Letter from <strong>the</strong> Editor Contents<br />

Dear Reader<br />

We are very pleased to report on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 install<strong>at</strong>ion for our customer<br />

in Stuttgart, Germany. The <strong>VVS</strong><br />

(Stuttgart Transport <strong>and</strong> Tariff Associ<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />

is not only one of <strong>the</strong> largest<br />

users of <strong>DIVA</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong>, <strong>the</strong>y are also<br />

a long-st<strong>and</strong>ing customer, who<br />

along with MVV (Munich Transport<br />

<strong>and</strong> Tariff Associ<strong>at</strong>ion) made it possible<br />

to develop transport planning<br />

software more than 25 years ago. By<br />

continuing to back mdv products<br />

<strong>and</strong> support innov<strong>at</strong>ion, our joint<br />

success is only valid<strong>at</strong>ed through our reliable, ongoing partnership. The<br />

article not only includes <strong>the</strong> views of project managers, it also pays particular<br />

<strong>at</strong>tention to <strong>the</strong> experience of staff th<strong>at</strong> work with <strong>DIVA</strong> on a dayto-day<br />

basis.<br />

While we were hard <strong>at</strong> work transitioning from <strong>DIVA</strong> 3 to <strong>DIVA</strong> 4, light rail<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>and</strong> bus drivers in Stuttgart took to <strong>the</strong> picket lines. The job<br />

<strong>the</strong>n fell to <strong>EFA</strong> to keep passengers up-to-d<strong>at</strong>e <strong>and</strong> informed on <strong>the</strong><br />

effects of <strong>the</strong> strike on city transport.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 can also supply our AVM light module. We report on an applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> VRN Transport Authority (Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Neckar).<br />

Finally, <strong>the</strong> second installment of our biannual user group was held in<br />

Bremerhaven, in <strong>the</strong> north of Germany. We report on <strong>the</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

<strong>and</strong> show <strong>the</strong> event in pictures.<br />

I wish you happy holidays <strong>and</strong> a successful 2012<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> <strong>10</strong> - <strong>Paradigm</strong> <strong>Change</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong><br />

<strong>Change</strong>d Thinking<br />

<strong>Paradigm</strong>s are a certain way of thinking or<br />

a particular world view. This certain way of<br />

thinking seems to imply th<strong>at</strong> our views<br />

pretty much stay constant over time. Yet a<br />

city-dweller’s view of public transport (PT)<br />

has changed over <strong>the</strong> past 20 years. They<br />

can no longer image being without public<br />

transport for <strong>the</strong>ir lifestyles in cities. It<br />

enables a degree of mobility th<strong>at</strong> is not<br />

available with o<strong>the</strong>r means of transport.<br />

It is for this reason th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> requirements<br />

regarding planning, implement<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong><br />

measuring public transport services have<br />

risen sharply in <strong>the</strong> past few years. Transport<br />

authorities are expected to be more<br />

precise <strong>and</strong> reliable with electronic media<br />

than ever before. H<strong>and</strong> in h<strong>and</strong> with this<br />

development are <strong>the</strong> increased requirements<br />

on tools th<strong>at</strong> provide <strong>the</strong>se services.<br />

But <strong>the</strong>re is a solution to <strong>the</strong>se challenges<br />

<strong>and</strong> it is called ‘<strong>DIVA</strong> 4’.<br />

Functionality, speed, quality, d<strong>at</strong>a security,<br />

flexibility, usability, maintainability, transparency,<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards – <strong>the</strong>se are all characteristics<br />

of a modern schedule management<br />

system, which may even be contradictory<br />

to one ano<strong>the</strong>r. The following paragraphs<br />

will illustr<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> places th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>se qualities<br />

are being implemented in <strong>DIVA</strong> 4.<br />

Functions<br />

The job of transport authorities was always<br />

to present transport services, to manage<br />

<strong>and</strong> calcul<strong>at</strong>e a uniform fare <strong>and</strong> possibly to<br />

adjust <strong>the</strong> services provided by o<strong>the</strong>r transport<br />

companies.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> past, present<strong>at</strong>ion tasks only inclu-<br />

ded publishing a timetable book <strong>and</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

stop timetables. Now <strong>the</strong> requirements<br />

are much gre<strong>at</strong>er, especially those which<br />

include real-time inform<strong>at</strong>ion. The up-to<strong>the</strong>-day<br />

<strong>and</strong> up-to-<strong>the</strong>-minute timetable is<br />

now required. In addition to print, electronic<br />

media also have to be supplied, which<br />

includes individual, mobile, collective <strong>and</strong><br />

st<strong>at</strong>ionary displays, vehicle displays <strong>and</strong><br />

spoken announcements.<br />

The supply of inform<strong>at</strong>ion systems <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

calcul<strong>at</strong>ion of performance need to be<br />

more precise.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 has accommod<strong>at</strong>ed elabor<strong>at</strong>e d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

structures in which e.g. route-rel<strong>at</strong>ed timetable<br />

versions have become possible.<br />

Timetables describe <strong>the</strong> “when” <strong>and</strong> “where”<br />

of a journey. Now with <strong>DIVA</strong> 4, geography<br />

is an integr<strong>at</strong>ed function of <strong>the</strong> system.<br />

Geography is not only <strong>the</strong> basis for displaying<br />

services, it is also used to loc<strong>at</strong>e vehicles<br />

<strong>and</strong> support navig<strong>at</strong>ion. It is also<br />

important for calcul<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong> kilometer performance.<br />

The D<strong>at</strong>abase, a Tight Corset<br />

The <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 Kernel is <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>abase, which<br />

provides high quality <strong>and</strong> transparency<br />

when saving d<strong>at</strong>a. Currently <strong>the</strong> generally<br />

accepted techniques enable a high level of<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a security. But integrity also has its<br />

price. D<strong>at</strong>a access is only possible using<br />

defined processes <strong>and</strong> interfaces <strong>and</strong> is<br />

thus more comput<strong>at</strong>ion- <strong>and</strong> time-intensive<br />

than <strong>the</strong> simple writing <strong>and</strong> reading of<br />

hard disks.<br />

Yet having d<strong>at</strong>abases does open up new<br />

possibilities th<strong>at</strong> were not possible in <strong>the</strong><br />

past. Two examples follow:<br />

In <strong>the</strong> past, <strong>the</strong> stop number was a primary<br />

key. For instance, if a system user wanted to<br />

change a number because two stops were<br />

to be merged to one, complex steps were<br />

required to make <strong>the</strong> change, especially if<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were trips th<strong>at</strong> served this stop. In<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 <strong>the</strong> stop number is an <strong>at</strong>tribute th<strong>at</strong><br />

must be unique, but th<strong>at</strong> can also be<br />

changed. These kinds of changes are done<br />

in just a few clicks.<br />

A popular fe<strong>at</strong>ure of routes in <strong>DIVA</strong> 3 was<br />

<strong>the</strong> property ‘Service on Christmas Eve <strong>and</strong><br />

on S<strong>at</strong>urdays’. To add this fe<strong>at</strong>ure to a route,<br />

one only had to check a box. This kind of<br />

property can be modelled with d<strong>at</strong>abases,<br />

but <strong>the</strong> impact on <strong>the</strong> calcul<strong>at</strong>ion of oper<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

days is enormous. For this reason a<br />

more efficient model using <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

day ‘S<strong>at</strong>urday’, with or without ‘Christmas<br />

Eve’ was preferred in <strong>DIVA</strong> 4. It seemed like<br />

a simple enough solution <strong>at</strong> first, but in talking<br />

with system users it became apparent<br />

th<strong>at</strong> some of <strong>the</strong> required inform<strong>at</strong>ion only<br />

mdv news II/2011 - 3<br />

became available quite l<strong>at</strong>e. Normally<br />

transport authorities announce <strong>the</strong>ir schedules<br />

just before Christmas. Checking a box<br />

is simple; changing an oper<strong>at</strong>ing day in <strong>the</strong><br />

d<strong>at</strong>abase is much more involved. So to<br />

resolve this issue, a function was cre<strong>at</strong>ed in<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 to simultaneously initi<strong>at</strong>e a change<br />

of oper<strong>at</strong>ing day for a route list. All subsequent<br />

functions are made to be consistent.<br />

The d<strong>at</strong>abase is viewed as a benefit for all<br />

system users. Performance losses regarding<br />

<strong>the</strong> file system solution are compens<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

through corresponding procedures <strong>and</strong><br />

parallel editing.<br />

Three User Interfaces<br />

The one thing all <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 functions have in<br />

common is <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>abase. The o<strong>the</strong>r is new<br />

