Media & Film Mr I O’Rourke The Media & Film department has much to celebrate so far this year and many things to look forward to in 2011. The first high point was on the GCSE and A Level results days in August, when staff were delighted to note the high standards of attainment reached by most pupils. A*-C was 87% at GCSE and 100% of A Level pupils attained a D or higher— well done to all! The department has also started teaching the first year of A Level Film Studies. The new Year 9 cohort have made a confident start to their GCSE course and have already displayed their skills as media analysts in recent textual deconstructions. Pupils who have worked particularly well this term include Channing Davies, Lambert Kalongo, Joel Ringer and Kirsty Lam. Year 10 have been working hard on their induction course and have been focussing recently on constructing original film posters in preparation for their coursework. Creative work has already been produced by Megan Tunley, Zach Ghazi-Torbati, Louis Curtis, Ella Butler-Kavanagh and Broni Coles. Year 11 pupils have been busy completing pieces of coursework for their final folders based on ideas for posters advertising new teen films and excellent work has been done by Alana Thomas, Lisa Gourley and Joe Clissold. Year 13 pupils have been working hard this term on their coursework module, which is worth 50% of their total A2 grade. They have been producing research investigations on topics of their own choosing and towards the end of term started planning their creative pieces. Particularly strong pieces of work have been produced by Bethan Savoury, Sophie Chatham, Darren Breed, Becky Boyce and Alex Mancuso. Year 12 pupils are starting their coursework module soon and are already planning their films! Pupils who have already produced excellent work include Olivia Davies, Jacob Smith, Jordan Holt, Sam Green, Jennifer Adams and Tom Campion. Earlier in the term, a group of our Year 12 & 13 students participated in National Film Week and visited the Odeon Cinema at Cardiff Bay for a special screening of James Cameron’s Avatar. The department also created the digital displays for Stanwell’s production of ‘Grease’. Projections were used as part of the stage set with the original designs courtesy of Year 13 pupil, Matthew Goodfellow. Matt also helped with the production of the programme advertising the show. Film students from within the Media Department recorded the production for posterity!. Open Day was a great success this year. Year 12 & 13 coursework films were on show as was our portable lighting rig, film camera and editing suite. “The Media & Film department has much to celebrate this year and many things to look forward to in 2011.”
Modern Foreign Languages Mrs T Davis This term has seen a big change for us in the Modern Languages department as we have decided to strengthen the ties between French and German resulting in more joint ventures. The first evidence of this was the “Europa Café” on Open day. It’s popularity was unaffected by the change of name and if anything the wider range of cakes available made it even more popular! First prize went to Isla Williams (Y13) with her very imaginative “Hamburger” cup cake. Second prize went to Phoebe Christie (Y8) and joint third prize to Ellie Davis (Y13) and Emma Davies and Milly Williams (Y8). Amy Yeo (Y7) also had a prize for the best presentation as her cupcakes arrived in a beautiful box tied up with ribbon! There was a fabulous selection of cakes and biscuits, kindly baked by our talented students. Eva Vestergaard (Y9) baked an authentic German “Gugelhopf” cake which was delicious. The “Decorate a cup cake” competition took place again and the entries were wonderful and very creative, making choosing the winners very difficult. Luckily PC Emma Mudie was on hand to help us select the winners. We also had a quiz where people had to identify why various German and French people were famous. This was won by Daniel Casseldine (Y7) with a little help from mum! A big thank you to our helpers on the day: Martin Doyle (Y8), Ellie Davis (Y13), Ergenia Brusnitskaya (Y8) and Christina Bugert (Y8). “The Europa Café on Open Day was a huge success!”
