November 3, over 300 riders
The Thanksgiving holiday is over and we’re
back to work. Hopefully everyone had a
great time getting together
with friends and family.
Now we’re in full swing
of the holiday season.
Admittedly, I’m not a fan
of the hysteria that goes
along with this time of
year. Maybe I’ve handled
too many holiday theft
or fraud calls or holiday
domestic disputes?
One of the traditions I
am fond of is additional
opportunities to spend
time with friends and family. As we
engage in holiday revelry, we are exposed
to decadent food, treats, and plenty of
alcoholic beverages. Of course, all are fine
in moderation; however I have admittedly
overindulged in all three. At the risk of
sounding like your mother, I’ll make my
plea anyway.
Have fun during the season; however, if you
have too much to drink, have a plan. Stay at
a nearby hotel, designate a sober driver, call
a cab, a friend, or even a DSA director. We
want you to have a great holiday season, but
nothing will ruin that faster than hurting
yourself, someone else, or landing in jail
for a DUI arrest. I know, we’re all adults
and we’re responsible law enforcement
types too, but we have already had one
member end up on the wrong side of a jail
cell for DUI this season. Enjoy, but do so
responsibly.
The end of the year also signals annual
DSA director elections, giving you the
opportunity to shape the direction of your
board. Though it’s hard to believe, it has
already been three years and I am up for
re-election. I will spare you my re-election
discourse for now, since you can read that
when you receive the election materials
later this month.
The past three years have been busy and
enlightening. For the last year I’ve had the
distinct pleasure of serving as your DSA
president and it has been my honor to serve
as the leader of our association. With the
expiration of my term, my
presidential term is also
coming to an end.
After much consideration,
I have decided to run for
re-election to the board;
however, I will not pursue
another term as president.
So, with the New Year, I
will also have a new work
assignment. Where will
I land? Wherever that
may be, I look forward to
getting back into mix of
day-to-day department operations.
A couple of weeks ago, Director Dustin
Lopez and I attended the conference of the
State Association of County Retirement
Systems. Though we had hoped for the
clouds to clear and have some great
revelation, we simply learned, they too
have a lot of unanswered questions about
the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act
of 2013. One of the most commonly asked
questions I’ve had to deal with recently is the
conversion of unused or accumulated sick
time to service credit. Though not entirely
clear, it does NOT appear this benefit will
be jeopardized by this legislation.
While at the conference, Det. Ali Perez
was released from the hospital and is now
recovering at home. I have also delivered
the proceeds from the DSA’s fundraising
efforts. The many fundraising events were
a great success, and the proceeds will allow
his family to be by his side during his long
recovery, ensuring their financial stability
throughout. On behalf of all involved, I
thank you for graciousness in giving your
time, money, and moral support.
As previously mentioned, this is most
likely my last month as your DSA
president. With that, this is my last
president’s report. I look forward to
working with many of you in the field in
the near future. Until then, stay busy, be
safe, be healthy, and be well!
A Christmas Poem
by Retired Corporal Terry Perley
T’was
the night
before
Christmas and all through the station it
was busy, it was busy cause crime never
takes a vacation.
The Hi-Tecs were hung on each
locker with care in hopes that the
sergeant would give them a spare.
When 10-8 in National City and
parts there around a sighting was made
of a sheriff’s patrol car abound.
Two elf like deputies delivering
to those in need, food, for their hearts
were full of the giving mood.
It was Christmas all right and
crime was a rampant but these two
jolly elves were doing their part to feed
those who haven’t.
When up on their car top arose
such a clatter the deputies stopped to
see what was the matter.
And what to their wondering
eyes should appear but two cups full of
coffee and a war bag with gear.
Who left these presents no one
really knows but the LT was standing
there pointing his nose at a jolly old elf
flying by in the sky.
You know his name, the man
with the sleigh and a bag full of toys for
good girls and boys.
The deputies looked up and saw
a sight to extol, it was Santa and his
reindeer going out on patrol.
