Steel base material
Compressive stress in the steel
Compressive stress in the base steel has no influence on pullout strength of the fastener.
This was demonstrated by placing fasteners in unstressed 15 mm [0.59"] thick steel plates
having a yield strength of 259.3 MPa [37.6 ksi] and extracting them while the plates were
compressed in a testing machine.
The minimal variation in pullout load is simply random variation experienced in testing.
5.3 Suitability of the steel for fastening
There are three main factors determining the suitability of a construction grade steel member
for DX fastening:
• Steel thickness
• Ultimate tensile strength
• Flexibility of the base steel member