<strong>and</strong> existing interfaces.<br />

The most up-to-d<strong>at</strong>e interface is <strong>DIVA</strong> Web.<br />

The aim is to have <strong>the</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>est amount of<br />

functionality occur over a browser interface.<br />

Currently, browser technology is possible<br />

for timetable management, common<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a management, all present<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>and</strong><br />

map displays. The browser interface already<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>s network management for authorities<br />

<strong>and</strong> is part of ongoing development.<br />

Browser technology is not yet fast enough<br />

for intensive editing of schedules during<br />

<strong>the</strong> peak times of timetable change. For<br />

this reason, <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 has enabled management<br />

in multiple windows for <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong><br />

Schedule module using a .Net interface.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule is currently <strong>the</strong> main workhorse<br />

of <strong>the</strong> timetable department.<br />

For oper<strong>at</strong>ional applic<strong>at</strong>ions like <strong>the</strong> Graphic<br />

Schedule <strong>and</strong> Duty Schedule <strong>and</strong> for<br />

<strong>the</strong> management of geography d<strong>at</strong>a, <strong>DIVA</strong><br />

has modules Vehicle Schedule, <strong>DIVA</strong> Duty<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> Geo. These are <strong>the</strong> known Windows<br />

interfaces th<strong>at</strong> have received a new<br />

d<strong>at</strong>abase substructure.<br />

St<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 supports all common st<strong>and</strong>ards, like<br />

<strong>the</strong> VDV in Germany, TransExchange in <strong>the</strong><br />

UK or <strong>the</strong> new EU st<strong>and</strong>ard NeTEx (Network<br />

<strong>and</strong> Timetable Exchange, see mdv news, 2,<br />

20<strong>10</strong>). Supporting a st<strong>and</strong>ard means th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 d<strong>at</strong>a structure is able to collect<br />

<strong>the</strong> contents of <strong>the</strong>se st<strong>and</strong>ards <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>re are corresponding interfaces to read<br />

<strong>and</strong> write <strong>the</strong>m.

4 mdv news II/2011<br />

Migr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

A customer like <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> in Stuttgart th<strong>at</strong><br />

has had <strong>DIVA</strong> for more than 25 years n<strong>at</strong>urally<br />

uses every function available to <strong>the</strong><br />

system. Even when programs are not<br />

exhaustively tested, <strong>the</strong>y get refined in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

with users. This was a main task<br />

for <strong>the</strong> last few years <strong>and</strong> customer <strong>and</strong><br />

supplier were pleased to be able to deliver<br />

all products by <strong>the</strong> end of November.<br />

Mrs. Beckert und Mr. Oldenbürger (both <strong>VVS</strong>)<br />

Timetable Management<br />

With <strong>DIVA</strong> 4, <strong>the</strong> number of modules was<br />

drastically reduced. Instead of having a<br />

plethora of individual programs in <strong>DIVA</strong> 3<br />

for stop management, common d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

management, oper<strong>at</strong>ing days, timetable<br />

management, book pages, stop timetables,<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> conversion, etc., <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 uses a common<br />

web interface called <strong>DIVA</strong> Web. Using<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> Web layout as a browser applic<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a can be accessed over <strong>the</strong> internet<br />

regardless of server loc<strong>at</strong>ion. The user interfaces<br />

were st<strong>and</strong>ardized with functions<br />

being grouped in overview menus.<br />

In addition to <strong>DIVA</strong> Web, <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule is<br />

also used as a client program to manage<br />

timetables. This rich client includes composite<br />

route management <strong>and</strong> connection<br />

management for planned connections.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule also provides <strong>the</strong> option to<br />

plan a simpler vehicle schedule. ‘Vehicle<br />

Schedule Light’ supplies consistency tests<br />

to check <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a for <strong>the</strong> corresponding<br />

general requirements. In this way, trips of<br />

multiple routes which have been combined<br />

into a route group can be planned into<br />

blocks. The finished blocks are subsequently<br />

exported <strong>at</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> (AFAB interface)<br />

for third-party ticket machines.<br />

Mr. Kappler, Mr. Rieg (bohth <strong>VVS</strong>) <strong>and</strong> Mr. Gölz (mdv)<br />

present <strong>the</strong> new print products<br />

Book Pages <strong>and</strong> Timetables<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>4 utilizes <strong>DIVA</strong> Publisher as a central<br />

element for <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion of print media.<br />

This module is where all types of print<br />

media are compiled, managed <strong>and</strong> printed.<br />

A current applic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> is <strong>the</strong> timetable<br />

book for <strong>the</strong> Stuttgart Region. Timetable<br />

books include <strong>the</strong> directories of<br />

routes <strong>and</strong> stops as well as oper<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>and</strong><br />

points of sale. The directory contents are<br />

autom<strong>at</strong>ically compiled from existing items<br />

when <strong>the</strong> folder is cre<strong>at</strong>ed (a folder is a collection<br />

of print products, e.g. a timetable<br />

book). But for <strong>the</strong> stop index, a new technology<br />

is in use: <strong>the</strong> map squares of stops<br />

are autom<strong>at</strong>ically accessed based on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

coordin<strong>at</strong>es. This makes manual d<strong>at</strong>a entry<br />

of map coordin<strong>at</strong>es unnecessary. The conversion<br />

of <strong>the</strong> coordin<strong>at</strong>e m<strong>at</strong>rix has also<br />

become simpler.<br />

The directories are followed by <strong>the</strong> book<br />

pages of <strong>the</strong> routes. Even items for advertisement<br />

<strong>and</strong> empty pages can be added as<br />

required. Multiple routes can be grouped<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r. Property columns can be displayed<br />

in <strong>the</strong> publisher view, which provide<br />

an overview of inform<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> items <strong>at</strong><br />

a glance. The following screenshot shows<br />

map items for a timetable book (see figure<br />

1).<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r ‘book page’ type applic<strong>at</strong>ion is <strong>the</strong><br />

mini timetable <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong>. More detail<br />

about this app can be found in <strong>the</strong> ‘maps’<br />

section below. This kind of timetable is<br />

where book pages are combined with a<br />

cover item <strong>and</strong> a route option map. The<br />

mini timetables are actually folding maps<br />

th<strong>at</strong> passengers can take with <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

There are several types of stop timetables<br />

th<strong>at</strong> are in use by <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong>. The cre<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

print products is done with <strong>the</strong> same layouts<br />

used in <strong>DIVA</strong> 3. The outputs have not<br />

changed from <strong>DIVA</strong> 3 to <strong>DIVA</strong> 4. In this way<br />

<strong>the</strong> CBS multi-stop timetables, <strong>the</strong> regular<br />

stop timetables <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> fare tables have<br />

remained identical to <strong>the</strong>ir previous versions<br />

(see figure 2)<br />

Figure 1: <strong>DIVA</strong> Web folder for timetable book<br />

Figure 2: Stop timetable

Maps<br />

One of <strong>the</strong> development goals of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 was<br />

to fully integr<strong>at</strong>e geography into <strong>the</strong> system,<br />

thus doing away with a strict division between<br />

managing timetable d<strong>at</strong>a <strong>and</strong> referencing<br />

geographic d<strong>at</strong>a. With <strong>the</strong> old barrier<br />

broken down, many functions th<strong>at</strong> had to be<br />

done in a separ<strong>at</strong>e module in a particular<br />

sequence can now be accomplished directly<br />

on <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong>-Web map. For example, cre<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

a new stop or georeferencing a route is a<br />

much more convenient process. The <strong>VVS</strong> has<br />

been using <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> system for passenger<br />

inform<strong>at</strong>ion to cre<strong>at</strong>e geographic network<br />

route maps in various scales since <strong>the</strong> timetable<br />

change in 2004/2005.<br />

Managing <strong>the</strong> respective definitions <strong>and</strong><br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ing PDF files has been integr<strong>at</strong>ed into<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>-Web. This year printing companies have<br />

been supplied with PDF files produced by<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>4.<br />

The large form<strong>at</strong> network route maps are <strong>the</strong><br />

stars of <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> map products. In <strong>the</strong> past,<br />

