Brisbane State High Newsletter Page 8 of 10 Extra Curricular Activities Sports News Australian Schools Cross Country The Australian Schools Cross Country titles were held at St Pauls College, Bald Hills on Saturday, August 21. Three students from BSHS represented Queensland School Sport and four represented Athletics Queensland following qualifying performances at recent events. L.Cook (13 years Boys) ran a fast time for the 3000m course and lead onto the oval, only to be gunned down at the finish. His courageous second place followed wins at the titles in 2009 and 2008. L.Young(15 years Girls) ran well to place third over the 4000m journey. She was easily the first Queenslander home. G.Anderson(16 years Boys) ran a consistent race in the 6000m event to place 27th. Other students to compete at the Australian Titles were C.Pearce – 48th 13 years girls, N.Assefa – 67th 14 years girls, C.Black – 52nd 16 years boys and S.Cowie – 13 years boys. BSRA Girls’ Head of the River Congratulations to all girls who represented BSHS in Saturday’s BSRA Head of the River at Kawana Waters on the Sunshine Coast. There were a number of outstanding and personal best performances on the day. The girls have worked tirelessly for six months to gain these excellent results. M. Jones, in one of her final races for the school, came second in the Year 12 single scull, missing first place by less than a second, to the winner of the race an Australian representative from this year’s U19 World Rowing Championships. The Year 9 First Quad Scull consisting of I.Binder (Cox), B.Barham (Stroke), R.Pihan (3 seat), K.Ramsay-Samrai (2 seat) and C.McIntyre (bow) came second in a hotly contested A final with only five seconds separating first and fifth. We would like to thank all parents and coaches who were involved in the 2010 season. In particular we acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our Girls Rowing MIC, Mr Peter Hicks, during his first year at BSHS. His enthusiasm and extensive rowing knowledge has propelled of our girls’ rowing program forward. We look forward to the achievements ahead in the 2011 season. P&C Association Uniform Shop ** New Opening Hours ** Monday to Friday 8am to 11am Tuesday only 3pm to 4:30pm Come and see our new Uniform Shop located on the Ground Floor of E Block (right next door to the Vulture Street Canteen). Brisbane State High Newsletter Page 9 of 10 Canteen Prices Anyone who has worked in or used the services of our BSHS School Canteens would know how lucky we are to have such fresh healthy food on offer at very affordable prices. Unfortunately, rising food prices and the increased need for paid workers (due to a shortage of volunteers) has meant that there will be some price rises to our Canteen Menu in the new term. Please see (attached) our revised Canteen Menu which will become effective on Monday, October 4 2010. Appointment of an Auditor Each year the P&C Executive Committee must ensure that the P&C books are audited and a copy of the audited Annual Financial Statement is sent to the Minister through Education Queensland. The P&C is seeking Expressions of Interest from within the school community for a qualified person to carry out the 2010 Audit. To be appointed, the External Auditor must hold one of the following qualifications: • Accountancy practice/Independent CPA/CA. • Public Servant (with necessary maturity & financial experience). • Bank Officer or other competent person (with necessary maturity & financial experience). If you are qualified and wish to submit an Expression of Interest to undertake this year’s Audit, please send through a short submission detailing your relevant qualifications, any previous experience and a quote for costs or schedule of fees to carry out the audit. Ms Sue de Stefani, Executive ManaGEr P&C Help Needed Our P&C is constantly facing unexpected challenges some of which involve spending money on incidentals as well as on the big projects such as the relocation of the Uniform Shop. It’s looking great – light, bright and packed full of uniforms. Now it’s time to add the signage. So the call is going out to any parents who may be in the sign writing business who may wish to donate their services to the P&C. If you are feeling generous of spirit and of time we would love to hear from you. Please contact Sue, our P&C Manager, on 3291 4173. She would LOVE to hear from you. The P&C is putting out a general call to all parents. There are those of us, like me, who are useless at everything but can donate their time to help out at sporting events. Then, there are those parents who have professional skills that the P&C would like to tap into. Again. The call is out. If you can help in any way, please come forward. Periodically, we will be repeating the request for specific donations. Thanking you in anticipation.
