The rich soup which is public education…
Our Year 12 students sat the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS Test)
earlier this week. When these tests take place, you realise with a jolt that
the year is moving to an end too quickly.
My reflection was that our Year 12s now have 44 actual school days
left as State High students. In recognising that 44 school days is not
very many at all, I wondered what they were going to leave State High
with.
No doubt they will depart Vulture Street
with many good friends, some of whom
I hope will be lifelong mates for them.
We all trust that they will leave with a
door opened to a useful pathway for
their futures. For some, this represents a
job and for others University or TAFE.
I also know that they will leave with a
deep fondness and respect for their
school and an understanding that a
State High student never really leaves
State High. The school stays with them
and their mates in so many ways.
I also hope that they will leave State High
as advocates and protectors of public
education. Our system needs supporters
more than ever. The spread of rumour, myth and straight out misinformation about public education is a never
ending symptom of the fact that many people seem comfortable to hold strong opinions about something of
which they have no experience and no real knowledge.
Where else do students experience such rich diversity in terms of gender, race, cultural background, religion,
aspiration and values? What a priceless environment in which to have your beliefs challenged and tested.
Where else but in public education would this rich, diverse mix be thrown together and emerge as something
that thrives and works?
Above all else though, the proof is in the pudding. Our 2010 graduates will be the best evidence to the doubters
and cynics that public education is alive and well.
Semester 1 outcomes…
Another wonderful semester of achievement by State High Years 8, 9 and 10 students has been revealed by our
Semester 1 A to E data:
A B C D E
Year 8 34.8% 43.2% 18.1% 3.7% 0.3%
Year 9 37.8% 41.2% 16.3% 4.2% 0.5%
Year 10 33.3% 41.9% 20.0% 4.6% 0.2%
Please Note: Each percentage total represents the percentage of all grades at that particular level.
For example, ‘Year 8 A: 34.8%’ represents the fact that 34.8% of all the grades of Year 8 students for Semester 1 were at A Level.
This data indicates what happens when you mix a substantial dose of talent with hard work and commitment.
Congratulations students!
And finally…
Congratulations to the following groups of students for the recent achievements:
The Year 8 and Year 12 Senior A Debating Teams who participated in the Grand Final of Queensland Debating
on Wednesday, August 25.
The Year 8 team defeated Brisbane Girls Grammar School 3-0 and are premiers in the Year 8 division, our first
premiership in over 20 years.
The Year 12 Senior A team were defeated 3-2 by Brisbane Grammar School and are runners-up in this division,
our best result in this competition since 1992.
B.Arthur, our Debating Captain, was awarded “Best Speaker in the QDU Finals”, a prize that she richly
deserved.
A crowd of over 350 witnessed the Senior A debate – the State High contingent of supporters was certainly
the largest.
Well done to all concerned. This has been one of our most successful QDU debating seasons in the school’s
history.
On Saturday, August 21, our Bring It On Crew competed against 12 other crews and won the Bring It On Grand
Final at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Their commitment level was incredible – they practised every day - morning and afternoon - for months
leading up to the grand final and they choreographed the entire routine themselves.
Their tricks were outstanding and their commitment exemplified teamwork – working across grade levels.
Each of the students wore a wristband stating their reasons for dancing - some of which included for their
family, for their school, for freedom.
A number of people on the night said their performance was of international standard.
On Sunday, August 22, our Theatresports team won the Grand Final held at La Boite Theatre Company.
Theatresports is the art of improvisation which requires teams to be quick thinking to tell a story which
is entertaining and action-packed. Brisbane State High was the first State School ever to win this
competition. Well done to the Theatresports team and their coach, Ms R. Dorge.
At the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod held on the weekend of August 21 and 22 at Kelvin Grove State
College, the following wonderful results were achieved by our Percussion Ensembles:
• Senior Percussion Ensemble – 2nd place in Senior Ensemble section.
• Junior Percussion Ensemble – 2nd in Junior High Ensemble section.
• Year 8 Percussion Ensemble – 3rd in Junior High Ensemble section.
• Senior Percussion Ensemble – 2nd in Novelty Section (playing on rubbish bins).
Student Voice
Year 8: Starting out
Mr Richard Morrison, Executive Principal
The State High Spirit
It started as just a phrase mentioned constantly on Assembly: “The State High Spirit”. Yet we can truthfully
say that we didn’t understand the full meaning. We heard it and we rolled our eyes, until we saw and
experienced it first hand. That was when we realised that this ‘spirit’ really did exist, and really did make a
difference in our school. Although State High is made up of unique individuals, we are strongest when we
band together as a school, to support what may be one individual, one team, or one cause.