The jolly old elf was dressed all in
blue with a nightstick, a flashlight, and
a badge too.
Yes, Santa was ready to fight
crime on this night, even his Smoky the
Bear hat was on right.
Now Santa was heard to
transmit, as he rode out of sight:
“Spend time with your families I’ll keep
the peace on this night.”
“I’m 10-8 I. O. and a Ho, Ho,
Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas to all and to
all a safe night.”
4 Silver Star December 2012
I believe it was a Rudyard Kipling poem in
which a father tells his son that one sign
of being a man is, “If you can keep your
head when all about you are losing theirs…”
These words come to mind when I look
back on 2012 and the impressive role that
San Diego County Sheriff’s Department
played in shaping events.
We know this was an exceptionally eventful
year for those of us in public service
and in law enforcement in particular. It
was the first full year for implementing
Public Safety Realignment (AB 109) with
its massive shift in responsibility to the
sheriff’s department and county probation
department. This has required us to re-tool
and accelerate our recruitment of deputy
sheriffs. It’s prompted us to rethink how we
staff our Detentions Services Bureau and
how we bring Law Enforcement deputies
into the department.
Also, this year policymakers statewide
took aim at the retirement benefits afforded
public employees. On the last day of the
legislative session, the California State
Legislature passed The Public Employee
Pension Reform Act of 2012 (AB 340),
mandating major changes in public
employee pensions at all levels of state and
local government. This calls for us to reexamine
commitments made in the past to
see how they fit into the new law.
As big as these changes are, this department
has deliberately avoided being driven by
crisis. We have a public safety agenda. We
have a mission. We have developed and
deployed new strategies to advance that
mission—to make us more effective on the
street, in our criminal investigations, in our
courtrooms and our jails.
In responding to the crises and in
Looking back...
Message from Sheriff Bill Gore
continuing our work to advance our
mission, the Deputy Sheriff’s Association
has played a key role.
As Sheriff, I am in a unique position to
observe the leadership of our DSA. I see
how they interact with county leaders and
policymakers. I listen when they offer input
on policies and on decisions we are making
that directly affect deputy sheriffs. We don’t
always agree, but I am genuinely impressed
with the integrity of the positions taken.
They are carefully weighed, consistent with
DSA’s charter, and invariably considerate of
larger public concerns.
In some jurisdictions, employee unions
are fighting with city and county
administrators and making rude noises in
the public media. But in this county we’ve
charted a different course—marked by
professionalism, honesty, and respect. In
the words of Kipling, while many are losing
their heads, we’ve kept ours.
As a result, our DSA has earned the respect
of decision makers at the State Capitol and
the County Administration Center. And
that respect directly inures to the long-term
benefit of sheriff’s deputies in this county.
As a consequence, the public’s view of
this department remains undiminished. I
believe the people of this county love their
deputies!
All of this provides great momentum as we
move forward into the New Year. There’s
no limit to what we can accomplish if we
keep our focus on our mission, hold fast
to our principles, and work together as a
formidable team.
Wishing you and your family a joyous
holiday season and wonderful New Year.
Do well and stay safe.
We’re Halfway There!
Update on the Union Institute & University classes
In just four months, two deputy sheriffs, a La Mesa police officer,
a California State Parks ranger, a California State University
Police Officer, a sheriff’s sergeant, three police lieutenants, a
sheriff’s lieutenant, a recently retired police chief, and a current
chief of police, will have earned their Bachelor of Science in
Criminal Justice Management while attending Union Institute &
University classes at the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association building in
Poway. These students have been attending classes approximately
every other Thursday night for the past four months. That’s a total
of only twenty nights of classes to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
Any peace officer with an associate degree and a POST basic
certificate and some advanced officer training probably qualifies
for our inexpensive and accelerated program. Those without an
associate degree will find that our certified learning credits will
help them obtain their goal of a bachelor’s degree if they cannot
find the time or money to finish their associate degree at a local
community college. Union has identified over 60 law enforcement
classes that transfer to academic credits. We do it better than
anyone. No need to take classes that you don’t need.
