Ignition and Starter Switches
Fascia Ignition and Floor Star ter Switches, 1959-64
(Not Super, Cooper or Cooper S)
This is the ignition switch system employing the famous early Mini trade mark floor starter button.
Although it was used up until 1964, none of the upmarket Super, Cooper or Cooper S models
manufactured before that year were so fitted, these models being the first to receive the combined
ignition and starter switch mounted on the fascia switch panel - the combined ignition and starter
switch is not the same as the ignition switch used on floor starter cars, and it is listed further down
this page.
Pre-cut ‘FS’ type keys (the most commonly used key type on Minis) are available. To order from
Somerford Mini, simply quote the FS number from your existing keys (or alternatively from the
lock barrel, if it has the number stamped on it); the number will be between FS879 - FS955.
Steering Lock with Ignition/Starter Switch, Selected Fitment 1963-71
(Lock faces driver)
There were two types of steering lock that could be fitted in this period: the earlier style accepts a
round switch in the back of it, whereas the switch on the later lock is attached by means of a
diamond-shaped flange. In the event of the ear ly lock and switch not being serviceable, the later lock
13H6459 can be used as a complete assembly to replace it.
77 13H4861 STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY 1 Early design; includes two keys.
78 27H6237 SWITCH, ignition and starter 1
79 37H4325 BOLT, shear 2
80 13H6459 STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY 1 Later design; includes two keys.
82 37H5935 BOLT, shear 2
Steering Lock with Ignition/Starter Switch, Standard Fitment 1971-75
(Lock faces side)
The 18G8892 steering lock assembly was ‘dual-sourced’ by the factory from two manufacturers.
Unfortunately the switches and their attachment screws are different and not interchangeable, and so
you should identify the manufacturer of your steering lock before ordering either of these two items.
The lock casting or switch will reveal the manufacturer to be Lowe and Fletcher (LF) or Magnatex, and
sometimes Lowe and Fletcher keys have ‘LF’ stamped on them.
At this time, Canada used a similar looking, but different, lock assembly with a more complex switch.
For details of available par ts for this item, please contact us .
83 18G8892 STEERING LOCK ASSEMBLY 1 Includes tw o keys.
84 37H6962 SWITCH, ignition and starter 1 Lowe and Fletcher (LF) manufacture.
37H6544 SWITCH, ignition and starter 1 Alternative Magnatex manufacture.
The 1969-75 version (13H7779) of this switch may be used as a replacement by removing the multiplug
and replacing it with original style bullet connectors or Lucar spade connectors.
Floor Mounted Headlamp Dip Switches
1959-67
Note that in the event of the 1959-62 round dip switch not being available , the later rectangular bodied
switch may easily be fitted instead. The non-slip cap listed here for the rectangular switch is not
original for the Mini (it originates from prestige cars of the period which were fitted with the same
switch), but makes for a very worthy, simple and cost-effective improvement.
Neutral Start Inhibitor Switch
The very first automatic transmission Minis used a switch controlling both the starter inhibitor (so you
can’t star t the car in gear) and reversing lights. Since, however, most automatic Minis were of a more
basic specification and didn’t have reversing lights fitted (which were only an accessory at that time
anyway), the decision was soon taken to fit a less complicated, less expensive starter inhibitor only switch.
A separate reversing light switch was then added elsewhere on the gearchange if required.
The early dual purpose switch may be simply replaced by the later inhibitor switch on 1964-65 cars
without reversing lamps (i.e. most cars of that period). However, if you have a 1964-65 automatic with
reversing lamps, the later switch can only be used if you also replace the die-cast control housing under
the gear lever with the later 1966 onwards type and fit the separate GAE191 reversing light switch.
