For reasons of economic rationalisation, the 1997 on SPi engine for Japan had many features that w ere<br />

really introduced as part of the European specification MPi programme - the distributorless ignition<br />

being a case in point. Some of these features were not made use of on the 1997 on SPi, an example<br />

of which is the hole in the engine block for the MPi cam sensor, which had to be plugged on SPi<br />

models:<br />

Multi-Point Injection (MPi) 1997 On (Not Japan)<br />

For the 1997 model year, single point injection was dropped for all markets except Japan in favour of a<br />

two injector system - one injector for each inlet por t in the engine’s cylinder head. This system is<br />

known by one and all as Multi Point Injection (MPi). Naturally the electronic control system for the<br />

engine changed to suit, an updated version of Rover’s MEMS management system, MEMS 2J, being used.<br />

There were no MPi automatic transmission models (though automatic SPi models continued to be built<br />

for Japan, and in fact made up the vast majority of Japan-bound cars) and only one level of performance<br />

was available; as a result,browsing through the electronic control units is rather easier than SPi. There’s<br />

only one change point,and as was the case with SPi it’s more accurate and easier to identify using the<br />

VIN numbers rather than years.<br />

As with the previous single point injection section, here we are straying from Somerford Mini<br />

catalogue convention by showing change points between the electronic components by vehicle<br />

identification number (VIN), rather than by year. It is vitally important that you match<br />

compatible electronic components with each other, and the only sure-fire way of determining what’s<br />

fitted to your car is by the VIN. This number may be found on the VIN plate attached to the RH<br />

inner wing under the bonnet or on a small plate in the LH corner of the the windscreen.<br />
