong>to</strong> m<strong>an</strong>age <strong>it</strong>s fleet of vehicles <strong>an</strong>d<br />
drivers as well as <strong>it</strong>s comput<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d systems<br />
m<strong>an</strong>agement. As a Tr<strong>an</strong>sport Corps Officer,<br />
you’ll be <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> all aspects of the Army’s<br />
tr<strong>an</strong>sport operations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>an</strong>d, sea <strong>an</strong>d<br />
air tr<strong>an</strong>sport, cargo term<strong>in</strong>als, <strong>an</strong>d special<br />
pack<strong>in</strong>g <strong>an</strong>d despatch of supplies for air drops.<br />
