Opening ceremony - 28 July at 2.00 p.m. in <strong>the</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Culture
Centre “Kazan”.
Oral presentations and posters will be presented from 29 July to
3 August aboard <strong>the</strong> special ship; <strong>the</strong> field excursions will take
place during <strong>the</strong> same dates. This scientific trip is planned to
examine <strong>the</strong> main sections <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ufimian, Kazanian and Tatarian
stages in basins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Volga, Kama, Sheshma, and Sok rivers.

Wea<strong>the</strong>r
The Kazanian region in late July and early August enjoys a warm
and sunny summer: temperatures usually range between +18 and
+27. However, rain and cool conditions can also occur.
Travel to Kazan
For foreign participants, <strong>the</strong> most convenient way is by direct
flight from Frankfurt (Lufthansa) on Mondays and Thursdays,
and return flight on Tuesdays and Fridays. Also it is possible to
travel to Kazan through Moscow by plane (domestic airline) or by
train. There will be a special vehicle to meet participants at <strong>the</strong>
Kazanian airport and railway station. It will transport participants
to <strong>the</strong> site <strong>of</strong> registration and accommodation. Please inform <strong>the</strong>
Organizing Committee about details <strong>of</strong> your flight or train before
25 July. If you wish to arrive earlier than 27 July or if you wish to
depart after 4 August, please inform <strong>the</strong> Organizing Committee
before 1 July to provide your accommodation hotel.
Registration
Accommodations for participants are planned in first and second
class cabins aboard a special ship. Registration fee for <strong>the</strong> Symposium
will be $100, and $50 for students, post-graduates and
accompanying members (dollars USA). Accommodation (ship
cabins and meals) will be $40 or $60 per day. Payment can be made
during registration, after arriving to Kazan, or through <strong>the</strong> banks:

Permian <strong>of</strong> Eastern Tehys: Biostratigraphy,
Palaeogeography and Resources, Recently Held at

A Summary Report
We are pleased to provide this summary report on <strong>the</strong>
Permian Conference particularly in <strong>the</strong> interest <strong>of</strong> those who
were unable to attend.
The Permian Conference was dedicated to <strong>the</strong> 200 th Anniversary
<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> Sir Paul Edmund Strzelecki (1797-1873), an
explorer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Americas, Hawaii and <strong>the</strong> British Colonies <strong>of</strong>
New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land (now New
SouthWales, Victoria and Tasmania <strong>of</strong> Australia). During <strong>the</strong>
course <strong>of</strong> his extensive SE Australian explorations, Strzelecki
studied <strong>the</strong> Permian sequences <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Sydney and Tasmania
Basins and collected <strong>the</strong> first comprehensive suites <strong>of</strong> fossils
from <strong>the</strong>se basins.
Attendance at <strong>the</strong> Permian Conference was particularly
pleasing, with some 64 paid registrants representing 16
countries. A total <strong>of</strong> 82 abstracts were received, 48 <strong>of</strong> which
were presented as posters. The spread <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers received
is also <strong>of</strong> interest; <strong>the</strong>y covered 7 major <strong>the</strong>mes with “Biostratigraphy”
dominating <strong>the</strong> conference.

Two excursions were organized: one (mid-conference
excursion) to Bacchus Marsh area, about 50 km NW <strong>of</strong>
Melbourne; <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r (post-conference excursion) to <strong>the</strong>
sou<strong>the</strong>rn Sydney Basin some 750 km NE <strong>of</strong> Melbourne. The
post-conference excursion was conducted in a manner simular
to a field geology conference; it involved active group discussions
in <strong>the</strong> field following individual’s observations. Of
course, running kangaroos and sleepy koalas have not escaped
participants’ eyes ei<strong>the</strong>r.
In conclusion, we would like to thank all <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> participants
for your active participation in and contribution to <strong>the</strong> conference.
We trust that you all have had an enjoyable and fruitful
trip to Australia.