Figure 3: Managing route network maps in <strong>DIVA</strong> Web<br />

Figure 6: Managing mini timetables in <strong>DIVA</strong> Web<br />

mdv news II/2011 - 5<br />

every route had to be drawn by h<strong>and</strong> on a<br />

geographical map – a luxury th<strong>at</strong> could only<br />

be afforded once a year. Now it can be<br />

upd<strong>at</strong>ed on any day <strong>at</strong> any time with a click<br />

of <strong>the</strong> mouse using <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> Map Server (see<br />

figure 3).<br />

The PDF files of <strong>the</strong> route option maps can be<br />

sent to print unaltered. Manual editing is not<br />

required (see figure 4).<br />

The functionality “route option map” has<br />

been markedly improved <strong>and</strong> can be both<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ed into <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> system for passenger<br />

inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> used for scheduling purposes.<br />

Using <strong>the</strong> Map Requester assistant program,<br />

multiple routes can be selected <strong>and</strong><br />

displayed on a common map. For each route,<br />

one can select whe<strong>the</strong>r it should affect <strong>the</strong><br />

map section or whe<strong>the</strong>r only <strong>the</strong> so-called<br />

background route should be displayed.<br />

In order to integr<strong>at</strong>e route option maps into<br />

<strong>the</strong> route hierarchy of <strong>DIVA</strong> Web, one can now<br />

successively gener<strong>at</strong>e ei<strong>the</strong>r individual route<br />

options or all route options <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> same time<br />

(see figure 5).<br />

A lesser known applic<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> route<br />

option maps is <strong>the</strong> so-called Mini Timetable.<br />

It combines geographic route options <strong>and</strong><br />

tabular timetable inform<strong>at</strong>ion in a h<strong>and</strong>y form<strong>at</strong>,<br />

which is usually distributed folded<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The management of <strong>the</strong>se mini timetables<br />

has been fully integr<strong>at</strong>ed into <strong>DIVA</strong>-Web (see<br />

figures 6 <strong>and</strong> 7).

<strong>EFA</strong> <strong>10</strong><br />

mdv news II/2011 - 7<br />

In using <strong>DIVA</strong>4, <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> also committed to<br />

switching from <strong>EFA</strong>9 to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>. Due to <strong>the</strong><br />

more efficient d<strong>at</strong>a supply, more efficient<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ion of real-time d<strong>at</strong>a through<br />

incremental conversion in <strong>DIVA</strong>4 <strong>and</strong> more<br />

efficient processing of real-time d<strong>at</strong>a by<br />

<strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> <strong>the</strong> switch to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> was desired <strong>and</strong><br />

implemented.<br />

D<strong>at</strong>a supply from <strong>DIVA</strong>4 to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> has been<br />

made more convenient. In <strong>the</strong> past, d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

supply occurred in separ<strong>at</strong>e, individual processes.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>4 uses scripts in <strong>DIVA</strong>Web to<br />

make <strong>the</strong> supply of d<strong>at</strong>a to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> simpler<br />

(see figure 8).<br />

The conversion is essentially performed<br />

using 3 scripts:<br />

- Copy network version<br />

- Conversion<br />

- Export network version<br />

By copying a network version, a d<strong>at</strong>abase<br />

th<strong>at</strong> is intended for release to <strong>EFA</strong> is transferred<br />

to ano<strong>the</strong>r, separ<strong>at</strong>e network version.<br />

On <strong>the</strong> basis of this procedure, d<strong>at</strong>a is<br />

prepared for conversion for use in <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>.<br />

Network versions can also be exported so<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a is available for use in external<br />

systems. All three procedures can be displayed<br />

<strong>and</strong> analyzed in <strong>the</strong> DMS (D<strong>at</strong>a<br />

Management System) (see figure 9).<br />

Additional process steps have been integr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

into <strong>the</strong> script for <strong>EFA</strong> Conversion, two<br />

of which are d<strong>at</strong>a prepar<strong>at</strong>ion for <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong><br />

Loc<strong>at</strong>ion Server <strong>and</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>ion of elev<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a. The script can be upgraded <strong>and</strong><br />

customized. When <strong>the</strong> process is run, all<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a required for d<strong>at</strong>a supply to <strong>EFA</strong> are<br />

gener<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />

A very important functionality <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> is<br />

<strong>the</strong> use of real-time. One of <strong>the</strong> big advantages<br />

of <strong>DIVA</strong>4 <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> is <strong>the</strong> ability to<br />

quickly integr<strong>at</strong>e day-specific timetable<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a from AVM systems to <strong>EFA</strong>. Complete<br />

conversion is no longer required for this<br />

process. Instead, <strong>the</strong> day-specific d<strong>at</strong>a are<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ed into an intermedi<strong>at</strong>e form<strong>at</strong><br />

from which <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a are subsequently<br />

compiled. At <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> <strong>the</strong>re are now<br />

3 connected AVM systems:<br />

- DB (Deutsche Bahn or German Rail)<br />

- AVM-Light (3 transport authorities Dannenmann,<br />

Kappus <strong>and</strong> OVR-WRG)<br />

- SSB (Stuttgarter Straßenbahn or Tram)<br />

The DB d<strong>at</strong>a of <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> already contain <strong>the</strong><br />

trip IDs to determine delay messages. Dayspecific<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a with trip IDs are received by<br />

<strong>the</strong> SSB <strong>and</strong> AVM Light <strong>and</strong> subsequently<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ed to <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> system. The DMS is<br />

used to view <strong>and</strong> analyze <strong>the</strong>se processes<br />

(see figure <strong>10</strong>).<br />

The integr<strong>at</strong>ion of day-specific d<strong>at</strong>a <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

processing of <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a only take a few

minutes <strong>and</strong> are <strong>the</strong>n available for <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

planner. The system has been structured<br />

so th<strong>at</strong> additional AVM systems can be<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ed with rel<strong>at</strong>ive ease.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r salient functionality <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> is<br />

product present<strong>at</strong>ion, which can be accessed<br />

using <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>. The present<strong>at</strong>ion products<br />

are separ<strong>at</strong>e from <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> systems <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>VVS</strong>. There are two servers alloc<strong>at</strong>ed for <strong>the</strong><br />

present<strong>at</strong>ions where requests are processed<br />

by <strong>the</strong> load balancer. The process to<br />

gener<strong>at</strong>e stop timetables, book pages, stop<br />

area maps <strong>and</strong> route option maps work without<br />

a <strong>DIVA</strong>4 d<strong>at</strong>abase. The Map Server<br />

(responsible for route options <strong>and</strong> stop<br />

area maps) retrieves <strong>the</strong> required inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

from <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

manager (responsible for stop timetables<br />

<strong>and</strong> book pages) works with serialized d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

<strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> provides <strong>the</strong> same functionality as<br />

<strong>EFA</strong>9, but is divided into several process<br />

components in order to enable better scalability<br />

for <strong>the</strong> entire system. Process components<br />

th<strong>at</strong> were added with <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> were<br />

originally part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> Loc<strong>at</strong>ion Server<br />

(<strong>the</strong> Loc<strong>at</strong>ion Server is <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> search<br />

engine for origin <strong>and</strong> destin<strong>at</strong>ion regardless<br />

of form, stop, address, POIs etc.). In <strong>the</strong><br />

meantime, <strong>the</strong>y have been releg<strong>at</strong>ed more<br />

<strong>and</strong> more to backend processes for <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>.<br />

Of note is <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> PT Kernel split into a process<br />

th<strong>at</strong> only calcul<strong>at</strong>es public transport<br />

routes <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> Present<strong>at</strong>ion H<strong>and</strong>ler,<br />

which is responsible for timetable present<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

In addition, <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> IT Kernel was<br />

also split into a routing process <strong>and</strong> a GIS<br />

process. Customiz<strong>at</strong>ion, which used to be a<br />

part of <strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> Controller, is now its own<br />

web service. The architecture <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> can<br />

be differenti<strong>at</strong>ed between http-processes<br />

<strong>and</strong> backend processes (see figures 11 <strong>and</strong><br />

12).<br />

Outlook<br />

The introduction of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> was a<br />

milestone in <strong>the</strong> development of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4. It<br />

was a large <strong>and</strong> often difficult, but necessary<br />

task. The next step is to integr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

improvements to performance <strong>and</strong> usability<br />

into <strong>the</strong> next version. But <strong>the</strong> door is<br />

now open to fur<strong>the</strong>r develop <strong>the</strong> system to<br />

reap <strong>the</strong> benefits of <strong>the</strong> new pl<strong>at</strong>form. New<br />

topics are timetable management, especially<br />

in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with <strong>the</strong> Stuttgart<br />

