Update on the Union Institute & University classes In just four months, two deputy sheriffs, a La Mesa police officer, a California State Parks ranger, a California State University Police Officer, a sheriff’s sergeant, three police lieutenants, a sheriff’s lieutenant, a recently retired police chief, and a current chief of police, will have earned their Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management while attending Union Institute & University classes at the Deputy Sheriffs’ Association building in Poway. These students have been attending classes approximately every other Thursday night for the past four months. That’s a total of only twenty nights of classes to obtain a bachelor’s degree. Any peace officer with an associate degree and a POST basic certificate and some advanced officer training probably qualifies for our inexpensive and accelerated program. Those without an associate degree will find that our certified learning credits will help them obtain their goal of a bachelor’s degree if they cannot find the time or money to finish their associate degree at a local community college. Union has identified over 60 law enforcement classes that transfer to academic credits. We do it better than anyone. No need to take classes that you don’t need. Union is an accredited non-profit university. All we want to do is provide you an affordable opportunity to obtain your bachelor degree as soon as practical in a comfortable environment with knowledgeable instructors. All of the students in the current class got started by asking for a free assessment of their academic and law enforcement experience. They simply submitted a few documents. Within a few days, they knew their required classes and cost. The next session starts Jan. 7. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Management in just eight months? Volunteers and donations needed for Holiday Basket program The Encinitas Sheriff’s Station is again partnering with the Community Resource Center and San Diego County Fairgrounds for the Holiday Basket Program. During the past several years, the program has allowed low income families to enjoy a bountiful holiday. This year, beginning on Friday, Dec. 14 and concluding on Sunday, Dec. 16, bicycles, toys, clothing, and food will be distributed to over 1,500 families. Leading up to the event, sheriff’s employees refurbish donated bicycles, so they are suitable for distribution. Over the course of a month, the fairgrounds are transformed by the Community Resource Center into a magical holiday setting. There will be music, snacks, and a special room with the main guest of honor; Santa Claus. While children enjoy crafts and movies, parents shop discreetly. Toys and articles of clothing are selected for each person in the family. There will be an area for baby items, that include diapers, strollers, and cribs. Each family will receive at least one box of assorted canned food, with a larger family receiving up to four boxes. Families get to pick what they need and want, instead of being handed an impersonal box of goods. The final stop is the checkout, where families are matched with bikes. They also receive a frozen turkey. In addition, deliveries are made to homebound seniors, so they too can enjoy a wonderful holiday. The Senior Volunteer Patrol helps deliver baskets each year, which include gifts and household items. Volunteers are needed to organize drives, help set up, and be part of distribution. Overall, more than 1,600 volunteers and staff will work around the clock to organize food, toys, outerwear and much more at the Del Mar Fairgrounds site. Priority items for the Holiday Baskets program currently include non-perishable food (canned or boxed), blankets, new toys and teen gifts, and diapers of all sizes. The preferred donation deadline is Dec. 14, but items will be accepted through the last day of distribution. The City of Del Mar and the Del Sol Lions have teamed-up to collect new and gently used blankets and jackets for the annual Holiday Basket Program. If you are interested in supporting this program, please bring unwrapped blankets and jackets to the Del Mar City Hall Lobby at 1050 Camino Del Mar during normal business hours. Items will be collected through Wednesday, December 14, 2012. Around Town: Kid-Friendly Holiday Events Breakfast with Santa at Seaport Village: Santa makes an appearance, in his traditional garb for Breakfast with Santa at the Harbor House Restaurant on Dec. 15 and 16, 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The morning includes a full breakfast, picture with Santa, face painting, balloon artists, kids show, and a gift for the kids. Seaport Village is open daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Stores will observe special holiday hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas day and will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Santa at Seaport Village welcomes families and groups of any size, including pets, for photos. How the Grinch Stole Christmas: Back for its 15th incredible year, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas!” is a wonderful, whimsical musical based upon the classic Dr. Seuss book. Celebrate the holidays as the Old Globe Theatre is once again transformed into the snow-covered Whoville, right down to the last can of Who-hash. The play runs through Dec. 26. The 11 a.m. matinee performances are open to all ages. Everyone must have a ticket. Children under age 3 will not be admitted except during 11 am performances. LEGOLAND Holly Jolly Holidays: LEGOLAND California is gearing up for the biggest, brightest and coolest holiday celebration ever with Holiday Snow Days. Snow falls nightly as guests enjoy the world’s largest LEGO® Christmas tree. New this year, Fun Town is transformed into a winter wonderland with a snow play area where families can build a snowman using LEGO carrots and other fun LEGO elements and throw snowballs at targets. Along with the snowfilled fun, Holiday Snow Days feature festive entertainment including carolers, elves, strolling magicians; Santa and his holiday helpers; an enchanting holiday musical; and nightly fireworks Dec. 26 through 31. All Holiday Snow Days activities are included in the price of LEGOLAND California admission. On Dec. 31, the park celebrates its Kids’ New Year’s Eve with a kid-focused dance party, live music, and a “midnight”Brick Drop, which is modeled after the Times Square ball drop with fireworks to welcome 2011. The LEGOS drop at 6 p.m., so you can celebrate the New Year without losing any sleep. San Diego Zoo Jungle Bells: The new Jingle Bells celebration takes over the zoo Dec. 15 through Jan. 6. It is free with regular admission. Visit Santa at Canyon Cafe through Dec. 23. or take a spin on the ice skating rink at Sabertooth Grill. The zoo is closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration: Waves of holiday spirit splash over you during SeaWorld’s Christmas Celebration! Carols fill the air, a sparkling Sea of Trees lights up the water and skaters dance on ice. This year the event features Snow World, Santa’s Village, and Breakfast with Shamu and Santa. The celebration runs weekends through Dec. 16, and then daily Dec. 22 through Jan. 5.
