Santa Reads the Star CONTEST WINNING PHOTO: After visiting with one of four State Troopers in Copper Center, Alaska, Lt. Scott Miller caught Santa reading the Silver Star. MILITARY RESERVISTS RECOGNITION CEREMONY As part of recognizing Veteran’s Day, the San Diego Sheriff’s Department dedicated a new plaque at Ridgehaven to honor department members who serve as reservists. Sheriff Gore began the ceremony by saying, “It is an honor to recognize the men and women who choose to not only serve San Diego County as deputies and professional staff, but also choose to serve our country during these difficult times. Today, we are here to celebrate military reservists and their commitment to their dual demanding duties as deputy sheriffs and professional staff for the sheriff’s department. It takes a special person to commit endless hours and dedicate themselves to both duties and find time to balance all their assigned duties and personal lives.” The new installation includes two plaques. The first recognizing the branches of the military. A dedication plaque lists department employees who have served in the military and deployed after 9/11. Unfortunately, accurate records before 9/11 are not available. The San Diego Sheriff’s Department has worked hard over recent years to ensure that deployed department employees and their families are supported throughout their time away from the department. From care packages to regular correspondence, these deputies and professional staff are not forgotten. Gore pointed out during his recognition speech that, when a member of the department receives orders to deploy, they have better tools to be prepared before deployment and when they return to their civilian lives. This plaque has been carefully designed to recognize our military reserves. Our American Flag is above the seven seals of our branches of the US armed forces. Each military branch stands at equal distance and balance from each other. None of the branches are higher or lower than the other.
