Music Classes CHAMBER MUSIC FOR ADULTS – STRINGS AND PIANO Are you an aspiring adult amateur chamber musician looking for others like yourself to make music with? Perhaps you played seriously when you were younger and are looking to reconnect with music after choosing another career path? Whether you are an advanced musician with chamber music experience or an intermediate player with less experience, this course is designed to match you with others of similar level to learn classical repertoire. This course consists of a weekly one-hour coaching and a private rehearsal. Individuals and pre-formed groups are encouraged to apply. Each group will consist of a minimum of three players (string quartet, piano trio, etc.). Private study at the Preparatory is not a pre-requisite for participation. Prior to placement, students will submit their schedules to the coordinator who will place them in a group, assign a coach, and identify coaching and rehearsal times. Designed for students at Elementary Level 2 and above, the class will concentrate on how to approach reading rhythms, notes, and musical markings, as well as the recognition of patterns. Music for four hands will be used to enforce the fundamentals of sight reading, which are to read continuously in time and to look ahead while playing. Emphasis will be on reviewing theoretical materials, playing games to reinforce concepts and skills, and playing the piano. Minimum of four students. It will give students a chance to learn the first steps of violin playing in a supportive atmosphere, where they can enjoy playing together and observing each other’s progress. Students interested in further study may register for a half-hour private lesson and YPSP Group Class in the fall. Parent participation is required. Class size is limited to four students. Class length will be one hour for four, forty-five minutes for three, or thirty minutes for two students. This is an opportunity to improve the valuable skill of sight reading, as well as to develop the rhythmic and reading skills necessary for orchestral playing. Students should be able to read in the treble clef on all four strings. Required text: Flip-a-rhythm by Sheila Nelson. Minimum of four students, maximum of 10. PP.200.134 01 WED 7:00 – 8:00 L215 Hildreth-Grasso$174 PEABODY TOWSON ANNAPOLIS HOWARD COUNTY Young People’s String Program Ages 5 and up Janet Melnicoff-Brown, YPSP Program Coordinator Bai-Chi Chen, YPSP Cello Coordinator Matthew Boggs, Bass Coordinator The Young People’s String Program (YPSP) is a creative blend of Suzuki philosophy, Paul Rolland’s approach to movement in string playing and traditional string pedagogy. Dr. Shinichi Suzuki’s philosophy embraces the idea that all children are born with musical ability that can be nurtured at an early age through interacting with their environment, listening, imitating, and by working closely with a parent at home. Rolland’s work focuses on relaxation and freedom of movement in string playing, and traditional string pedagogy enhances these approaches by incorporating the development of technique and musicianship through scales, études, music reading, and a variety of repertoire. Our faculty work together to create a solid foundation and an inspiring environment for our young string players. During the summer we do offer Camp Allegro and individual instruction, but do not run YPSP Group Classes. We encourage our students to take individual instruction and participate in Camp Allegro, Peabody Chamber Camp, or other group experiences, as recommended by their teacher. Violin beginners are encouraged to enroll in Introduction to Violin, and cello beginners to enroll in Cello Fun or Introduction to Cello. Individual instruction is also available for new summer students. This class is designed to give the student the opportunity to experience playing in an orchestra. Students will study two to three pieces over the six weeks and then perform at the final class for family members and friends. Students must read music at the Book 1 level. No audition is required. Requires a minimum of six students, including one violist and one cellist. The class will include both individual instruction and group activities and will allow students to pursue their interest in the violin in a supportive, low-stress environment. Students will be grouped by playing level or will have individual classes, if necessary. Class size is limited to four students.
