LAND USE
According to the Spatial Development Framework of uMkhanyakude land cover in
uMkhanyakude district is fifty percent bushland and thicket and eleven percent
primary grassland. Fourteen percent of land is allocated for conservation. Thirty one
percent of land is owned by Ingonyama Trust board, followed by nine percent of land
owned by state and eight percent by companies. Three percent of the district land is
privately owned.
The Land use in the area is given by Figure 2 below. It can be seen that most of the
land is Vacant or unspecified which limits the analysis of land use. A significant
portion of the land is used for conservation or forestry. Residential land is spread
unevenly across the district, mostly around Manguzi, Jozini, Hluhluwe, Hlabisa and
Mtubatuba. Subsistence farming can be seen to occur in the Mkuze, Ubombo,
Mtubatuba and Hluhluwe areas. Only a small piece of land used for mining is
noticeable on the southern district border in Mtubatuba. Commercial and industrial
land and cultivated land is not visible.
