more than ever. The spread of rumour, myth and straight out misinformation about public education is a never
ending symptom of the fact that many people seem comfortable to hold strong opinions about something of
which they have no experience and no real knowledge.
Where else do students experience such rich diversity in terms of gender, race, cultural background, religion,
aspiration and values? What a priceless environment in which to have your beliefs challenged and tested.
Where else but in public education would this rich, diverse mix be thrown together and emerge as something
that thrives and works?
Above all else though, the proof is in the pudding. Our 2010 graduates will be the best evidence to the doubters
and cynics that public education is alive and well.
Semester 1 outcomes…
Another wonderful semester of achievement by State High Years 8, 9 and 10 students has been revealed by our
Semester 1 A to E data:
A B C D E
Year 8 34.8% 43.2% 18.1% 3.7% 0.3%
Year 9 37.8% 41.2% 16.3% 4.2% 0.5%
Year 10 33.3% 41.9% 20.0% 4.6% 0.2%
Please Note: Each percentage total represents the percentage of all grades at that particular level.
For example, ‘Year 8 A: 34.8%’ represents the fact that 34.8% of all the grades of Year 8 students for Semester 1 were at A Level.
This data indicates what happens when you mix a substantial dose of talent with hard work and commitment.
Congratulations students!
And finally…
Congratulations to the following groups of students for the recent achievements:
The Year 8 and Year 12 Senior A Debating Teams who participated in the Grand Final of Queensland Debating
on Wednesday, August 25.
The Year 8 team defeated Brisbane Girls Grammar School 3-0 and are premiers in the Year 8 division, our first
premiership in over 20 years.
The Year 12 Senior A team were defeated 3-2 by Brisbane Grammar School and are runners-up in this division,
our best result in this competition since 1992.
B.Arthur, our Debating Captain, was awarded “Best Speaker in the QDU Finals”, a prize that she richly
deserved.
A crowd of over 350 witnessed the Senior A debate – the State High contingent of supporters was certainly
the largest.
Well done to all concerned. This has been one of our most successful QDU debating seasons in the school’s
history.
On Saturday, August 21, our Bring It On Crew competed against 12 other crews and won the Bring It On Grand
Final at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre.
Their commitment level was incredible – they practised every day - morning and afternoon - for months
leading up to the grand final and they choreographed the entire routine themselves.
Their tricks were outstanding and their commitment exemplified teamwork – working across grade levels.
Each of the students wore a wristband stating their reasons for dancing - some of which included for their
family, for their school, for freedom.
A number of people on the night said their performance was of international standard.
On Sunday, August 22, our Theatresports team won the Grand Final held at La Boite Theatre Company.