The State High Spirit has been prominent in various community events; Shave for a Cure, State High Beats,
The Cans Appeal, Bring It On performances, the Music and International Food Festival, and many sporting
events. None of these events would have happened if it wasn’t for the support of all State High students.
And now, we are able to tell those who are a part of this Spirit exactly what it means for those they are
supporting.
Recently, when our debating team reached the grand final, we were expecting to be facing a crowd of
unfamiliar faces who were there to support our opposition. So, to stand up and see that there were familiar
faces, and new ones, all supporting US, really made a difference to the way we performed. It became so
much easier, and so much better, to know that the people watching you were not baiting their breath and
waiting for you to make a mistake, but to watch you win a final. And when the result was announced, and
our names called out for our win, this support came in the form of a standing ovation, from a combination
of teachers, friends, peers, prefects, and the State High Griffin.
So, yes, at the start of the year, we didn’t know what ‘The State High Spirit’ was all about. We had absolutely
no idea. But now, after three terms of seeing it in action, we have come to realise that it is this spirit which
makes State High the amazing school it is today.
Gracious in victory
Recently a parent of a Brisbane State High School student was approached by a member of the Gregory
Terrace community who had a son play in their First XV for 2010. From the conversation exchanged two
significant points were raised.
The first was an earnest compliment for the State High hospitality after the game which is a well deserved
acknowledgment to all involved.
The second, more importantly, was towards the attitude of the First Rugby Team and particularly how
gracious they were in victory. These comments were reiterated several times by the parent who asked
that they be passed on to me.
I am sure this is just a small example of the range of praise and positive feedback received at our school,
yet it has made me consider how even small acts by students can have a strong and positive impact on
the reputation of our school for the wider community. As students we all have the responsibility for the
school’s reputation and to ensure our school is perceived as a great example of education as it should
be.
While I have this chance I would also like to congratulate those who in the past weeks have attained
high achievements in their varying fields.
This includes the ‘Bring It On‘ Dance Crew, the Theatre Sports team, both the Senior A and Year 8
Debating teams, the Senior and Junior Dance Troupes and the Boys and Girls First XI Football teams.
Congratulations to all.
2010 Peter & Julie Bellas Sydney Biennale Trip
Our three bursary winners, R.Mulligan, A.Oh and X Tang, travelled to Sydney in late July to experience
the 17th Sydney Biennale. The theme of the Biennale was ‘The Beauty of Distance: Songs of Survival in
a Precarious Age’ and consisted of artworks from 166 artists from 36 countries. The event was staged
over several venues including Cockatoo Island, a site that has been profoundly shaped by a dark and
somewhat sinister past.
The exhibition included works about:
• The survival of traditional cultures that have been persecuted and marginalised.
• Reflecting that there’s more to life than rationality and science.
• The past and present are linked.
Science Week , State High teachers and students with
local primary school students having a day of hands on science fun.
• Documentary work that depict the current state of the world and works that employ tricksterism
to make a serious point.
Along with some very serious art observing, the three days were filled with site seeing, some great food
(Neil Perry’s Rockpool Bar & Grill) and of course a little shopping.
work from the workshops will be
displayed as part of the 21st Century: Art
in the First Decade exhibition opening
Armando Andrade Tudela (Peru), Sharif Waked (Palestine) and Yang Fudong (China).
An important component of the exhibition will be a series of projects developed by the Gallery’s
Children’s Art Centre (CAC) in collaboration with exhibiting artists. The CAC is a dedicated exhibition
space within the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and is focused on presenting contemporary art in ways
that are appealing and engaging for children and their families.
The exhibitions and programs offer children a gallery experience that is enriching and insightful with
hands-on activities developed to engage young minds with the ideas and processes surrounding
contemporary art.
We are extremely excited about this wonderful opportunity that has been extended to our students.
ICAS Computer Skills Competition
Earlier this year we had a small but very
keen group of students participate the ICAS
Computer Skills Competition. This competition
is only available to students from Years 8 - 10
and is offered on an annual basis much like
the Westpac Maths Competition and many
others.
This year we had 25 students participate, all of
which achieved outstanding results indicating
they were far above the national average.
All students attained a credit, distinction or
high distinction.
Special congratulations must go to the
following students who attained high
distinctions meaning that they were placed
within the top 1% of all students participating
in Queensland:
K.Kaluarachci, S.Khoupongsy, L.McBride-Kelly, Y.Shen, M.Crichton, M.Dinon and J.GOldizen.
