Wander through the isolated private woods of Grève de<br />

Lecq and up to the winding green lanes of St Mary, past<br />

granite farms and cod houses, to the wind swept cliffs of<br />

the north coast. Spectacular views of the other islands and<br />

occasionally the French coast await as you return past the<br />

old militia shooting grounds and the ancient hill fort back<br />

to the bay, where you may wish to have a well deserved<br />

leisurely lunch, afternoon tea or just an ice cream.<br />

farming heritage and some beautiful granite farmhouses.<br />

Afterwards, why not reward yourself with a welcome<br />

drink in the British Union Inn opposite the parish church.<br />

West Coast Wander<br />

Enjoy the natural backdrop of the wonderful west<br />

coast, from the beach with its historic fortifications, the<br />

dune grasslands and the dense reed-bed surrounding<br />

the pond, habitat for a variety of species throughout<br />

the year. Discover wild orchids in May within the<br />

National Trust’s Nature Reserve and you may even see<br />

the marsh harriers which nest here. There is a host<br />

of birds, insects – butterflies, dragonflies and other<br />

creepy-crawlies to see on this walk so don’t forget your<br />

binoculars!<br />

Gardens and Micro Climate of Rozel<br />

This is the area where famous local artist Edmund<br />

Blampied grew up. Start in Samuel Curtis’s forgotten,<br />

Victorian, sub-tropical garden where crumbling walls<br />

and steps with weed-covered terraces tell the story of<br />

a garden lost in time for almost 100 years. Visits include<br />

the stunning and colourful gardens of ‘Les Vaux’ with its<br />

own nature reserve, peacocks and red squirrels and Rozel<br />

Manor with its varied garden of palms, wild areas, a lake<br />

and a private chapel.<br />

peaceful Royal Square where the last battle in the British<br />

Isles took place, Victorian markets and fine town hall.<br />

Conditions permitting, the tour takes in a gentle climb to<br />

admire the views from Mount Bingham, overlooking the<br />

town, its many harbours and St Aubin’s Bay.<br />

Period to the present day, Gorey has many tales to tell,<br />

from the oyster fishing boom to treachery in the castle.<br />

Hear about Harry Vardon and the man who captured the<br />

Rosetta Stone and George Eliot, all residents of Grouville<br />

at some time. Head back through village lanes and follow<br />

the route of the Jersey Eastern Railway back to the Pier.<br />

Why not enjoy a well deserved drink in one of Gorey’s<br />

many cafés or bars.<br />

the Island. Listen to sea-faring tales while you discover<br />

vantage points created by the WWII Occupation force<br />

and the flora and fauna of Portelet Common. This is a<br />

romantic coastline of colour throughout all four seasons.<br />

Refreshments are available at the Smugglers Inn at<br />

Ouaisne Bay before returning to Portelet.<br />

From Occupation<br />

to Vegetation Walk<br />

Journey through the remains of personnel shelters,<br />

bunkers and crawl trenches from the Occupation that<br />

are now nearly all but hidden under a variety of trees,<br />

shrubs and wild flowers, which has created a refuge for a<br />

diversity of wildlife from red squirrels to bats.<br />

The Around Island Express<br />

If you like a challenge, why not come along? Choose a<br />

day or do all three! Following on from the success of<br />

Jersey Tourism’s 5 day Around Island Walk, Blue Badge<br />

Guide Arthur Lamy brings you the same route at a<br />

brisker pace.<br />

Day 1 takes you from St Helier to Bonne Nuit via the<br />

east coast, passing Mont Orgueil and St Catherine’s<br />

breakwater and heading along the north coast past<br />

Rozel to Bonne Nuit. Day 2 heads from Bonne Nuit to La<br />

Corbière along the cliff paths passing Devil’s Hole, Grève<br />

de Lecq and Grosnez and Day 3 leaves La Corbière<br />

behind, crossing St Brelade’s Bay, Portelet Common and<br />

heading through St Aubin, before finishing back in St<br />

Helier. Bring a packed lunch and refreshments.<br />
