Faulty vacuum advance pipes on carburetter-fitted Minis create enough trouble - on injection cars they cause mayhem! Most vacuum pipe problems are caused b y the perishing or splitting of the connectors at either end, creating air leaks into the inlet manifold and sending entirely the wrong information to the engine management system. For the sake of a few pence-worth of connector and a moment or two to fit it, you could magic a star tling recovery of health from your engine! If you’ve checked the vacuum pipes and found them to be serviceable, try inspecting the hose running between the inlet manifold and the brake servo and its connections - it’s another prime candidate for air leaks into the induction system. The new quad dry coil created twin sparks, dispensing with the need to switch ignition high tension voltage between each cylinder and therefore making the distributor redundant. The single point injection models that continued to be built for Japan from 1997 on also received direct electronic ignition. For once, we’ve broken with Somerford Mini catalogue convention here to show change points between the electronic components by vehicle identification number (VIN), rather than by year. This is of course because it is vitally important that you match compatible electronic components with each other, and the only sure-fire way of determining what’s fitted to your car is by the VIN. This number may be found on the VIN plate attached to the RH inner wing under the bonnet, plus on later cars it may also be found on a small plate in the LH corner of the the windscreen. 20 GCL143 COIL, push-on H.T. lead and spade terminals 1 1991-96, single point injection (SPi). 21 GCL204 COIL, quad, electronic 1 1997 on, multi-point injection (MPi); also 1997 on, SPi (Japan). 22 12G2994 BRACKET, coil to cylinder head 1 1991-96, SPi models, Lucas coil. Spark Plugs Minis fitted with electronic ignition and fuel injection should always use suppressed spark plugs (otherwise known as resistor plugs), which significantly cut down the amount of interference generated by the ignition system. The correct operation of engine electronic control units and electronic ignition modules could otherwise be affected. 29 GSP4462 SPARK PLUG , suppressed type , 4 Single point injection (SPi) 1991-96, original fitment Japan 1991 on. BPR6ES SPARK PLUG , suppressed type , 4 Single point injection (SPi) 1991-96, NGK alternative Japan 1991 on. In 1991 the Cooper 1275cc engine lost its carburetter in favour of fuel injection, primarily to comply with emissions regulations. The injection system used was a fairly simple affair, employing a single injector housed in a throttle body on the inlet manifold. Known within the factory confines as Throttle Body Injection (TBi), it is always referred to as Single Point Injection (SPi) in this catalogue, because that is the name universally used by the marketplace. The Rover Mini Cabriolet introduced in 1993 also used the Cooper SPi engine, and from 1994 the other Minis in the line up (Sprite, Mayfair, plus the many limited editions based on them) also went over to single point injection, set up to a slightly lower state of tune than that used for the Cooper and Cabriolet. Single point injection ceased to be fitted for most countries after 1996, or (VIN) 134454, being replaced by a twin injector system known by all as Multi Point Injection (MPi). However Japan continued with SPi until exports to that mark et finished in 1999. As you may notice from the coils section above, the 1997 on Japan spec SPi was rather different from the 1991-96 SPi set-up - the most visual difference being the deletion of the distributor and fitment of the quad coil more usually associated with the European 1997 on MPi models. In a few export markets the Cooper came with the lo wer performance Sprite/Mayfair engine, using that engine’s control unit. Which countries this concerned is particularly poorly documented, so further research may be required before ordering. A ray of hope is that some ECUs w ere marked with the state of tune:‘Standard Performance’ means Sprite/Mayfair, whereas ‘High Performance’ means Cooper. 39 MNE10027E ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT, engine , 1 Manual, Cooper, up to (VIN) 060487, reconditioned except Japan.