Tram, who is currently transitioning to <strong>DIVA</strong><br />

4. One big remaining topic is <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

multi-tenancy so th<strong>at</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r transport authorities<br />

th<strong>at</strong> work with <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> can be integr<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />

In order to continually improve performance<br />

<strong>and</strong> have it be a part of future releases mdv<br />

requires quality feedback from its users. Mr.Torlach<br />

<strong>and</strong> Mr. Kappler, <strong>VVS</strong>, agreed to be interviewed<br />

about <strong>DIVA</strong> 4.<br />

Mr .Kappler, <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> has now been working<br />

productively in <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 for about 4 months.<br />

Wh<strong>at</strong> was different about this timetable<br />

change (2011/2012) as opposed to previous<br />

years?<br />

Mr. Kappler:<br />

Our first tests with <strong>DIVA</strong> 4<br />

started back in 2009. Earlier<br />

this year, we cre<strong>at</strong>ed a<br />

project timetable with<br />

mdv <strong>and</strong> tested <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 to<br />

see how it met our requirements.<br />

The issues th<strong>at</strong><br />

emerged could be dealt with <strong>at</strong> an early stage.<br />

However a few cases first arose in productive oper<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

so if something did not work properly, we<br />

needed to have a quick fix. IT made <strong>the</strong> timetable<br />

change 2011/12 exciting <strong>and</strong> intensive <strong>and</strong> required<br />

a high level of stamina from all parties involved.<br />

Mr.Torlach, <strong>the</strong> implement<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 was<br />

also linked to <strong>the</strong> transition to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>. To wh<strong>at</strong><br />

extent can one speak of a paradigm shift with<br />

regard to <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>?<br />

Mr. Torlach: With <strong>the</strong><br />

introduction of <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong>,<br />

<strong>the</strong> central <strong>EFA</strong> control file<br />

“Lnrlit” was replaced. The<br />

“Lnrlit” served as a kind of<br />

white list for <strong>EFA</strong> routes.<br />

The route versions’ intended<br />

uses replace <strong>the</strong><br />

function of <strong>the</strong> Lnrlit in<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4. This results in a transition to decentral<br />

route management, which can be done by a timetable<br />

scheduler. Particularly in <strong>the</strong> transition<br />

period before <strong>the</strong> timetable change, work was<br />

done carefully using two timetable projects to<br />

ensure integrity in <strong>EFA</strong>.<br />

In addition, it was important to quickly gener<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> present<strong>at</strong>ion products, stop timetables<br />

<strong>and</strong> book pages, using <strong>the</strong> new serializ<strong>at</strong>ion technique.<br />

The process of “serializ<strong>at</strong>ion” is a pre-calcul<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of timetable d<strong>at</strong>a for <strong>EFA</strong> into a binary d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

form<strong>at</strong>. This procedure had to be integr<strong>at</strong>ed into<br />

<strong>the</strong> regular <strong>EFA</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a release.<br />

Changing from an existing system with experienced<br />

personnel to a new <strong>and</strong> comprehensively<br />

revised software gener<strong>at</strong>ion poses many<br />

challenges. How did you adjust to <strong>the</strong> system<br />

being changed?<br />

Mr. Kappler:<br />

At <strong>the</strong> beginning of 2011, <strong>the</strong> decision was made<br />

to switch to <strong>DIVA</strong> 4, this <strong>at</strong> one of <strong>the</strong> first large<br />

transport authorities, th<strong>at</strong> also uses <strong>the</strong> full range<br />

of functionality of <strong>the</strong> classic <strong>DIVA</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a model. At<br />

first we agreed to start an intensive <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong>Web training program. As a result, all<br />

personnel were able to acquire <strong>the</strong> necessary<br />

know-how.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>3 has m<strong>at</strong>ured to become a stable, convenient<br />

<strong>and</strong> fast module. The change to a completely<br />

new system with all of its up <strong>and</strong> downs has<br />

not been <strong>the</strong> easiest of decisions, mainly because<br />

we would like to see improvement to <strong>the</strong> speed<br />

<strong>and</strong> ergonomics of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4.<br />

Mr. Torlach:<br />

The changes are more minor for GIS <strong>and</strong> cartography.<br />

The user interfaces in <strong>DIVA</strong>Geo have largely<br />

remained <strong>the</strong> same, however <strong>the</strong>re have been a<br />

few surprises in practical usage, for instance when<br />

displaying stop points on map products. In this<br />

way, improvements could be made in very different<br />

parts of <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 System using a map display.<br />

mdv <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> have been working with<br />

intensive collabor<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>the</strong> past half year. The<br />

goal was to implement <strong>the</strong> entire range of services,<br />

which <strong>DIVA</strong>3 controlled, for <strong>DIVA</strong> 4. Now<br />

we would like to concentr<strong>at</strong>e on <strong>the</strong> strengths<br />

<strong>and</strong> opportunities th<strong>at</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 has to offer. The<br />

first working group for <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 will be in February,<br />

which <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> extends an invit<strong>at</strong>ion. The<br />

coordin<strong>at</strong>ion of both <strong>the</strong> divergent <strong>and</strong> common<br />

interests of our customers will play a<br />

large role in <strong>the</strong> group. Wh<strong>at</strong> expect<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

<strong>and</strong> goals does <strong>the</strong> <strong>VVS</strong> have in this working<br />

group?<br />

Mr. Kappler:<br />

First of all, we would like to take this opportunity<br />

to thank <strong>the</strong> mdv support team <strong>and</strong> developers,<br />

with which we have close collabor<strong>at</strong>ion. mdv<br />

employees have been extremely helpful when<br />

dealing with known errors or in putting workarounds<br />

in place for <strong>the</strong> more exceptional cases.<br />

Regular st<strong>at</strong>us talks have also been helpful, especially<br />

in <strong>the</strong> “critical phase” in which Dr. Mentz also<br />

took part. We would also like to extend our gr<strong>at</strong>itude<br />

to him for his involvement.<br />

We proposed <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 working group a while<br />

back <strong>and</strong> are pleased th<strong>at</strong> it has now been cre<strong>at</strong>ed.<br />

We are looking forward to sharing our experiences<br />

with o<strong>the</strong>r system users, which will integr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

<strong>the</strong> wishes <strong>and</strong> requirements of users into<br />

<strong>the</strong> fur<strong>the</strong>r development of <strong>the</strong> system, similar to<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> working group.<br />

mdv news II/2011 - 9<br />

The <strong>VVS</strong> is using a wide range of services in <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4 system. There is somewh<strong>at</strong> of a tradition<br />

of employees becoming engaged in <strong>the</strong><br />

development of <strong>the</strong> system by submitting<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive proposals. A good example from<br />

<strong>the</strong> current <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 implement<strong>at</strong>ion is <strong>the</strong> overview<br />

of route version validities, which was<br />

developed <strong>and</strong> implemented based on <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

suggestions. It is important to have a say in<br />

<strong>the</strong> requirements of our customers. <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 is a<br />

system th<strong>at</strong> will be under constant development.<br />

Which development direction is particularly<br />

interesting to you?<br />

Mr. Kappler:<br />

We would like to continue to enjoy close collabor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

regarding product development. Challenges<br />

<strong>and</strong> new requirements usually arise during<br />

production <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n must be resolved as quickly<br />

as possible. For future releases, we would like to<br />

see faster workflows <strong>and</strong> improvements to <strong>the</strong><br />

ergonomics of <strong>the</strong> system. With Release 4.1.7, we<br />

plan to start productively using modules Vehicle<br />

Schedule <strong>and</strong> Oper<strong>at</strong>ional St<strong>at</strong>istics.<br />

Mr. Torlach:<br />

With <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong><strong>10</strong> we now have products in<br />

use th<strong>at</strong> are being dynamically developed. We<br />

expect to be able to give technically advanced, upto-<strong>the</strong>-minute<br />

responses to <strong>the</strong> changing<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>s in timetable management <strong>and</strong> passenger<br />

inform<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

The <strong>VVS</strong> would like to begin using <strong>the</strong> Web Fe<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

Service (WFS) as soon as possible. In doing so, <strong>the</strong><br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>and</strong> partners of our associ<strong>at</strong>ion will<br />

have access to selected d<strong>at</strong>a.<br />

Mr. Kappler <strong>and</strong> Mr. Torlach, thank you for<br />

your time.

