Proposal <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Aidaralash as Global Stratotype Secti<strong>on</strong> and<br />

Point (GSSP) for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> base <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian System, Episodes,<br />

submitted Nov. 3, 1997.<br />

Supported successful field trips:<br />

1. To better document and fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r collect potential<br />

stratotypes for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Cisuralian stages.<br />

2. To find a c<strong>on</strong>tinuous carb<strong>on</strong>ate successi<strong>on</strong> for a reference<br />

secti<strong>on</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> uppermost Carb<strong>on</strong>iferous and Lower Permian<br />

in Nevada. A team <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> American, Chinese, Canadian, and<br />

Russian scientists found and measured two secti<strong>on</strong>s from<br />

upper Kasimovian through Kungurian within 20 km <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> each<br />

o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r replete with c<strong>on</strong>od<strong>on</strong>ts and fusulinids.<br />

3. To do <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> necessary microsampling <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> boundary intervals<br />

to solidly establish <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Lopingian and c<strong>on</strong>stituent stages in<br />

China.<br />

Developed accurate apparatal evoluti<strong>on</strong> plan for Hindeodus<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Late Permian to aid <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Working Group <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

Permian-Triassic boundary <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Subcommissi<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong><br />

Triassic in a solid evoluti<strong>on</strong>ary lineage.<br />

Established <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Special Project “The Permian: From Glaciati<strong>on</strong><br />

to Global Warming to Mass Extincti<strong>on</strong>” to use detailed<br />

biostratigraphy and numerical age dates to create an initial<br />

framework for correlating and evaluating global events <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian. This special project will help in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> development<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Permian GSSP’s by providing important<br />

stratigraphic, biostratigraphic and numerical age dates to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> specific subcommissi<strong>on</strong> working groups.<br />