Union is an accredited non-profit university. All we want to do
is provide you an affordable opportunity to obtain your bachelor
degree as soon as practical in a comfortable environment with
knowledgeable instructors. All of the students in the current
class got started by asking for a free assessment of their academic
and law enforcement experience. They simply submitted a few
documents. Within a few days, they knew their required classes
and cost.
The next session starts Jan. 7. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a
Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management in just eight
months? Call me, Don Crist, at (858) 212-2416, or email me at
Volunteers and donations
needed for Holiday Basket
program
The Encinitas Sheriff’s Station is again partnering with
the Community Resource Center and San Diego County
Fairgrounds for the Holiday Basket Program. During the past
several years, the program has allowed low income families to
enjoy a bountiful holiday. This year, beginning on Friday, Dec.
14 and concluding on Sunday, Dec. 16, bicycles, toys, clothing,
and food will be distributed to over 1,500 families.
Leading up to the event, sheriff’s employees refurbish donated
bicycles, so they are suitable for distribution. Over the course of
a month, the fairgrounds are transformed by the Community
Resource Center into a magical holiday setting. There will be
music, snacks, and a special room with the main guest of honor;
Santa Claus.
While children enjoy crafts and movies, parents shop discreetly.
Toys and articles of clothing are selected for each person in the
family. There will be an area for baby items, that include diapers,
strollers, and cribs. Each family will receive at least one box of
assorted canned food, with a larger family receiving up to four
boxes. Families get to pick what they need and want, instead
of being handed an impersonal box of goods. The final stop is
the checkout, where families are matched with bikes. They also
receive a frozen turkey.
In addition, deliveries are made to homebound seniors, so
they too can enjoy a wonderful holiday. The Senior Volunteer
Patrol helps deliver baskets each year, which include gifts and
household items.
Volunteers are needed to organize drives, help set up, and be
part of distribution. Please email HB@crcncc.org or call (760)
230-6305 to volunteer. Overall, more than 1,600 volunteers
and staff will work around the clock to organize food, toys,
outerwear and much more at the Del Mar Fairgrounds site.
Priority items for the Holiday Baskets program currently include
non-perishable food (canned or boxed), blankets, new toys
and teen gifts, and diapers of all sizes. The preferred donation
deadline is Dec. 14, but items will be accepted through the last
day of distribution.
The City of Del Mar and the Del Sol Lions have teamed-up to
collect new and gently used blankets and jackets for the annual
Holiday Basket Program. If you are interested in supporting
this program, please bring unwrapped blankets and jackets
to the Del Mar City Hall Lobby at 1050 Camino Del Mar
during normal business hours. Items will be collected through
Wednesday, December 14, 2012.
For online donations, volunteer opportunities, list of currently
needed new and gently used items, and other information,
please go to www.crcncc.org Please help the Encinitas Station
and the Community Resource Center make this another
successful year!
MILITARY
RESERVISTS
RECOGNITION
CEREMONY
As part of recognizing Veteran’s Day, the San Diego Sheriff’s
Department dedicated a new plaque at Ridgehaven to honor
department members who serve as reservists.
Sheriff Gore began the ceremony by saying, “It is an honor to recognize
the men and women who choose to not only serve San Diego County
as deputies and professional staff, but also choose to serve our country
during these difficult times. Today, we are here to celebrate military
reservists and their commitment to their dual demanding duties as
deputy sheriffs and professional staff for the sheriff’s department. It
takes a special person to commit endless hours and dedicate themselves
to both duties and find time to balance all their assigned duties and
personal lives.”
The new installation includes two plaques. The first recognizing
the branches of the military. A dedication plaque lists department
employees who have served in the military and deployed after 9/11.
Unfortunately, accurate records before 9/11 are not available.