<strong>10</strong> mdv news II/2011<br />

AVM <strong>and</strong> Vehicle Scheduling Light <strong>at</strong> VRN<br />

Project<br />

Earlier this year <strong>the</strong> Rhein-Neckar transport authority<br />

announced an intern<strong>at</strong>ional request for<br />

proposal for <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion of a regional AVM. The<br />

requirement was a client-capable AVM, which<br />

would allow for <strong>the</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ion of multiple<br />

small to mid-sized bus companies in <strong>the</strong> VRN<br />

region. Also salient to <strong>the</strong> project was <strong>the</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of real-time inform<strong>at</strong>ion for <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

planner <strong>and</strong> connection guarantees, <strong>the</strong> l<strong>at</strong>ter<br />

of which needed to work with both AVM internally<br />

<strong>and</strong> AVM externally (with third-party AVM<br />

systems).<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> existing vehicle equipment varies<br />

gre<strong>at</strong>ly from oper<strong>at</strong>or to oper<strong>at</strong>or, from <strong>the</strong><br />

non-existent to modern AVM-capable ticket<br />

printers, <strong>the</strong> AVM system required by <strong>the</strong> VRN<br />

had to be quite flexible. The AVM system would<br />

need to both communic<strong>at</strong>e with diverse existing<br />

systems <strong>and</strong> also provide vehicle equipment,<br />

if necessary.<br />

The real-time inform<strong>at</strong>ion collected by <strong>the</strong> AVM<br />

would <strong>the</strong>n flow via <strong>the</strong> VRN d<strong>at</strong>a pl<strong>at</strong>form (still<br />

in planning) to <strong>the</strong> journey planner <strong>and</strong> also to<br />

third-parties to guarantee connections <strong>and</strong><br />

provide passenger inform<strong>at</strong>ion to st<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r requirement first became apparent<br />

during <strong>the</strong> specific<strong>at</strong>ion phase in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

with future AVM clients. The proposal was for<br />

an AVM th<strong>at</strong> would work with block inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

for <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>or <strong>and</strong> th<strong>at</strong> would calcul<strong>at</strong>e<br />

real-time inform<strong>at</strong>ion. As can be expected,<br />

smaller clients often do not have <strong>the</strong>ir d<strong>at</strong>a in<br />

electronic form, or it is in a form th<strong>at</strong> cannot be<br />

read over a st<strong>and</strong>ardized interface.<br />

As a consequence, a fast <strong>and</strong> convenient way<br />

had to be developed to collect <strong>the</strong> block inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of smaller clients for use in <strong>the</strong> AVM system.<br />

AVM Light<br />

mdv entered <strong>the</strong> request for proposal with <strong>the</strong><br />

AVM th<strong>at</strong> was described in <strong>the</strong> last issue of mdv<br />

news <strong>and</strong> was successful. After <strong>the</strong> specific<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

phase in spring, development hit full stride<br />

during <strong>the</strong> summer. In contrast to <strong>the</strong> first version<br />

th<strong>at</strong> was installed in <strong>the</strong> Vogtl<strong>and</strong> Region,<br />

a number of enhancements <strong>and</strong> improvements<br />

were included in <strong>the</strong> newer version. While <strong>the</strong><br />

first version of <strong>the</strong> AVM was still partly supplied<br />

by partners, <strong>the</strong> second version was developed<br />

solely <strong>at</strong> mdv.<br />

As described above, one of <strong>the</strong> requirements for<br />

<strong>the</strong> VRN AVM was <strong>the</strong> particip<strong>at</strong>ion of multiple<br />

transport authorities. For this reason, <strong>the</strong> AVM<br />

was developed to become a client-capable system.<br />

It is now possible to have an instance of<br />

<strong>the</strong> background system simultaneously used by<br />

different oper<strong>at</strong>ors without <strong>the</strong>m being able to<br />

see each o<strong>the</strong>r’s d<strong>at</strong>a. Using rights management,<br />

<strong>the</strong> functions <strong>and</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a accessible to each<br />

user can be separ<strong>at</strong>ely defined. Functions rights<br />

are set similarly to <strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 roles, with each<br />

system function defined for user’s ability to<br />

read, write <strong>and</strong> delete. Also parallel to <strong>DIVA</strong> 4,<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a rights are defined in groups where rights<br />

administr<strong>at</strong>ors can determine, up to <strong>the</strong> level of<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ing branch, which d<strong>at</strong>a can be read. A<br />

user can be assigned to one or more roles <strong>and</strong><br />

groups. This provides <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>or with <strong>the</strong> flexibility<br />

needed to depict <strong>the</strong> range of constell<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

th<strong>at</strong> happen in <strong>the</strong> real world.<br />

The second major innov<strong>at</strong>ion is <strong>the</strong> completely<br />

refashioned driver terminal. While <strong>the</strong> Vogtl<strong>and</strong><br />

version still had a pl<strong>at</strong>form-independent<br />

browser applic<strong>at</strong>ion, <strong>the</strong> new driver terminal is<br />

an Android-based app. In this way pl<strong>at</strong>formindependency<br />

was traded for a solution to a<br />

few issues th<strong>at</strong> are caused by a browser. At <strong>the</strong><br />

same time, a few functions were first possible<br />

because of app technology, which could not be<br />

implemented in a pure browser applic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Use in Vogtl<strong>and</strong> has shown th<strong>at</strong> network coverage<br />

in parts of <strong>the</strong> countryside does not reach<br />

<strong>the</strong> lowest st<strong>and</strong>ard called “EDGE”. A pure<br />

browser applic<strong>at</strong>ion would obviously not be<br />

possible in places with no network, <strong>and</strong> drivers<br />

could not sign on to a new trip <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong><br />

first. In this type of situ<strong>at</strong>ion, an app is much<br />

more tolerant. Even when <strong>the</strong> app cannot<br />

directly transfer <strong>the</strong> sign on d<strong>at</strong>a, it can still save<br />

<strong>the</strong> inform<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>n send it in <strong>the</strong> background<br />

as soon as reception is available again.<br />

One example of a new function made possible<br />

with <strong>the</strong> app is access to <strong>the</strong> telephone infrastructure,<br />

where acoustic signals can be sent. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> future, it will be possible to access USB- <strong>and</strong><br />

Bluetooth interfaces on third-party devices like<br />

ticket machines or vehicle displays.<br />

An innov<strong>at</strong>ion th<strong>at</strong> is invisible to control center<br />

staff <strong>and</strong> drivers is <strong>the</strong> powerful administr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

environment. This allows AVM oper<strong>at</strong>ors <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to manage d<strong>at</strong>a in <strong>the</strong> AVM <strong>and</strong> have<br />

insight into <strong>the</strong> internal processing. Planned<br />

timetable d<strong>at</strong>a can be loaded in VDV 452 <strong>and</strong><br />

TransXchange form<strong>at</strong>s or directly from <strong>EFA</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a<br />

into <strong>the</strong> AVM. O<strong>the</strong>r d<strong>at</strong>a for which <strong>the</strong>re is no<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ardized exchange form<strong>at</strong>, like vehicle <strong>and</strong><br />

driver lists, can ei<strong>the</strong>r be entered in <strong>the</strong> AVM or<br />

imported as CSV files. When in use, <strong>the</strong> processes<br />

to determine logical vehicle position <strong>and</strong><br />

forecasts can be displayed through <strong>the</strong> administr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

interface both in graphic <strong>and</strong> tabular<br />

form.<br />

AVM Light is currently in testing with Stadtwerke<br />

Eberbach vehicles equipped with mdv<br />

software. The testing phase is planned to successfully<br />

end in December.<br />

Integr<strong>at</strong>ion of on-board third-party devices into<br />

<strong>the</strong> AVM is still ongoing, particularly by <strong>the</strong><br />

manufacturer of on-board devices to bring <strong>the</strong><br />

interfaces up to a common st<strong>and</strong>ard. As soon<br />

as <strong>the</strong>re is something new to report we will be<br />

sure to tell you in a future issue of mdv news.<br />

Vehicle Scheduling Light<br />

Vehicle scheduling in <strong>DIVA</strong> is nothing new; it<br />

has been a part of previous versions since <strong>the</strong><br />

introduction of <strong>the</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ional d<strong>at</strong>a model. In<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 3 <strong>and</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> 4, classic vehicle scheduling<br />

was done in <strong>the</strong> graphic schedule, a powerful<br />

tool th<strong>at</strong> supports schedulers when planning<br />

vehicle blocks. For smaller oper<strong>at</strong>ors with between<br />

one <strong>and</strong> twenty buses, vehicle scheduling<br />

may not even be required to this degree. Their<br />

blocks are often so simple th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y can be<br />

managed in normal office software like Excel or<br />

may be set by <strong>the</strong> contractor <strong>the</strong>mselves. In this<br />

case <strong>the</strong> existing blocks, which are not in<br />

machine readable form<strong>at</strong>, have to be entered<br />

into <strong>DIVA</strong> in a simple form<strong>at</strong> <strong>and</strong> transferred to<br />

