(see upper photo, page 43) by G. R. Shi A Summary Report We are pleased to provide this summary report <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian C<strong>on</strong>ference particularly in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> those who were unable to attend. The Permian C<strong>on</strong>ference was dedicated to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 200 th Anniversary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> birth <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki (1797-1873), an explorer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Americas, Hawaii and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> British Col<strong>on</strong>ies <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land (now New SouthWales, Victoria and Tasmania <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Australia). During <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> course <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> his extensive SE Australian explorati<strong>on</strong>s, Strzelecki studied <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian sequences <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Sydney and Tasmania Basins and collected <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first comprehensive suites <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> fossils from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se basins. Attendance at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian C<strong>on</strong>ference was particularly pleasing, with some 64 paid registrants representing 16 countries. A total <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 82 abstracts were received, 48 <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> which were presented as posters. The spread <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> papers received is also <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> interest; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y covered 7 major <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>mes with “Biostratigraphy” dominating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>ference. MEETING REPORTS 44 Two excursi<strong>on</strong>s were organized: <strong>on</strong>e (mid-c<strong>on</strong>ference excursi<strong>on</strong>) to Bacchus Marsh area, about 50 km NW <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Melbourne; <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r (post-c<strong>on</strong>ference excursi<strong>on</strong>) to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sou<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Sydney Basin some 750 km NE <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Melbourne. The post-c<strong>on</strong>ference excursi<strong>on</strong> was c<strong>on</strong>ducted in a manner simular to a field geology c<strong>on</strong>ference; it involved active group discussi<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field following individual’s observati<strong>on</strong>s. Of course, running kangaroos and sleepy koalas have not escaped participants’ eyes ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r. In c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>, we would like to thank all <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> participants for your active participati<strong>on</strong> in and c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>ference. We trust that you all have had an enjoyable and fruitful trip to Australia.