The San Diego Sheriff’s Department has worked hard over recent years
to ensure that deployed department employees and their families are
supported throughout their time away from the department. From care
packages to regular correspondence, these deputies and professional
staff are not forgotten. Gore pointed out during his recognition speech
that, when a member of the department receives orders to deploy, they
have better tools to be prepared before deployment and when they
return to their civilian lives.
This plaque has been carefully designed to recognize our military reserves. Our
American Flag is above the seven seals of our branches of the US armed forces.
Each military branch stands at equal distance and balance from each other.
None of the branches are higher or lower than the other. All photos courtesy of
2012 in Review
While 2012 saw many changes in the command staff
of the department, the DSA and its members had
a much quieter year. All three incumbents David
DiCarlo, Dustin Lopez, and Hank Turner were re-elected to
the board and the elected officers remained the same. Trying to
focus on the members, the board of directors worked to bring
about a range of events and
opportunities.
Once again, the annual dinner dance broke attendance records
with a lively St. Patrick’s Day event. With so many deputies and
their dates dressed in green, there was definitely a stroke of luck
in the air that night. Although high winds loomed outside, the
tent allowed dancers to stay on the floor late into the night.
Being an election year, much
of the focus stayed on the
primary and general elections.
As usual, the DSA endorsed
several candidates, who they
believe have the best interest
of members in mind. More
importantly, the DSA teamed
up with law enforcement
associations across the state to
fight legislation attacking our
pensions and benefits. Despite
efforts, a pension reform bill
was passed just as the session
ended.
In April, new Store Manager Ken Docken took the helm of the
DSA Store. He worked to expand the uniform and gear range. If
you haven’t been to the DSA Store this year, you should stop by
and check out the amazing deals on duty gear.
For the second year, the DSA helped subsidize members’ trips
to the state and national memorials. Bringing a contingency of
deputies to the memorials allows our nine deputies killed in the
line of duty to never be forgotten.
The DSA also expanded its education program with the Union
Institute University and National University, offering classes at
the DSA offices. The DSA hopes that the accessibility of these
classes will help more members earn
their degree.
While the DSA prepared for
negotiations next year and the
impact of the new pension reform
and worker’s comp legislation, focus
turned towards two of our members.
Det. Ali Perez and Sgt. Craig Johnson
were wounded in a gun battle. While
Craig was released from the hospital
quickly, Ali Perez underwent several
money raised allowed his family to stay by his side and help
On Saturday, November 3, over 300
motorcycles filled the DSA parking lot to
support wounded deputy Ali Perez and
his family. Spearheaded by James Bovet,
with support of the DSA, the SD LEO
Wives, and several deputies, the quickly
organized event raised over $14,000.
While Ali was not able to ride, he cheered
past the hospital. He expressed interest
in making the ride an annual event to
him to ride.
PERT PERSPECTIVE
Kathy Rose, Ph.D., LMFT - PERT Team Leader
Asperger Syndrome or Asperger’s Disorder is a developmental disorder
considered by many to be a mild, higher-functioning form of Autism.
Asperger’s is characterized by difficulties in social interactions,
restricted or highly focused interests which present as almost
fixations with particular topics or objects of interest; lack of or
restricted empathy; monotonic speech, as well as long-winded,
one-sided conversations with no regard for other’s reactions or
input; poor motor coordination and odd posturing; naivety and
eccentricity. A person with Asperger Syndrome will have difficulty
in reading and conveying nonverbal communication as well as
interpreting social interactions.
Asperger’s is typically diagnosed in childhood. It can be more
challenging to identify than autism, since Asperger’s involves fewer
and less pronounced symptoms. Unlike autism, language development
is generally not delayed in Asperger’s Disorder. Cognitive deficits are
also not as pronounced and most children with Asperger’s fall in the
normal range of intelligence, giving a more optimistic prognosis for
quality of life. Onset appears to be later than that of autism, although
it is unknown if this is a function of its less pronounced symptomlogy.
