702.1 THE COURSE<br />
ARTICLE 702<br />
VENUE STANDARDS<br />
.1 The course shall be measured as accurately as possible with the available navigational or<br />
survey equipment.<br />
.2 The course shall be in water that is subject to only minor currents or tide and may be salt or<br />
fresh water.<br />
.3 With the exception of beach starts and beach finishes, the minimum depth of water at any<br />
point on the course shall be 1.4 meters.<br />
.4 Guide Buoy - A distinctively marked colored float in the water, anchored to provide navigational<br />
guidance for swimmers, may be used. Guide buoys shall be non-directional in nature<br />
and swimmers may pass on either side of the buoy. Guide buoys must be colored differently<br />
from turn buoys.<br />
702.2 WATER/AIR TEMPERATURE — The race shall not begin if the following conditions are<br />
not satisfied (effective 9/17/11):<br />
.1 The water temperature shall not be less than 16°C (60.8° F).<br />
.2 For races of 5K and above, the water temperature shall not exceed 29.45° C (85° F).<br />
.3 The air temperature and water temperature when added together shall not be less than 30°<br />
C (118° F) nor greater than 63° C (177.4° F).<br />
702.3 WATER QUALITY (effective 9/17/11)<br />
.1 If water quality meets the standards of the local testing authority, the water quality will be<br />
deemed acceptable unless otherwise determined by the Safety Officer or Independent<br />
Safety Monitor.<br />
.2 If an exceptional event such as heavy rain or flooding affects the water quality, the Referee,<br />
the Meet Director, or the Independent Safety Monitor shall have the authority to postpone or<br />
cancel the race.<br />
702.4 THE START<br />
.1 The start line shall be clearly defined by either overhead apparatus or by removable equipment<br />
at water level.<br />
.2 If the race is started from a fixed platform, the water depth requirements of 103.2.3 must be<br />
met. Additionally, the Course Officer and Referee shall have the start area inspected for hidden<br />
underwater obstacles or obstructions. If there is any doubt as to the condition of the<br />
start area, an in-water or beach start shall be used.<br />
702.5 TURNS/CHANGES IN COURSE<br />
.1 Turn Buoys - All turns and other changes in direction on the course shall be clearly indicated<br />
by turn buoys which shall be distinctively marked colored floats, anchored to mark the<br />
course for swimmers. Turn buoys shall be directional in nature and must be passed with a<br />
right shoulder turn or left shoulder turn, as stated in the pre-race instructions.<br />
