Additionally, a new speedometer chrome bezel and glass are now available to help smarten up a
tired and scratched instrument. The bezel, being the early ‘V’ profile type, is appropriate for 1959-
67 speedometers, while the glass fits all years:
Have you ever considered how many times a speedometer cable turns in an average year’s driving?
Taking a speedometer ‘turns per mile’ figure to be approximately 1000, that works out at a million
turns for every thousand miles... It therefore makes sense, when fitting a new speedometer cable, to
give it a bit of care and attention to afford it the best possible chance of a long and fault-free life.
A very sparing wipe of light grease on the inner cable before fitting (don’t over-grease it) and ensuring
that no bends in the cable are under 6” radius approximately will help prevent premature wear between
the inner and outer cable, inner cable distortion or failure and speedometer needle ‘snatch’.
The Smiths Instruments part numbers for the voltage stabilizers and gauges are shown in the
remarks column, to assist with identification. As with speedometers, some of these gauges are
available new, while others are reconditioned exchange items. Please see the Somerford Mini price
list or contact us for the status of the gauge you require.
Originally there was only one stabilizer (Smiths no. BR1310/00) fitted between 1967 and 1985,
irrespective of vehicle electrical system polarity. Today, however, the manufacturer produces polarityspecific
stabilizers - be sure to order the correct replacement for your Mini.
Faulty Reading Fuel and Temperature Gauges
From 1964 onwards, Minis w ere fitted with a device called a voltage stabilizer (you’ll find it screwed to
the back of the speedometer) which ‘ironed out’ voltage fluctuations to the fuel gauge and water
temperature gauge. Minis without a voltage stabilizer (pre-1964, approximately, depending on model) can
be easily recognised when turning on the ignition - the fuel gauge will instantly give its reading, instead
of the needle gliding slowly and gently up to it. Effectively, a voltage stabilizer acts as a damper to
remove wild fluctuations in gauge readings when, for example, your Mini is going up hill and down dale
(fuel gauge) or the cooling system thermostat opens or closes (temperature gauge).
If the fuel gauge is giving a false reading, it may be the gauge that is at fault, the sender unit in the
tank that is at fault, or one of the wiring connections in the circuit (actually, most commonly, an
earthing connection). A quick trip around the car with a voltmeter should detect where the problem is.
Similarly, if the temperature gauge is giving a false reading, the gauge or the temperature transmitter on
the engine may be at fault, or once again the wiring connections between the two.
HOWEVER, if you have a 1964 onwards car and BOTH the fuel gauge and temperature gauge are
malfunctioning, the primary suspect has to be the voltage stabilizer,or the connections to it.