Asperger’s is seen in significantly higher frequency among males, and
research suggests an increased frequency among family members with
the disorder.
Anxiety and frustration contribute to the ability to function in social
settings for children who suffer from Asperger’s Disorder. Studies
conducted under the auspices of the National Institute of Mental
Health have indicated that relaxation techniques to mitigate the effects
of frustration can have a significant impact. Highly structured and
predictable environments have also been shown to help these children
better cope in both school and home settings, as change is not welltolerated.
Children with Asperger’s Disorder may also be prone to depression,
as they are drawn to forming social relationships and friendships but
are often frustrated in these attempts due to their inappropriate or odd
behaviors being “off-putting” to others. Social isolation often becomes
the norm for children with Asperger’s Disorder.
Treatment for Asperger’s Disorder typically focuses on training in
social skills and heightening the ability to read social cues when
engaging with others; addressing frustration through behavior
modification and education (cognitive behavioral therapy); individual
psychotherapy to assist with emotional issues related to the diagnosis;
and psychiatric medications which can be utilized to address issues of
depression, agitation, hyperactivity, irritability, compulsive behaviors,
and anxiety.
While Asperger’s is not “curable,” with appropriate interventions
most persons diagnosed with the disorder can lead relatively normal
and independent lives as adults. For more information on the topic of
Asperger Syndrome, contact the San Diego Regional Center at: www.
Chaplain’s Corner
by Chaplain Herb Smith
“And lo, the star, which the magi had seen in the east, went on before them,
until it came and stood over where the Child was. And when they saw
the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And they came into the
house and saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell down and
worshiped Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of
gold and frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:9-12).
During the Christmas break my family enjoys an annual day at Knott’s
Berry Farm, a gracious gift of affordability by Knott’s for law enforcement
and firefighters. One of our favorite traditions there is enjoying a short
play at the Bird Cage Theater of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and O.
Henry’s Gift of the Magi. Both are excellent. One illustrates the thrilling
change that takes place in the human heart when the charity of Christmas
envelopes the spirit:
“Scrooge was better than his word. He did it all, and infinitely more; and
to Tiny Tim, who did not die, he was a second father. He became as good
a friend, as good a master, and as good a man, as the good old city knew,
or any other good old city, town, or borough, in the good old world…
Ever afterwards… it was always said of him that he knew how to keep
Christmas well…”
But the other story demonstrates the priceless joy that satisfies our
highest desires when love’s sacrifice is borne for another. I find this
story even more intriguing because although Scrooge’s story resolves
the burden of a dark and pitiless soul, O’ Henry’s Jim and Della takes
such love to its highest expression. So deep is their love for each other
that there is nothing held in reserve toward their greater longing for
what each surmises to be the other’s most extravagant yearning; and
they through their near despairing poverty to provide it, find the means
in the very object of that yearning (I strive to keep the ending a secret
here, should you decide to enjoy this happy Knott’s tradition as well).
What they succeed in giving each other are objects of much sacrifice but
alas of scarce practical use, yet thoroughly singular, and of perennial
significance.
What were the gifts of the magi (a caste of scholarly men from the
east specializing in astrology, medicine, natural science and ancient
prophesy)? They had seen a star that, from their vantage point, was
arising out of Israel: “A star shall come forth from Jacob (another name
for Israel), and a scepter shall rise out of Israel”… (Numbers 24:17).
They came to Jerusalem in search of a new born King, to worship Him.
They were sent by King Herod to Bethlehem, where the prophet Micah
centuries prior foretold the Messiah would be born: “And you, Bethlehem,
land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; for out
of you shall come forth a ruler, who will shepherd My people Israel”
(Micah 5:2).
According to the New Testament book of Matthew, they found Him
there, in a house, now some months old, probably by representation from
the shepherds who attended to Him the night He was born, astonished
as they were. When the magi saw Him, “they fell down and worshiped
Him; and opening their treasures they presented to Him gifts of gold and
frankincense and myrrh” (Matthew 2:11).
