Manley's, Inc., Kansas City. Mo., and Mrs.
McKenna, is a graduate of Kansas City's
Rockhurst High School and attended Marquette
University, Milwaukee. Wis., and the
University of Tulsa.
Also at the final Youth Film Forum
session, members viewed "The Andromeda
Strain." then were led in discussion of the
film by Prof. Bill Hays of Tulsa University.
I he forum is composed of representatives
from 20 Tulsa high schools, Tulsa University,
Oral Roberts University and Tulsa
Junior College who meet once a month
during the school term to view a new film
and discuss it under Hays' leadership.
OKLAHOMA CITY
There are other Video Independent construction
or remodeling projects in the
works in addition to those we reported last
week in the Southwest section. In Enid, a
new twin auditorium theatre on the west
side of town is the project occupying the
attention of Video president Kenneth C.
Blackledge and Video city manager J. Paul
Shipley. Bids were to be let this month, after
the land acquisition was firmed and the
architectural
plans were completed.
A twin indoor theatre also is in the works
for the circuit in Las Cruces, N.M., with the
twin to be constructed on the corner of the
Fiesta Twin Drive-In. To make room on the
drive-in property for the indoor duo. Video
has put a new. all-steel screen tower (without
interruption of regular programs) for the
drive-in customers. Work in Las Cruces is
proceeding under district supervisor Paul E.
Cornwell and city manager Ollie Wilhelm.
Gary Schvenchonis Hurt
In SA Drive-in Holdup
SAN ANTONIO—Two bandits, one of
them armed with a revolver, robbed the
Towne Twin Drive-in Saturday (22) night,
struck a teenage attendant on the head and
made off with $150 in cash.
John Menchaca, an off-duty patrolman,
who was working in the theatre's concession
stand, told police that at about 10:15 p.m.
someone told him the ticket booth had been
robbed.
He went to the booth and found Gary
Schvenchonis lying on the ground. Menchaca
said he was informed that two men, ages
20 to 25 years old. had told the attendant
they wanted some money. One of the rob-

Theatre at HemisFair Plaza, said the
theatre will be closed during June while

Ft. Sam Houston Theatre
To Cost About $386,333
SAN ANTONIO—A 500 seat. $386,333
theatre complete with lobby, stage and dressing
rooms will be constructed at Ft. Sam
Houston, local army base.
The second such structure planned for the
reservation, the proposed theatre is to be
financed by profits of the Army and Air
Force Motion Picture Service.
The theatre plans were announced by
C. R. lkerman. chief of the construction
contracts inspection section at the military
complex.
Plans for the theatre include landscaped
grounds and a paved parking area. The
completion date on the project is February
1972.
Fort Sam's present theatre, with 1.207
seating capacity, was built in 1935.
William Wyler Is Recipient
Of Special Cannes Award

special gold medal at the Cannes Film Festival
as the famed international event got
under way here. Wyler was among a distinguished
group of filmmakers honored as
former Golden Palm Award winners.
Wyler has been the recipient of three
Golden Palms over the years— "Detective
Story" in 1951. "Friendly Persuasion" in
1957, and "The Collector" in 1965.

Films, Projectors Seized
At SA Queen Arts Theatre
SAN"ANTONIO— Members of the San
Antonio police vice squad hit the Queen
Twin Arts Theatre Friday (21) afternoon
and confiscated two 16mm projectors, three
rolls of 16mm films, one eight-track tape
player, a 16mm film splicer and several
other items.
The feature film 'The Mad Pieman" and
two reels of short subjects were the films
confiscated.
An advisory hearing was held about 6
p.m. Friday before justice of the peace Mike
Hernandez jr., who ruled the films were
obscene and ordered them and the equipment
held for further prosecution in a
county court-at-law.
Those arrested at the theatre were Mike
Lucio and Pedro Saenz Mclende/. both
charged with the possession and exhibition
of obscene material. Each was placed in jail
in lieu of $5,000 bond.
Detectives spent pari of a daj viewing the
film prior to obtaining the warrants. Names
and addresses of all patrons in the theatre
were recorded by arresting officers for use
at a later date as witnesses.

advertising publicity department.
