A suite of technologies that use energy sources that renew themselves constantly over
relatively short periods of time—months or years—instead of centuries, as is the case with
fossil fuels.
The ability to respond effectively to an energy emergency and to recover quickly from
damage. A resilient energy system is not necessarily damage-resistant. Rather, it is able
to continue operating despite damage, and to return quickly to normal operations when
damage occurs. Since energy systems are not 100 percent damage proof, resiliency is
considered to be as important as damage prevention.
Negative effects from an energy disruption that occur between essential services (lateral
movement) such as from banking to telecommunications. These are also termed serviceto-service
effects or impacts.
An electricity delivery system that monitors, protects, and automatically optimizes the
operation of its interconnected elements from central and distributed generators through
the high-voltage network and distribution system, to industrial users and commercial
building automation systems, to energy storage installations, and to residential consumers
and their thermostats, electric vehicles, appliances, and other household devices.