Each of these gifts had value not only for what they were, as valuable today
as they were then, but for what they signi-ied. Gold was the substance of
kings, rightly adorning crown and position. Frankincense, an aromatic
tree gum used in incense, was utilized by priests in the temple while
intercession was being made for the people. Myrrh, also resin from tree
sap, was used medicinally in a balm or salve by physicians for healing.
The Southwest Corner
Fall is upon us and the temperatures are quickly
starting to drop throughout the county. It seems,
though, that with the drop in temperatures,
people’s natural ability to make good choices
has dropped as well…
I.B. (Night) Spa?
I remember in the academy, sitting in my seat,
listening to all of the seasoned instructors tell
us about how our new careers will provide the
most interesting subject matter for stories later
in life and that we will experience things on
patrol that you just can’t make up. Well, one
of those moments came a few weeks ago when
we received the call of an “Unknown Trouble.”
Basically, the reporting party (RP) had heard
someone calling for help way out in the distance,
but didn’t know where it was coming from and
couldn’t find the person.
Reserve Lt. Gary Reid, Reserve Dep. Percy
Pedroso, and I were first on scene trying to
find these so-called “calls for help.” As we were
walking up this barren, cold bike path at some
wee-hour in the morning, looking for someone
in distress, we could hear a faint voice trying
to get our attention in the distance. As we got
closer and shined our flashlights on the person,
we quickly discovered a male completely stuck
about chest-deep in a giant mud puddle (saying
“puddle” makes it sound tiny, but you could
literally roll a VW Bug into this thing and it
would probably swallow the whole thing up). I
immediately tried to get close to the guy, but was
quickly deterred after starting to sink into the
mud about 30 feet away from him. It reminded
me of quick sand from an Indiana Jones movie,
“Grab the snake!”
Luckily, my beat partner that night, Dep. Steve
Sepulveda, and Sgt. Marilu Marcq were quick
to arrive right after we found him. We tried
hailing for the fire department to respond for
a rescue, but the bike path was so secluded and
narrow, it was not going to happen with a fire
truck. With the quick wit and decisiveness of
Deputy Sepulveda, who thought to grab a rope
from his patrol car, and the help of Lieutenant
Reid and Deputy Pedroso, we were able to win
the tug-o-war against the mud hole and pull
the guy to safety. Unlike a resort and spa, I’m
sure the phrase “Mud Bath” means something
completely different to him now!
Deputy Of The Month
Before shift change, while with Team 3, Dep.
Doug Morse received a call to investigate a 911
hang-up. When he arrived, he encountered a
man standing in his doorway with a large knife
in his hand and two small children with him.
The man told Deputy Morse he was feeling
suicidal and eventually barricaded himself
inside his apartment with the children. Deputy
Morse also heard the male may have had a
loaded shotgun in the residence as well. Against
these difficult odds, Deputy Morse showed his
true colors of why law enforcement was his
career choice.
Deputy Morse kept his composure and patience,
as he talked with the suspect for an extensive
period of time. Deputy Morse was able to
develop a rapport with the suspect, and while
doing so, was able to sneak one of the small
children out the door to safety. Deputy Morse
continued to de-escalate the situation with his
calm demeanor enough for the suspect to give
up the second child and eventually surrender
himself without incident. Looks like a future
Crisis Negotiator to me! Great job, Doug!
A Good Time Had By All…
(Except Two)
Who knew driving a truck that wasn’t yours,
with no license plates, and committing several
traffic violations would get the attention of the
sheriff’s department? Weird, right?! Well, this
next story is about a guy and girl who thought
they were faster than the law.
Reserve Lt. Lyle Mowery had joined us in IB on
what was expected to be another busy Friday
night. There was another home football game
at Mar Vista HS, and, if anything reminded us
of the previous week, it was that ANYTHING
could happen. Late in the evening, Lt. Mowery
spotted a pick-up truck with no plates, driven by
a guy who apparently thought stop signs said,
“Go ahead, it’s no big deal.” Lt. Mowery thought
this particular driver needed an intervention to
remind him of basic traffic safety laws. As the LT
was putting out the stop on the radio, I heard a
definite change in tone in his voice. As soon as
the words “failing to yield” came out across the
radio, we knew the chase was on.
