8 <strong>CSI</strong> students spend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g term <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- When students head to college, <strong>the</strong>y enter a world of opportunity, and eight<br />

students from <strong>the</strong> College of Staten Island are tak<strong>in</strong>g full advantage by spend<strong>in</strong>g four months study<strong>in</strong>g more<br />

than 11,000 miles away from home.<br />

The students are spend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> spr<strong>in</strong>g term study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a. Seven are attend<strong>in</strong>g Nanj<strong>in</strong>g University, while<br />

one student is study<strong>in</strong>g at <strong>the</strong> City University of Hong Kong.<br />

The <strong>CSI</strong> students are liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> modern dormitory facilities while study<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Ken Bach, director of communications at <strong>CSI</strong>: "This semester, students will also enjoy about 10<br />

program-led field trips to historic and cultural sites <strong>in</strong> and around Nanj<strong>in</strong>g."<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> highlights of <strong>the</strong> student excursions is a week-long visit to Beij<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> capital of Ch<strong>in</strong>a , where<br />

<strong>the</strong>y will visit sites such as <strong>the</strong> Forbidden City, <strong>the</strong> ornate Lama Temple, and have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to climb<br />

<strong>the</strong> Great Wall of Ch<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

Any credits <strong>the</strong> students earn while <strong>in</strong> Ch<strong>in</strong>a are recorded on <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>CSI</strong> transcripts, and can be applied to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir course requirements. Students study<strong>in</strong>g at Nanj<strong>in</strong>g University can also earn credit toward a certificate<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>CSI</strong>'s Modern Ch<strong>in</strong>a Studies certificate program.<br />

"The purpose of offer<strong>in</strong>g this study abroad program is to provide students <strong>the</strong> opportunity to explore <strong>the</strong><br />

world," Bach said. In addition, <strong>the</strong> program helps students "to better understand an important world culture<br />

and language, and to <strong>in</strong>tegrate an <strong>in</strong>ternational dimension to <strong>the</strong>ir th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and studies," he cont<strong>in</strong>ued.<br />

The study abroad program is paid for by <strong>the</strong> students <strong>the</strong>mselves, though <strong>the</strong>re are aid and scholarship<br />

opportunities.<br />
