11AC Alter nator (External Regulator) Up To 1969
Reconditioning AC type alternators is becoming more difficult, due to the limited stocks of spare parts
available. If you require a reconditioned unit, please contact Somerford Mini first to ensure we
can help. Replacing an external regulator AC alternator with a more serviceable and powerful
internal regulator ACR type is an option, but you should be confident of your electrical abilities if
you intend to make the conversion. AC alternator fitted Minis are positive earth, and you will
need to convert the system to negative earth to fit an ACR alternator. There is also a quantity
of terminal conversion and rewiring required to connect an ACR alternator into the system.

16ACR and 17ACR Alter nator (Internal Regulator) 1969-80
Several different alternators w ere fitted in this period, of varying power rating (16 or 17ACR) and using
two methods of sensing. Initially battery-sensed alternators were fitted; at unspecified times the designs
changed to machine-sensed. The situation today as regards replacement alternators is that all ACR types
(as far as Mini is concerned) supersede to a single, 17ACR, machine-sensed unit. If you have an
early 1970s Mini and you suspect the alternator hasn’t been changed in the last 15 years or so,
then you may well still have a battery-sensed alternator fitted. There should be no problem in
exchanging it for a GXE2211 machine-sensed item.

The following are parts specific to original Mini equipment ACR alternators. The Lucas identifying
number should still be visible on the casing, and will usually be required when ordering parts. Batterysensed
alternators were numbered 23748, 23750 or 23804;machine-sensed units w ere numbered
23640, 23725, 23774 or 23802.

Whether your Mini is currently fitted with an A127/45 or A127/55 (45 or 55 amp) alternator, when you
ask for a reconditioned exchange unit you will receive a 55 amp rated alternator.