The driver took off in an attempt to get away,
but the LT was right on him the whole time.
Ali and Family, first and foremost, you are loved;
we know you are in good hands. We’re still here
if you need anything. So glad you are back at
home. There are so many great stories of how
the communities have stepped up to support
your family.
As a matter of fact, while I was obtaining a
raffle gift from Oggi’s for the motorcycle run,
a gentleman sitting next to me purchased a gift
card for to me to use as well. He overheard my
conversation and wanted to help support you as
well. When I went to buy my Rubio’s lunch in
El Cajon, the line that formed was outstanding.
Everyone was patient and kind to one another,
knowing that the reason they were there was to
help a “family member.”
I have a correction to make from our September
station report. Evidently, we got carried away
with excitement and pride of Ashley Stewart’s
graduation. It was in fact the Naval Basic
Training that she completed. No disrespect
intended to those Academy graduates. We’re
still heck-a proud of you Ashley!
Speaking of people in the Navy, one of our own
went up to the Veterean’s Day celebration at
When the September station
around, it was just before
the breaking news that
another Cajon Zone family
are expecting a little boy bundle in March of
wonderful dahling. It is so special to stay in
touch with work family—hint, hint Chris,
Sherry, and Teresa.
We shared a big special day with Kim Van Abel.
She has now reached the magic “retire anytime
I want to” age. Your looks are not a day over
40 girl! I believe a certain elf is next on the list.
Let’s just say we’ve doing our fair share to keep
Tiffany busy. Finally, Mark you really are a class
act with a heart of gold that is all Kim’s. Thank
you from all of us!
We have had some additions to our roster out
here as well. Rae Costa has made herself very
comfortable here in The Zone. I don’t think I
ever really welcomed Sgt. Russ Shimmin to the
El Cajon field office; sharing his time with other
CSB field offices. Sergeant Bill Giltner has joined
Ernest Jones shows off his “other uniform” during a ceremony honoring
reservists at Ridgehaven.
us in the S-2 office, which sometimes tends to
be a hot seat, as some of the sergeants haven’t
stayed long enough to let the moss grow under
their feet. Guess who’s back in the CSB: Lt. Brian
Conway, who is also sharing his supervisory
skills with other CSB offices. Glad to have you
all.
Last but definitely not least, I want to mention
the efforts of all who participated in the
Movember campaign. Here in El Cajon we had
two teams going: one from Jim McFarland’s
Cross Fit Gym (Cross Fit Pride) and one
established by Tony Dillard (El Cajones.) As
the teams grew their mustaches and fundraised
through November, a recap (with photos) will
be in next month’s issue.
Thank you to everyone in El Cajon who donated
towards our plaque at the Fallen Deputy
Memorial at Ridgehaven. Thank you also to the
Honorary Deputy Sheriff’s Association who
have worked hard to get the funding for this
memorial.
It is that time of year to give thanks and be
giving. We hope you all have a wonderful time
creating sweet memories with your loved ones.
We pray for all who are away from home and
those who have lost theirs due to Hurricane
Sandy.
“Somehow, not only
for Christmas but all
the long year through,
the joy that you give to
others
is the joy that comes
back to you. And the
more you spend in
blessing the poor and
lonely and sad, the
more of your heart’s
possessing returns
to make you glad.”
will be ordered in January.
Order forms are available
online on the “Retired
Members” page or may be requested from the DSA office.
Orders are due before January 15 and will be delivered
the first week of February. The cards may be ordered by
anyone who retired from the department, even if you are
not a DSA member. Please type or print clearly as cards
will be printed exactly
how form is filled out.
To keep costs down, we
only order cards a few
