Clarkina (c<strong>on</strong>od<strong>on</strong>t) Z<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Upper Permian<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> China.<br />

Species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Clarkina show remarkable diversificati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Permian <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> South China. Detailed tax<strong>on</strong>omic examinati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

faunas shows two general lineages developed in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> early<br />

Wuchiapingian. One, typified by C. leveni, retains a large cusp,<br />

and includes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> postbitteri, dukouensis,<br />

asymmetrica, leveni, guangyuanensis, transcaucasica,<br />

orientalis, and l<strong>on</strong>gicuspidata. The o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, typified by C.<br />

liangshanensis, shows a progressive reducti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cusp and<br />

posterior denticles, and includes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species daxianensis,<br />

liangshanensis, inflecta, and demicornis. These successi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> species provide a refined z<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wuchiapingian.<br />

This z<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> was first proposed by Mei et al., 1994. The present<br />

z<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> (Table 1) is essentially that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Mei, <strong>on</strong>ly modifying <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

orientalis z<strong>on</strong>e by combining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir orientalis and inflecta z<strong>on</strong>es.<br />

The C. inflecta z<strong>on</strong>e is recognized as a subs<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orientalis<br />

z<strong>on</strong>e. Though we have C. inflecta from South China and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Transcaucasicus, it appears to be a rare species that is usefull<br />

to characterized <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> upper part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orientalis z<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong> a regi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

basis. Clarkina demicornis and C. l<strong>on</strong>gicuspidata also<br />

appear in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> upper part <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> orientalis z<strong>on</strong>e apparently coincident<br />

with C. inflecta. Of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wuchiapingian forms, C.<br />

l<strong>on</strong>gicuspidata is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e we have recovered from bed 2 or<br />

above in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meishan secti<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> proposed stratotype for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Changhsingian.<br />

The Changxing Limest<strong>on</strong>e in its type area (Meishan) shows<br />

a single successi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Clarkina species that can be characterized<br />

by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> denticulati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Pa element. The first species<br />

appearing at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> very base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> bed 2 in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Meishan secti<strong>on</strong> is C.<br />

wangi which has a high fused wall-like carina. C. wangi is<br />

followed by C. subcarinata (sensu strictu) which shows partially<br />

fused denticles <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> posterior end <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carina and a<br />

relatively high discrete cusp, which is, in turn, followed by C.<br />

changxingensis which shows a marked reducti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carinal<br />

height just anterior <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> posterior cusp, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> development <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a<br />

subtle depressi<strong>on</strong> or sulcus, and discrete, though small posterior<br />

denticles <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> carina. C. yini (proposed by Mei et al.<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>1998</str<strong>on</strong>g>, as C. changxingensis yini) follows and is characterized<br />

by a high erect cusp and discrete posterior denticles. Finally,<br />

just above <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> top <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Changxing Limest<strong>on</strong>e appears C.<br />

meishanensis, which shows a large proclined cusp and partially<br />

fused posterior denticles. This species overlaps <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last<br />

appearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hindeodus latidentatus, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transiti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

morphotype from H. latidentatus to H. parvus and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first<br />

appearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Hindeodus parvus. Each successive species in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Changhsingian Clarkina overlaps with its predecessor for<br />

short intervals. This detailed analysis provides significant refinement<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> z<strong>on</strong>ati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Changhsingian.<br />

A problem exists in that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first appearance <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> C. wangi is<br />

at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> minor unc<strong>on</strong>formity between bed 1 (a c<strong>on</strong>glomerate loaded<br />

with Clarkina orientalis) and bed 2. Since Clarkina<br />

l<strong>on</strong>gicuspidata ranges into bed 2, we have no doubt that it is<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> probable predecessor to C. wangi. However, in each successive<br />

appearance (and also in all those in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Wuchiapingian)<br />

we have transiti<strong>on</strong>al morphotypes in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> interval <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> overlap<br />

that is missing for C. wangi suggesting a hiatus between bed 1<br />

and bed 2 and making <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> lithologic unit <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