<strong>the</strong> AVM system. Technically this procedure<br />

could be done in <strong>the</strong> graphic schedule module,<br />

but doing so would be like hunting sparrows<br />

with a canon. To avoid overkill, we have developed<br />

an extension in <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule th<strong>at</strong> deals<br />

with this frequently occurring situ<strong>at</strong>ion. Using<br />

drag <strong>and</strong> drop, trips can be assigned to blocks<br />

from route group containers (see figure 1).<br />

Because <strong>the</strong> day types of <strong>the</strong> authority routes<br />

often differ from <strong>the</strong> vehicle schedule day<br />

types, meaning th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is a timetable for<br />

Mon-Fri, but different shift schedules for each<br />

day, <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 enables a route group to be assigned<br />

to several day types within <strong>the</strong> block. So for<br />

each block day type, independent blocks can<br />

be combined from one <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same timetable<br />

in <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule. In this way <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule<br />

supports <strong>the</strong> scheduling process with diverse<br />

editing functions like <strong>the</strong> ability to copy a block<br />

to ano<strong>the</strong>r day type.<br />

Also missing from most authority d<strong>at</strong>a are <strong>the</strong><br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ional trips or “empty trips”, like a bus trip<br />

without passengers from <strong>the</strong> end of one pro-

ductive trip to <strong>the</strong> start of ano<strong>the</strong>r. These types<br />

of trips are required in AVM for two reasons:<br />

firstly, to determine <strong>the</strong> loc<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>the</strong> vehicle<br />

for positioning purposes all along its route <strong>and</strong><br />

secondly, more importantly for users, to accur<strong>at</strong>ely<br />

calcul<strong>at</strong>e <strong>the</strong> consequences of delays on<br />

subsequent trips. Empty trips can be entered<br />

similarly to productive trips. IDs <strong>and</strong> intended<br />

use can be used to indic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> empty trips are<br />

not to be displayed in print products <strong>and</strong> journey<br />

planner.<br />

Summary <strong>and</strong> Outlook<br />

As a result of developing an independent AVM<br />

system, mdv is able to provide <strong>the</strong> entire supply<br />

chain of real-time passenger inform<strong>at</strong>ion. This<br />

stretches from d<strong>at</strong>a collection in vehicles to <strong>the</strong><br />

display of forecasts in <strong>the</strong> internet or on mobile<br />

devices. The benefits for customers are quite<br />

clear: <strong>the</strong> complex <strong>and</strong> cumbersome interface<br />

adjustments between separ<strong>at</strong>e suppliers are<br />

avoided for real-time projects. So for regular<br />

oper<strong>at</strong>ions <strong>the</strong>re is only one contact for <strong>the</strong><br />

entire system. Finally, customers also save<br />

through synergy effects between <strong>the</strong> individual<br />

software components in development <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ir support.<br />

mdv AVM is an upgradable <strong>and</strong> customizable<br />

product. The approach of using off-<strong>the</strong>-shelf<br />

smart phone technology helps ensure th<strong>at</strong> continued<br />

development in <strong>the</strong> area will benefit<br />

from <strong>the</strong> lower costs for vehicles <strong>and</strong> equipment.<br />

USB <strong>and</strong> Bluetooth interfaces open <strong>the</strong><br />

door to <strong>the</strong> enhancement of a full range of<br />

functions coupled with o<strong>the</strong>r on-board devices.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> on <strong>the</strong> W<strong>at</strong>erfront<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> system users met for <strong>the</strong> 49th user<br />

group in Bremerhaven, Germany.<br />

Sunshine <strong>and</strong> strong winds greeted <strong>the</strong> 79 participants<br />

from Germany, Austria <strong>and</strong> Switzerl<strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> 49th user group in <strong>the</strong> ATLANTC<br />

Hotel Sail City.<br />

The venue provided a professional background<br />

for this ‘oper<strong>at</strong>ions’ user group, with its <strong>at</strong>tached<br />

conference center wonderfully loc<strong>at</strong>ed near <strong>the</strong><br />

‘Hafenwelten’ directly <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Weser Delta.<br />

After arriving on Wednesday, participants met<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> get-toge<strong>the</strong>r on <strong>the</strong> bo<strong>at</strong> restaurant<br />

‘Seute Deern’ to e<strong>at</strong> fish specialties, drink local<br />

beer from <strong>the</strong> Bremen breweries <strong>and</strong> get<br />

acquainted (or reacquainted) with one ano<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

The Beck's ship, <strong>the</strong> ‘Alex<strong>and</strong>er von Humboldt’,<br />

sailed past <strong>the</strong> conference center window <strong>the</strong><br />

next day, adding to <strong>the</strong> welcome given by Mr.<br />

Robert Haase, <strong>the</strong> managing director of Bremerhaven<br />

AG. Mr. Haase also gave interesting<br />

insights into <strong>the</strong> structural changes in <strong>the</strong> city<br />

of Bremerhaven.<br />

The main focus of this user group was oper<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4. Dr. Mentz spoke in detail about <strong>the</strong><br />

release planning, gave a peak into <strong>the</strong> ‘inner<br />

workings’ of <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 development <strong>and</strong> explained<br />

<strong>the</strong> development <strong>and</strong> test environments as<br />

well as <strong>the</strong> str<strong>at</strong>egies <strong>at</strong> mdv.<br />

In subsequent talks, innov<strong>at</strong>ions in <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 were<br />

presented in detail. Every aspect of oper<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

planning from network planning to deployment<br />

was illumin<strong>at</strong>ed. Garnering particular<br />

interest were <strong>the</strong> topics of AVM Light <strong>and</strong><br />

‘simple’ vehicle scheduling with <strong>DIVA</strong> 4. Two<br />

highlights of this series of talks were <strong>the</strong> live<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>ions of <strong>the</strong> control center <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> VRN<br />

<strong>and</strong> insight into <strong>the</strong> deployment work in Abu<br />

Dhabi.<br />

Present<strong>at</strong>ions were also made about <strong>DIVA</strong><br />

Publisher <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> <strong>10</strong>, giving participants <strong>the</strong><br />

l<strong>at</strong>est developments regarding mdv passenger<br />

inform<strong>at</strong>ion products <strong>and</strong> newest version of<br />

<strong>EFA</strong>.<br />

The final group of talks addressed <strong>the</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a pl<strong>at</strong>form<br />

(DDIP) <strong>and</strong> work with Oracle as a d<strong>at</strong>abase<br />

system.<br />

All work <strong>and</strong> no play makes Jack a dull boy. So<br />

when participants took a tour through <strong>the</strong> Bremerhaven<br />

Clim<strong>at</strong>e House, <strong>the</strong>y joined an exciting<br />

journey along <strong>the</strong> eighth longitude. The 90<br />

minute trip started in Bremerhaven <strong>and</strong> led<br />

over Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, through <strong>the</strong> desert <strong>and</strong> rainforest,<br />

all <strong>the</strong> way around <strong>the</strong> globe so th<strong>at</strong> participants<br />

could feel <strong>the</strong> effects of changing clim<strong>at</strong>es<br />

first-h<strong>and</strong>.<br />

A magnificent dinner in <strong>the</strong> captain‘s lounge of<br />

<strong>the</strong> Atlantic Hotel enriched <strong>the</strong> experience <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> successful conference was topped off by a<br />

spectacular view of <strong>the</strong> port.<br />

We look forward to <strong>the</strong> 50th user group in<br />

Munich.<br />

After paying close <strong>at</strong>tention...<br />

<strong>and</strong> talking shot in <strong>the</strong> coffee breaks...<br />

participants could relax <strong>and</strong> enjoy <strong>the</strong> view from above <strong>the</strong> port<br />

