The Thanksgiving holiday is over and we’re
back to work. Hopefully everyone had a
great time getting together
with friends and family.
Now we’re in full swing
of the holiday season.
Admittedly, I’m not a fan
of the hysteria that goes
along with this time of
year. Maybe I’ve handled
too many holiday theft
or fraud calls or holiday
domestic disputes?
One of the traditions I
am fond of is additional
opportunities to spend
time with friends and family. As we
engage in holiday revelry, we are exposed
to decadent food, treats, and plenty of
alcoholic beverages. Of course, all are fine
in moderation; however I have admittedly
overindulged in all three. At the risk of
sounding like your mother, I’ll make my
plea anyway.
Have fun during the season; however, if you
have too much to drink, have a plan. Stay at
a nearby hotel, designate a sober driver, call
a cab, a friend, or even a DSA director. We
want you to have a great holiday season, but
nothing will ruin that faster than hurting
yourself, someone else, or landing in jail
for a DUI arrest. I know, we’re all adults
and we’re responsible law enforcement
types too, but we have already had one
member end up on the wrong side of a jail
cell for DUI this season. Enjoy, but do so
responsibly.
The end of the year also signals annual
DSA director elections, giving you the
opportunity to shape the direction of your
board. Though it’s hard to believe, it has
already been three years and I am up for
re-election. I will spare you my re-election
discourse for now, since you can read that
when you receive the election materials
later this month.
The past three years have been busy and
enlightening. For the last year I’ve had the
distinct pleasure of serving as your DSA
president and it has been my honor to serve
as the leader of our association. With the
expiration of my term, my
presidential term is also
coming to an end.
After much consideration,
I have decided to run for
re-election to the board;
however, I will not pursue
another term as president.
So, with the New Year, I
will also have a new work
assignment. Where will
I land? Wherever that
may be, I look forward to
getting back into mix of
day-to-day department operations.
A couple of weeks ago, Director Dustin
Lopez and I attended the conference of the
State Association of County Retirement
Systems. Though we had hoped for the
clouds to clear and have some great
revelation, we simply learned, they too
have a lot of unanswered questions about
the Public Employees’ Pension Reform Act
of 2013. One of the most commonly asked
questions I’ve had to deal with recently is the
conversion of unused or accumulated sick
time to service credit. Though not entirely
clear, it does NOT appear this benefit will
be jeopardized by this legislation.
While at the conference, Det. Ali Perez
was released from the hospital and is now
recovering at home. I have also delivered
the proceeds from the DSA’s fundraising
efforts. The many fundraising events were
a great success, and the proceeds will allow
his family to be by his side during his long
recovery, ensuring their financial stability
throughout. On behalf of all involved, I
thank you for graciousness in giving your
time, money, and moral support.
As previously mentioned, this is most
likely my last month as your DSA
president. With that, this is my last
president’s report. I look forward to
working with many of you in the field in
the near future. Until then, stay busy, be
safe, be healthy, and be well!
