Gallery of Modern Art Project
The Gallery has invited a group of 15
visual art students from Brisbane State
High School to participate in a week
of workshops during the upcoming
October school holidays (Monday,
September 27 - Friday, October 1).
The workshops will be delivered by
leading contemporary artist, Romuald
Hazoume from Benin and the students’
work from the workshops will be
displayed as part of the 21st Century: Art
in the First Decade exhibition opening
December 18 2010.
In addition a film about the making of
the art works with the artist will include
interviews with the students which
will be screened in the exhibition space.
The exhibition is titled Twenty-first Century focusing exclusively on works executed between 2000 and
2010 and will occupy the entire Gallery of Modern Art building and be accompanied by a comprehensive
publication, a children’s publication and series of public programs.
Twenty-first Century will be broad in its geographic and generational scope including senior and emerging
artists from Australia (indigenous and non-indigenous), Asia, the Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Americas.
Art works currently confirmed for the exhibition include major pieces by the Atlas Group (Lebanon),
Pierre Bismuth (France), Candice Breitz (South Africa), Thomas Demand (Germany), Romuald Hazoumé
(Benin), William Kentridge (South Africa), Aernout Mik (The Netherlands), Moataz Nasr (Egypt), Rivane
Neuenschwander (Brazil), Tobias Putrih (Slovenia), Robin Rhode (South Africa), SUPERFLEX (Denmark),
Armando Andrade Tudela (Peru), Sharif Waked (Palestine) and Yang Fudong (China).
An important component of the exhibition will be a series of projects developed by the Gallery’s
Children’s Art Centre (CAC) in collaboration with exhibiting artists. The CAC is a dedicated exhibition
space within the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) and is focused on presenting contemporary art in ways
that are appealing and engaging for children and their families.
The exhibitions and programs offer children a gallery experience that is enriching and insightful with
hands-on activities developed to engage young minds with the ideas and processes surrounding
contemporary art.
We are extremely excited about this wonderful opportunity that has been extended to our students.
Art Sub-Committee Meeting