One-to-One Trial Laptop Program
This semester Brisbane State High School is conducting a trial laptop program with three classes of Year
10 students receiving a laptop for their schooling. Students were eligible to participate based on their
subject selections within one of the following combinations:
• English, Maths B and Japanese
• English, Maths B and Biological Science
• English, Maths B and Economics
The laptops are predominately used by students in the combination set that has made them eligible to
participate in the program. All laptops have been installed with Education Qld and BSHS site software
which is available to students at home as well as at school.
The purpose of this trial program is to investigate the benefits and challenges faced by students, parents
and staff in respect to learning within a 1-to-1 laptop environment.
This program included a comprehensive induction for all participants, including:
• A letter of offer to participate and invitation to an induction evening.
• A newsletter outlining the program, notes from the Principal, technical support information and
some FAQs.
• An induction (presentation evening) outlining the program.
• A Laptop Acceptable Use Agreement.
• A list of the specifications of the laptop, software and accessories.
• Details of the benefits and risks associated with a 1-to-1 Laptop Program.
• Involvement of all stakeholders in an evaluation of the program.
Shortly we will be conducting a mid-program review to evaluate the program.
More information will be published on this program and its outcomes in future newsletter articles.
Our P&C is constantly facing unexpected challenges some of which involve spending money on
incidentals as well as on the big projects such as the relocation of the Uniform Shop.
It’s looking great – light, bright and packed full of uniforms. Now it’s time to add the signage. So the
call is going out to any parents who may be in the sign writing business who may wish to donate their
services to the P&C.
If you are feeling generous of spirit and of time we would love to hear from you.
Please contact Sue, our P&C Manager, on 3291 4173.
She would LOVE to hear from you.
The P&C is putting out a general call to all parents. There are those of us, like me, who are useless at
everything but can donate their time to help out at sporting events. Then, there are those parents who
have professional skills that the P&C would like to tap into.
Again. The call is out. If you can help in any way, please come forward. Periodically, we will be repeating
the request for specific donations.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Information sheet for Parents/Guardians on how to access your child’s Senior Education and Training
Plan (SET Plans) at home.
Year 10 students are completing the SET Plan on line in PCL classes. We invite you and your child to go
through this together and edit as you deem appropriate. This process is the end product of the Year
10 career education programme and, at this point, is the plan for the senior years of schooling and
beyond.
Students will revisit this Plan at regular intervals over the next two years to update it as their ideas and
educational progress evolve.
The steps to follow are:
• Complete an internet search for One School and click on ‘Login’.
• You will be directed to the webpage for One School (MIS Login) which is the same as the school
network login. Your child will need to enter his/her MIS ID and Password.
• If this is the first time a student is logging into this site they will need to read through the
‘Responsible Use Agreement’ and then click to accept these terms to move on.
• Once at the ‘Welcome Page’ click on the tab labelled ‘My Education Plan’. Students can then
complete all the sections of their Learning Plan (if not already completed), starting with ‘Intended
Learning’ remembering to click on the save button at the bottom of each section.
• Return back to the ‘Welcome Page’. Change the ‘Available Reports/Letters…’ to ‘SET Plan’.
A SET Plan will be generated from the responses made which can be four to eight pages in
length.
Recently Year 11s had the opportunity to update their SET Plan in PCL as well.
The P&C Association at Brisbane State High School operates both the Vulture Street & Merivale Street
Canteens. The Canteens provide a wide variety of healthy food at very reasonable prices as you can see on
the attached Menu. The volume of ‘business’ through the Canteens enables them to keep prices low and
operate with a surplus each year (Approximately $80 000 in 2009).
In recent years P&C funds have provided shade structures on the Vulture Street Campus, fit-out of the new
Performing Arts Complex and construction of the new Canteen on the Vulture Street Campus. P&C funds
also employ the groundsman at Fursden Road (the school playing fields at Carina), the Boatman (who
supports the Rowing program) and an annual $20 000 donation to the library. These regular contributions will
continue in 2010. A major project planned for 2010 is the relocation of the Uniform Shop into more
convenient and spacious premises.
Please support your school by encouraging your son or daughter to buy his or her lunch at one of the
Canteens. If each State High student purchased lunch one day a week at one of the Canteens, we estimate
that the Canteen surplus available would double - which would be an enormous assistance in ensuring that
the educational experience offered by State High remains as great as it is.
