UDM ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT FRAMEWORK Figure 3: Map of gazetted and settled land claims Table 1 and 2 provided by the KwaZulu-Natal Land Claims Commission shows the UDM land claims that are settled and unsettled respectively for UDM. There are ten settled land claims in Hlabisa and Jozini, four in Big 5 False Bay and two in Hlabisa. The total area of UDM is 1 281 800 hectares and the number of land claims settled are 184 044 hectares which amounts to 14 percent of UDM land. Traditional Authorities play an important social and economic role in the uMkhanyakude DM area. In each local municipality there is a traditional body that communicates with the local ward committees and council forming part of the decision making body in the area. As land owners, Traditional Authorities directly shape the economic conditions of the area. Without consultation and permission of Traditional Authorities there can be no development of UDM. There are 296 Traditional Councils in KwaZulu-Natal Province of which eighteen Traditional Authorities lay in the uMkhanyakude District Municipal area.
