Our Family in Faith As I Have Loved You by Ernie Basile At this writing, our nation is still reeling from the bombing at Boston's marathon. More violence. Yet also more acts of courage, compassion, and love on the part of medical providers, first responders, and innocent bystanders. We are still hearing reports of real heroes acting instinctively to help, in spite of danger. Some of these heroes seem to be ordinary people like you and me. They never thought of themselves as heroic, but were simply reacting to the plight of fellow human beings. Somewhat like Anne Smedinghoff, the young woman who was trying to make a difference but was killed in Afghanistan and laid to rest in River Forest recently. Or Father Emil Kapaun, Korean War chaplain awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for heroism in battle. Today's gospel reading reminds us that we have received a new commandment from Christ - to love one another as He has loved us. This is so important that He says it will be precisely how people will know we are His followers - by our love. And for most of us, that love will probably not be in a moment of disaster or crisis as much as in our day-by-day fidelity and compassion. And through this daily fidelity and compassion, perhaps we will be poised even to be heroic if the challenge should come. Some Catholic theologians believe that the human race is undergoing a spiritual evolution. More and more people of all faiths, they say, are committed to daily prayer and meditation, silence and listening to the Holy Spirit. Throughout the world, more and more people are spending time in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Through all of this, an awareness is developing, a consciousness that we are all interrelated. So as the world around us seems to be spinning out of control through violence and hatred, at the same time something new and hopeful is being born, and we are part of it. As we look to our sisters and brothers in Boston and other places where violence has occurred, we see very few hearts filled with hate and violence, and so many hearts filled with hope, resolve, and generosity. "Someday, after mastering the winds, the waves, the tides and gravity, we shall harness for God the energies of love, and then, for a second time in the history of the world, humans will have discovered fire." -Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. 4th Annual Parish Mission Garage Sale Drop Off Donations any Weekend in May We accept gently-used clothing, sports equipment, household items, appliances, tools, etc. Your Garage Sale contributions and your help are appreciated. Collections are scheduled for all four weekends in May on Saturdays from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Sundays from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Look for volunteers and a semi-trailer in the far south end of the Parish School parking lot to receive your donations. Receipts for tax purposes will be provided. The 2013 St. Mary Immaculate Mission Garage Sale will be held in the Parish Gym on Thursday and Friday June 13 & 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday, June 15 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Sunday, June 16 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need volunteers to help with the collection, set-up, and sales. Our Family in Faith St. Mary Immaculate Parish now offers Online Giving! Convenient. Easy. Secure. Simply go to our parish website, www.smip.org, and click the “Online Giving” logo as shown here. With our new Online Giving website, your donations can be made automatically from your checking, savings, or credit card account(s) into the parish bank account. This new program offers significant improvements and greater flexibility over our previous ACH/Credit Card program. You can choose your donation dates, types and frequencies, as well as enter multiple payment methods. When you access the online giving website the first time, you will need to create a personal account. At the SMI Online Giving home page, you can use the “Create New Account” option on top, or the “Sign up for a New Account” option on the right side. There is a “Watch Help Video” link which shows a brief tutorial on creating a new account, as well as a FAQs link and other useful information. After you create your User ID and Password, and enter your basic contact info, you will receive a confirmation email with another link you’ll need to click to confirm your account. Once confirmed, you can enter your payment methods and make new gifts, either one-time or recurring, to our weekly, monthly, and special collections throughout the year. You can also manage your active giving and view your giving history. Again there are Help Videos available for each of these options. If you are using our original ACH/Credit Card program through the Authorization Form in the bulletin, and you start giving in Online Giving, please call the Parish Office to discontinue your donations in the original system. Failure to do so could result in duplicate donations being processed. Please contact the Parish Office at 815-436-2651 if you have any questions. Are you Connected? There is a new young adult ministry group here at St. Mary Immaculate called Spirit and Truth! The group gatherings will include a speaker, Eucharistic Adoration, worship music, food and fellowship! The group will meet every Friday night from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. ALL young adults between the ages of 18 and 39 are welcome. It is a great opportunity to meet new people and grow in faith!
