CHSAA baseball roundup: Farrell falls to Step<strong>in</strong>ac<br />

Monsignor Farrell’s hopes of repeat<strong>in</strong>g as CHSAA Staten Island champions took a major hit on Thursday when <strong>the</strong> Lions<br />
gave up four runs <strong>in</strong> each of <strong>the</strong> fourth and fifth <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs en route to a 9-3 loss to Archbishop Step<strong>in</strong>ac <strong>in</strong> White Pla<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
Farrell (8-3) is now two games beh<strong>in</strong>d St. Joseph by <strong>the</strong> Sea, which crushed Salesian, 15-4, on Thursday with three<br />
games rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. The two rivals clash Monday at <strong>the</strong> College of Staten Island, but Sea won both of <strong>the</strong> first two meet<strong>in</strong>gs<br />
and owns <strong>the</strong> head-to-head tiebreaker.<br />
Farrell ace Joe Fiori, who last pitched <strong>in</strong> a one-hitter aga<strong>in</strong>st Moore Catholic on April 29, struggled with his command. The<br />
senior gave up four earned runs on six hits, with two strikeouts and three walks <strong>in</strong> four <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />
Led by Carl Triano and Mike Annunizata, who drove <strong>in</strong> two RBIs apiece, Step<strong>in</strong>ac (11-4) broke <strong>the</strong> game open with a fourrun<br />
fourth <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> Crusaders tacked on four more runs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> fifth to take a command<strong>in</strong>g 8-1 lead.<br />
Mike DiPaola was 3-for-3 with a run scored and Kev<strong>in</strong> Kelly had two RBIs for Farrell, which faces Iona Prep Friday<br />
afternoon.<br />
St. Joseph by <strong>the</strong> Sea 15, Salesian 4: Nick Pavia had a two-run s<strong>in</strong>gle <strong>in</strong> a four-run second <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and St. Joseph by <strong>the</strong><br />
Sea didn’t look back <strong>in</strong> a rout at Salesian Thursday. V<strong>in</strong> Garcia had a two-run double, Rob Silvestri belted a three-run<br />
home run and Chris Ramanuskas belted an RBI double to pace <strong>the</strong> Vik<strong>in</strong>gs attack, while Frank Stavola flirted with a nohitter<br />
for a second consecutive start.<br />
Last week, he didn’t allow his first hit until <strong>the</strong> seventh <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and on Thursday he took <strong>the</strong> no-no <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> sixth <strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g. He<br />
ended up giv<strong>in</strong>g up four earned runs on five hits, strik<strong>in</strong>g out three with four walks for first-place Sea (11-1), while Salesian<br />
fell to 2-13.<br />
