Mo<strong>the</strong>r, daughter graduate today at <strong>CSI</strong><br />

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Mom and daughter, Leslie and Tara<br />

Me<strong>in</strong>ers of Stapleton, will graduate toge<strong>the</strong>r today, with degrees <strong>in</strong><br />

education from <strong>the</strong> College of Staten Island (<strong>CSI</strong>).<br />

Thirty-two years apart <strong>in</strong> age, mo<strong>the</strong>r and daughter were surprised<br />

to realize <strong>the</strong>y were fil<strong>in</strong>g for graduation at <strong>the</strong> same time — Leslie,<br />

with a master’s <strong>in</strong> childhood education, and Tara, with a bachelor’s<br />

degree <strong>in</strong> science, letters and society — <strong>the</strong> suggested major for<br />

students go<strong>in</strong>g on become certified teachers.<br />

Leslie Me<strong>in</strong>ers teaches pre-school at <strong>the</strong> Foresight School <strong>in</strong> New<br />

Spr<strong>in</strong>gville.<br />

She earned her bachelor’s degree while rais<strong>in</strong>g her family, tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

classes part-time between 1983 and 2003, when she completed<br />

her degree <strong>in</strong> early childhood education.<br />

Her daughter took <strong>the</strong> four-year fast track.<br />

“My mom was like my personal advisor because she went through<br />

everyth<strong>in</strong>g I did,” said Tara.<br />

Both say <strong>the</strong>y had a fantastic experience at <strong>CSI</strong>.<br />

While work<strong>in</strong>g on her degree, with m<strong>in</strong>ors <strong>in</strong> French and<br />

psychology, Tara helped found <strong>the</strong> Peace Club on campus, and<br />

swam for four years, earn<strong>in</strong>g 67 medals, sett<strong>in</strong>g seven records and<br />

end<strong>in</strong>g her tenure as capta<strong>in</strong> of <strong>the</strong> team <strong>in</strong> her senior year.<br />

Leslie said she built excellent relationships with professors at <strong>CSI</strong><br />

who were will<strong>in</strong>g to help any student who showed commitment.<br />

She wrote her master’s degree <strong>the</strong>sis on pre-school education, argu<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>the</strong> federal dollars that go to pre<br />

-school programs should fund parents to stay at home with <strong>the</strong>ir children until k<strong>in</strong>dergarten.<br />

The Me<strong>in</strong>ers are thrilled to be graduat<strong>in</strong>g toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

“I’m more excited for my mom than for myself because it’s so deserved, after all this time, rais<strong>in</strong>g a family<br />

and go<strong>in</strong>g to school, and f<strong>in</strong>ally gett<strong>in</strong>g that degree,” said Tara.<br />

F<strong>in</strong>ancially and o<strong>the</strong>rwise, <strong>the</strong> dad <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> family, Curt Me<strong>in</strong>ers, supported his wife and two kids (son Jesse<br />

earned his associate’s degree five years ago) through <strong>the</strong>ir years at <strong>CSI</strong>.<br />

Tara will be leav<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> October to teach English <strong>in</strong> Tours, France.<br />

Follow<strong>in</strong>g commencement, <strong>the</strong> family will celebrate today at <strong>the</strong> Elm Park Inn.<br />
