Mtubatuba has the lowest unemployment rate, as well as the second largest number
of highly skilled workers employed. This is aligned to the fact that it is houses the
largest town in the area and demands higher skilled activity.
INCOME
The monthly income per person (age 15-65) reflects the poverty in uMkhanyakude
DM.
Table 17 is taken from Community Survey 2007 data. It shows the monthly income
bracket for 336 198 persons. Of this number, 220 848 (66 percent) earn no monthly
income. 10 percent or 33 667 people earn between R 801 – R1600 per month. This
is followed by 24 396 people earning R401 – R800 a month.

From the table above it is evident that there is a gender skew in income earned.
There are 33 000 more females than men who earn no income in UDM. More
women than men earn between the income bracket R1 – R1 600, but beyond this
bracket, the number of men who earn are higher. Thus women earn less in UDM
than men do.
The IDP (2011/12) presents data of annual household income from Community
Survey 2007 data. 69 percent of households earned below R 9 600. This is
worsened by the fact that approximately 42 percent of household have 4 -7