Mr. Robert Haase, Managing Director of Bremerhaven<br />

AG, spoke about <strong>the</strong> structural changes in<br />

Bremerhaven

Stuttgart Tram Strike<br />

Strike - no busses <strong>and</strong> no trams today<br />

Perplexed <strong>and</strong> frustr<strong>at</strong>ed passengers <strong>at</strong> bus<br />

stops <strong>and</strong> increased, traffic-causing individual<br />

transport are <strong>the</strong> telltale signs for an event th<strong>at</strong><br />

upsets public transport schedules. For <strong>EFA</strong>,<br />

which normally works in <strong>the</strong> background, such<br />

an event represents an opportunity to show<br />

wh<strong>at</strong> it can do.<br />

On Tuesday 25 October 2011, <strong>the</strong> Stuttgart<br />

newspaper wrote:<br />

Strike will paralyze Stuttgart on Friday<br />

Stuttgart - Taxi, bike or scooter: one hundred<br />

thous<strong>and</strong> Stuttgart commuters have to get cre<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

if <strong>the</strong>y want to get to work on Friday. This is<br />

because Union Verdi will go on strike so th<strong>at</strong><br />

thous<strong>and</strong>s of buses <strong>and</strong> rail will not be used for<br />

public transport in Stuttgart, thus paralyzing <strong>the</strong><br />

city.<br />

<strong>EFA</strong> to <strong>the</strong> rescue<br />

The <strong>VVS</strong> (Stuttgart Transit <strong>and</strong> Tariff Associ<strong>at</strong>ion)<br />

entered every incident in <strong>the</strong> ICS (Incident<br />

Capturing System) (Figure 1) <strong>and</strong> informed its<br />

customers through every channel:<br />

- The central display <strong>at</strong> stop “Feuersee”<br />

(Figure 2)<br />

- The departure board <strong>at</strong> “Herderpl<strong>at</strong>z”<br />

(Figure 3)<br />

- Inform<strong>at</strong>ion sent to subscribers via email<br />

<strong>and</strong> SMS (Figure 4)<br />

<strong>EFA</strong> provides altern<strong>at</strong>ives<br />

At least parts of journeys can be made with longer<br />

walks <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> suburban rail (s. Abb. 5) <strong>EFA</strong><br />

even calcul<strong>at</strong>es <strong>and</strong> provides journeys with<br />

cycle legs.<br />

Conclusion<br />

Even during a strike, <strong>EFA</strong>,<br />

aided by a well-managed<br />

CMS, showed once<br />

again th<strong>at</strong> it is able to<br />

minimize <strong>the</strong> inconveniences<br />

of a major event<br />

for passengers of public<br />

transport systems.<br />

Network Map <strong>and</strong> Route Option Maps <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> VMS<br />

Transport Authority of Middle Saxony<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> past few years, <strong>the</strong> cre<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

cartography from GIS d<strong>at</strong>a (Geographic<br />

Inform<strong>at</strong>ion System D<strong>at</strong>a) has become<br />

more important <strong>at</strong> transport authorities<br />

<strong>and</strong> companies. The first article about ‘<strong>VVS</strong><br />

cartography directly from <strong>DIVA</strong>’ appeared<br />

in mdv news I/2005.<br />

A number of transport authorities use<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> modules Map Server <strong>and</strong> Map<br />

Requester to gener<strong>at</strong>e route network<br />

maps, city map sections <strong>and</strong> route option<br />

maps. Ano<strong>the</strong>r module, <strong>the</strong> Map Tiler, calcul<strong>at</strong>es<br />

tiles to be able to display interactive<br />

maps in various zoom levels. All<br />

three were used for <strong>DIVA</strong> 3 <strong>and</strong> have had<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir technology transferred one-to-one to<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> 4.<br />

".... manually cre<strong>at</strong>ing high-quality inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

media has largely been replaced by<br />

autom<strong>at</strong>ic processes. The result not only<br />

saves time <strong>and</strong> energy but also provides <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to have up-to-d<strong>at</strong>e inform<strong>at</strong>ion by<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>se products into <strong>the</strong> journey<br />

planner." (quote from mdv news I/2005, article<br />

"<strong>VVS</strong> cartography directly from <strong>DIVA</strong>, Mr.<br />

Torlach)<br />

The p<strong>at</strong>h from upd<strong>at</strong>ed GIS (<strong>DIVA</strong> Geo) <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> d<strong>at</strong>a to a gener<strong>at</strong>ed map goes from<br />

determining <strong>the</strong> sections of <strong>the</strong> areas in<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong>Geo to configuring <strong>the</strong> many parameters<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Map Server. These parameters<br />

enable area-, route-, <strong>and</strong> point objects to<br />

be displayed on a map according to means<br />

of transport using character sets <strong>and</strong><br />

stops, which include links of routes.<br />

The VMS set <strong>the</strong> goal to be able to gener<strong>at</strong>e<br />

both route network maps a network<br />

map using <strong>DIVA</strong>. In doing so <strong>the</strong>y hoped to<br />

save costs <strong>and</strong> gener<strong>at</strong>e up-to-d<strong>at</strong>e maps<br />

for timetable books as well as for<br />

download from <strong>the</strong> internet.<br />

At first, <strong>the</strong> GIS d<strong>at</strong>a was enhanced to<br />

include fare zone areas, zoom frames, <strong>and</strong><br />

locality names for <strong>the</strong> route network maps,<br />

POIs (points of interest) <strong>and</strong> a few o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

objects.<br />

Afterwards comprehensive parametriz<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

occurred for all GIS objects, stops <strong>and</strong><br />

links. Now <strong>the</strong>re are more than 50,000<br />

parameter settings, all of which were first<br />

tested in small sections <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> used on<br />

<strong>the</strong> entire map. The advantage of having<br />

one’s own maps in comparison to ‘drawing’<br />

on exiting maps is th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> contents can<br />

be precisely displayed in accordance with<br />

<strong>the</strong> message of <strong>the</strong> map, which is public<br />

transport on <strong>the</strong> background of settlement<br />

structures. The symbols <strong>and</strong> colors of<br />

<strong>the</strong> background map can be selected so<br />

th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> public transport appears in <strong>the</strong><br />

foreground.<br />

The product with <strong>the</strong> largest area is <strong>the</strong><br />

transport authority’s route network map.<br />

This makes both <strong>the</strong> map <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> locality<br />

index important. There is also a grid over<br />

<strong>the</strong> map th<strong>at</strong> makes it easier to find individual<br />

localities (see figure 1, page 15).<br />

In addition to <strong>the</strong> network map, 23 route<br />

network maps were printed for <strong>the</strong> larger<br />

cities as a supplement to <strong>the</strong> timetable<br />

books (see figure 2, S.15). Every map can<br />

also be accessed via www.vms.de -> VMS<br />

timetable -> network maps (see figure 3,<br />

page 15).<br />

The VMS required a series of enhancements<br />

th<strong>at</strong> will be described in detail<br />

below:<br />

A specialty of <strong>the</strong> network map is <strong>the</strong><br />

option to display fare zones. By means of<br />

an intelligent, autom<strong>at</strong>ic coloring procedure,<br />

settings can be made so th<strong>at</strong><br />

neighboring areas do not receive <strong>the</strong> same<br />

color. In addition, overlapping fare zones<br />

are shaded<br />

with both<br />

colors of <strong>the</strong><br />

respective<br />

zones. The<br />

appearance of<br />

<strong>the</strong> shading<br />

can be customizedaccording<br />

to width<br />

<strong>and</strong> angle (see<br />

Figure 4: Fare zones<br />

figure 4).<br />

The network map has a zoom frame with<br />

city fare zones which indic<strong>at</strong>e th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are route network maps in larger scales for<br />

specific areas of <strong>the</strong> city. Stops are not<br />

labeled inside <strong>the</strong> zoom frame (see figure 5).<br />

Figure 5: Zoom frame<br />

In <strong>the</strong> network map, <strong>the</strong> lines th<strong>at</strong> lead out<br />

of <strong>the</strong> transport authority are displayed<br />

with an arrow<br />

<strong>and</strong> direction<br />

label. Because<br />

<strong>the</strong> direction of<br />

<strong>the</strong> arrow cannot<br />

be indic<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

using links, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

have to be defined<br />

by a bracket<br />

Figure 6:<br />

Routes th<strong>at</strong> spill off of <strong>the</strong> map<br />

in a point object<br />

in <strong>the</strong> GIS (see<br />

figure 6).<br />

There are many optimiz<strong>at</strong>ion functions to<br />

label destin<strong>at</strong>ion stops in <strong>DIVA</strong> programs,<br />

stop labeling<br />

specially for network<br />

maps,<br />

street labels,<br />

display of combin<strong>at</strong>ionsymbols<br />

<strong>and</strong> route<br />

displacement of<br />

different means<br />

of transport (see<br />

Figure 7: Combin<strong>at</strong>ion symbols figure 7).<br />

Only specific stops can be labeled in <strong>the</strong><br />

network maps. The display sequence of<br />

destin<strong>at</strong>ion stop<br />

boxes <strong>at</strong> stops<br />

can be set hierarchicallyaccording<br />

to means of<br />

transport. The<br />

labeling of destin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

stops in<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ion to destin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

stop<br />

Figure 8:<br />

Rail boxes<br />

Figure 9:<br />

Rail line display<br />

boxes can also<br />

be customized<br />

(see figure 8).<br />

The boxes <strong>at</strong> rail st<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

are dynamic, which<br />

means th<strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong>y turn in<br />

