Workskills<br />

It is the second year of this BTEC course<br />

<strong>and</strong> has been introduced into Year 9 <strong>and</strong><br />

Year 11 for the first time. The Year 11 students<br />

have been completing their coursework<br />

from Year 10 <strong>and</strong> evaluating their Summer<br />

Work Experience placements. Some<br />

students will be able to go on <strong>and</strong> study for<br />

the Extended Certificate Qualification to gain<br />

a second ‘B’ grade GCSE.<br />

Year 9 <strong>and</strong> 10 pupils have been investigating<br />

Volunteering <strong>and</strong> welcomed Holly Williams<br />

from the Vale Volunteer Bureau as a<br />

guest speaker in October. Holly explained<br />

about the different types of volunteering<br />

Denny White from the Visible Department of<br />

the Vale of Glamorgan Council visited school<br />

on the 2 nd November to provide a Health <strong>and</strong><br />

Safety briefing with the Year 10 pupils <strong>and</strong> arranged<br />

for them to undertake litter picks with<br />

her team on Barry Isl<strong>and</strong>.<br />

when applying for employment or further<br />

education courses. Holly arranged for the<br />

Year 9 Pupils to volunteer with ‘Keep Wales<br />

Tidy Campaign’. The pupils undertook litter<br />

picks at The Knap <strong>and</strong> the Causeway in<br />

Barry <strong>and</strong> the Cliff Tops in Penarth.<br />

They gained teamwork <strong>and</strong> communication<br />

skills; learned about environmental responsibility<br />

<strong>and</strong> the highlight for many of the pupils<br />

was the hot chocolate from Marco’s Cafe on<br />

the Isl<strong>and</strong>! On the 19 th November the pupils<br />

visited the Council’s ALPS offices to collect<br />

their Certificates from Miles Punter ‘Head of<br />

Visible Services’ at Vale of Glamorgan Council.<br />
