CULTIVARS OF MAIN LONGAN CENTRES IN ASIA<br />
Ch<strong>in</strong>a<br />
The popular longan cultivars are:<br />
Guangxi prov<strong>in</strong>ce : ‘Dawuyuan’<br />
‘Guangyan’<br />
Guangdong prov<strong>in</strong>ce :<br />
‘Chuliang’<br />
‘Shixia’<br />
‘Wuyuan’<br />
Fujian prov<strong>in</strong>ce : ‘Fuyan’<br />

‘Honghezi’<br />
The characteristics of the more popular longan cultivars are as follows:<br />
‘Chuliang’<br />
‘Chuliang’ is a native and superior quality longan cultivar <strong>in</strong> Gaozhou area with<strong>in</strong><br />
the Guangdong Prov<strong>in</strong>ce. It is characterized by:<br />
• large fruit size (average fruit weight of 12.0 - 16.5g),<br />
• thick and firm aril,<br />
• high aril recovery rate (edible part of 69 - 74 percent),<br />
• sweet with Total Soluble Solids (TSS) of 20 - 23 percent, and<br />
• fragrant flavour.<br />
The dry fruit rate ranges from 35-38 percent and the dry flesh rate from 13-16<br />
percent. The colour of processed dried flesh is golden yellow. The cultivar produces high<br />
and stable yield. Its clones show the features of early bear<strong>in</strong>g, high and stable yield<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
and hereditary stability. Presently the cultivar covers a total area of over 100,000 ha <strong>in</strong> the<br />
country. About 30,000 ha were planted <strong>in</strong> Gaozhou where 12,000 ha are <strong>in</strong> <strong>production</strong><br />
with an output of more than 60,000 metric tons (Huang et al., 2000).<br />
The cultivar was awarded the Gold Prize at the First Ch<strong>in</strong>a Agricultural Exposition<br />
<strong>in</strong> 1992 and won the title of “Famous Brand Produce” at the Third Ch<strong>in</strong>a Agricultural<br />
Exposition <strong>in</strong> 1997 and also at the Ch<strong>in</strong>a International Agricultural Exposition <strong>in</strong> 1999<br />
(Liu et al., 2000).<br />
