Adequate energy availability for weight maintenance
Energy availability
~ 45 kcal
(~ 189 kJ)
per kg fat free mass (FFM)
Example
Athlete: 65 kg and 15% body fat
FFM = 85% x 65 kg = 55 kg
Weekly training = 5600 kcal (23.5 MJ)
Daily energy intake = 3285 kcal (13.8 MJ)
Energy availability = (3285-800)/55
= 45 kcal/kg FFM (189 kJ)
Assessing energy availability of some
Paralympic athletes is relatively straightforward,
but for others this can be a difficult process
due to:
Lack of data regarding the energy demands
of some activities, making weekly training
energy expenditure difficult to estimate.
Difficulties in assessing lean body mass since
there are no validated methods of body
composition assessment (e.g., spinal cord
injuries).
Factoring in the impact of other contributors
to energy expenditure which occur in
day-to-day life (such as muscle spasm,
uneven gait in ambulation).
An experienced sports nutrition practitioner
can help the athlete to estimate their energy
requirements, but the process may require
some “trial and error” using the individual
athlete’s response to changes as a guide.
