would be required to take a furlough on May 21 as well, accord<strong>in</strong>g to a letter by Dr. Tomás D. Morales,<br />

president of <strong>the</strong> college, posted on <strong>the</strong> school’s Web site.<br />

All f<strong>in</strong>al exams were to proceed as scheduled, with faculty and staff adm<strong>in</strong>ister<strong>in</strong>g tests expected to be on<br />

campus. Those faculty and staff members would <strong>the</strong>refore be furloughed on a substitute day dur<strong>in</strong>g next<br />

week, Morales noted.<br />

CLARIFYThe Legislature reluctantly approved <strong>the</strong> furloughs Monday night to help keep <strong>the</strong> state solvent. The<br />

budget is more than 40 days overdue and negotiations among legislative leaders on how to contend with a<br />

$9.2 billion deficit have ground to a halt.<br />

Leaders of <strong>the</strong> Civil Service Employees Association, <strong>the</strong> Public Employees Federation, <strong>the</strong> United University<br />

Professions with <strong>the</strong> New York State United Teachers union sought <strong>the</strong> court order. They are su<strong>in</strong>g Paterson<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Legislature, argu<strong>in</strong>g furloughs violate <strong>the</strong> U.S. Constitution’s protection of contracts.<br />

Paterson ordered <strong>the</strong> furloughs of “nonessential” workers and said <strong>the</strong>y would save $30 million a week. The<br />

unions rejected requests for less severe measures, such as postpon<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>ir 4-percent raises to save <strong>the</strong><br />

state money.<br />

Paterson has taken a 10 percent cut <strong>in</strong> pay, or more than $17,000, as he called for shared sacrifice dur<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> fiscal crisis.<br />