<strong>the</strong> direction of <strong>the</strong> link<br />

of <strong>the</strong> rail line without<br />

displaying <strong>the</strong> links. Instead,<br />

<strong>the</strong> rail lines are<br />

displayed from <strong>the</strong> GIS<br />

(see figure 9).

The route network maps have street inde-<br />

in <strong>the</strong> various districts.<br />

Street indexes of a route network map can<br />

be output in a text file. In this way an<br />

entire street index can also be printed.<br />

Street labels have been optimized so th<strong>at</strong><br />

even abbrevi<strong>at</strong>i-<br />

ons of <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

names are still<br />

recognizable <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> labels are<br />

optimally placed<br />

(with line break,<br />

over, in <strong>the</strong><br />

middle of <strong>and</strong><br />

under <strong>the</strong> street)<br />

(see figure <strong>10</strong>).<br />

If <strong>the</strong> street name cannot be placed on <strong>the</strong><br />

map, <strong>the</strong>n street name blocks are dis-<br />

played, which can also be configured (see<br />

figure 11).<br />

All in all <strong>the</strong>re has been a long line of close<br />

collabor<strong>at</strong>ion between <strong>the</strong> VMS <strong>and</strong> mdv<br />

until all details were resolved to <strong>the</strong> stan-<br />

dards set by <strong>the</strong> VMS. The VMS was happy<br />

when <strong>the</strong> maps went to print.<br />

News in Brief<br />

Central D<strong>at</strong>a Pl<strong>at</strong>form for<br />

Real-time D<strong>at</strong>a (NVBW)<br />

The NVBW (Transport Authority<br />

of Baden-Württemberg)<br />

has contracted mdv to cre<strong>at</strong>e a<br />

st<strong>at</strong>e-wide central d<strong>at</strong>a pl<strong>at</strong>form<br />

for real-time d<strong>at</strong>a from all over Baden-<br />

Württemberg <strong>and</strong> its neighboring regions. In a<br />

first phase, local rail d<strong>at</strong>a will be integr<strong>at</strong>ed into<br />

<strong>the</strong> SSB. This inform<strong>at</strong>ion will also be fed into<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>EFA</strong>-BW journey planner, where it will be<br />

used for real-time journey planning. The basis<br />

for <strong>the</strong> journey planner is <strong>the</strong> ongoing conversion<br />

of NVBW-systems to <strong>DIVA</strong> 4 <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> <strong>10</strong>. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> future o<strong>the</strong>r d<strong>at</strong>a suppliers <strong>and</strong> recipients<br />

will be added to <strong>the</strong> central d<strong>at</strong>a pl<strong>at</strong>form.<br />

External Audit <strong>at</strong> mdv<br />

An external audit was conducted from 27 - 29<br />

September 2011 in which mdv was positively<br />

r<strong>at</strong>ed, resulting in an ISO 9001:2008 certific<strong>at</strong>e<br />

for an additional 3 years. Once again, mdv’s dayto-day<br />

diligence regarding quality management<br />

was rewarded in <strong>the</strong> annual evalu<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

made by <strong>the</strong> TUV Rheinl<strong>and</strong> Group.<br />

The newest audit reaffirms mdv’s commitment<br />

to <strong>the</strong> company’s quality management policy,<br />

which emphasizes <strong>the</strong> sustainability of mdv<br />

products <strong>and</strong> services <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> transparency of<br />

internal <strong>and</strong> external processes.<br />

mdv in UK<br />

We are pleased to have a<br />

growing number of customers<br />

in Engl<strong>and</strong>, who we<br />

aim to assist with customized<br />

development <strong>and</strong> quality<br />

support. So on July 6th,<br />

we founded <strong>the</strong> newest mdv<br />

subsidiary under <strong>the</strong> name<br />

mdv software for public transport LTD. Our new<br />

office is loc<strong>at</strong>ed in <strong>the</strong> coastal town of Ipswich,<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>ast of London. We have begun to support<br />

customers in Engl<strong>and</strong> with <strong>the</strong> help of Ian<br />

Gray, our new English colleague. At <strong>the</strong> same<br />

time, resources have been freed up for o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

d<strong>at</strong>a services.<br />

<strong>EFA</strong> in Belfast<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Irel<strong>and</strong> has decided to plan journeys<br />

using <strong>EFA</strong>. The capital of Belfast has approx. 1.7<br />

million people which are actually citizens of <strong>the</strong><br />

United Kingdom of Gre<strong>at</strong> Britain. The tender<br />

was announced by ‘Translink’, which includes<br />

Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Irel<strong>and</strong> Railways (NIR), <strong>the</strong> Ulsterbus<br />

transport company <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Belfast City Metro.<br />

By awarding <strong>the</strong> journey planner to mdv, it is<br />

now possible to plan journeys throughout Irel<strong>and</strong><br />

(Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Irel<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Republic of Irel<strong>and</strong>).<br />

The decision was only made by <strong>the</strong> ‘N<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

Transport Authority of <strong>the</strong> Republic of Irel<strong>and</strong>’<br />

(NTA) to work with <strong>DIVA</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>EFA</strong> in <strong>the</strong><br />

summer of 2011.<br />

Mobile Apps for <strong>the</strong><br />

iPhone <strong>and</strong> Android<br />

in Sydney<br />

Transport Info, <strong>the</strong><br />

mdv timetable app<br />

for <strong>the</strong> iPhone <strong>and</strong><br />

Android for Sydney<br />

has recently been<br />

released, but has become quite<br />

popular within only a very short period of time.<br />

It is used by commuters <strong>and</strong> travelers. Transport<br />

Info is based on <strong>the</strong> same <strong>EFA</strong> system th<strong>at</strong> is<br />

used for <strong>the</strong> www.131500.com.au journey planner.<br />

The apps were officially announced by<br />

Transport for New South Wales (TfNSW):<br />

http://transport.nsw.gov.au/media-releases/customer-friendly-transport-inform<strong>at</strong>ion-now-available.<br />

The apps are part of TfNSW’s new concept for<br />

<strong>the</strong> 131500 system. All transport inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

are made available through multiple channels<br />

for <strong>the</strong> entire st<strong>at</strong>e of New South Wales from a<br />

central loc<strong>at</strong>ion. The inform<strong>at</strong>ion is consistent<br />

throughout due to <strong>the</strong> central approach <strong>and</strong><br />

also has <strong>the</strong> same good quality. Burt <strong>the</strong> iPhone<br />

/Android apps are only one of many channels.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> coming months, <strong>the</strong> goal is to exp<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

contents <strong>and</strong> functions of <strong>the</strong> entire 131500<br />

system.<br />

<strong>DIVA</strong> <strong>at</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cape of Good Hope<br />

Within <strong>the</strong> scope of a tender, <strong>the</strong> city authorities<br />

of Cape Town decided to institute<br />

<strong>the</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> Schedule Management System.<br />

The transport system in <strong>the</strong> picturesque<br />

city was aiming for a higher degree of professionaliz<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

which is set to be accomplished<br />

using both a vehicle control system<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>DIVA</strong> for oper<strong>at</strong>ional planning.<br />

The timetable <strong>and</strong> vehicle scheduling<br />

have already started being run with <strong>DIVA</strong>,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> AVM system is being used for <strong>the</strong><br />

first few routes. In <strong>the</strong> coming months, <strong>the</strong><br />

entire network will be integr<strong>at</strong>ed into <strong>the</strong><br />

planning process.<br />
