DRS TECHNOLOGIES
REFUELING IN FLIGHT:
READY FOR TAKE-OFF
GREAT EXPECTATIONS AMONG THE
EMPLOYEES OF DRS INTEGRATED
MANUFACTURING SOLUTIONS RE-
GARDING THE TENDER LAUNCHED BY
THE AIR FORCE FOR THE NEW MULTI-
MISSION REFUELING AIRCRAFT. AT
BOEING – IN THE RUNNING FOR THE
ORDER – THE FINMECCANICA COM-
PANY WOULD SUPPLY THE AERIAL RE-
FUELING OPERATORS STATION, A
STATE-OF-THE-ART SOLUTION FOR IN-
FLIGHT REFUELING
On Monday, June 7, more than
700 employees at DRS Integrated
Manufacturing Solutions
in Johnstown, Pennsylvania
held a rally to gain local, state and
national support for Boeing’s bid to
secure the contract for the NewGen
Tanker from the US Air Force.
The NewGen Tanker is Boeing’s latest
American-made, multi-mission
aerial refueling aircraft, which Boeing
asserts will save US taxpayers
nearly USD 29 billion in fuel consumption
dollars. The Tanker would
be an upgrade from the Air Force’s
current KC-135 tanker, which is also
made by Boeing, holding more fuel,
cargo and troops and providing an
easier to operate interface than the
current version. Boeing is bidding for
the contract against French airplane
manufacturer and EADS subsidiary
Airbus. The contract is expected to
be awarded in November.
The Aerial Refueling Operators Station
(AROS), which DRS would provide
for the program, uses state-ofthe-art
technology to control aerial
refueling operations. Aerial refueling
is the process of transferring fuel
from one aircraft to another during
flight. As the originator of this technology
in the 1940s, Boeing has long
been an industry leader.
According to Boeing, the AROS will
deliver improvements over the KC-
135 Tanker including:
• an advanced fly-by-wire system
offering more precise and reliable
control;
• a well-developed set of rules that
are used to determine the commands
to be sent to a system to
give the AROS rock-solid flying
characteristics;
• the Automatic Load Alleviation
System, which automatically
sends flight commands to alleviate
forces on the boom and reduce
boom operator workload;
• a full-time Independent Disconnect
System that eliminates the
danger of damage to the AROS or
the receiver aircraft. Allowing the
AROS operator to retract the noz-
zle from the receiver aircraft receptacle
independent of the state
of the receiver boom latches;
• reduced maintenance requirements.
Estimated at up to USD 50 billion to
build 179 NewGen Tankers, the proposed
contract represents economic
opportunity for Pennsylvania, as
Boeing plans to utilize several companies
in the state, including Bren-
ner Aerostructures in Bensalem;
Dunmore in Bristol; Maxima Technologies
in Lancaster; Reiker in Aston;
and DRS in Johnstown.
The Tankers will also support approximately
50,000 jobs throughout
the United States, with more than
800 suppliers in more than 40
states.
Relying on its history as a trusted
provider of refueling consoles for
Boeing’s 767 Tanker sales internationally,
DRS Integrated Manufacturing
Solutions would build the AROS
console and would also be responsible
for the cable design of the Tanker.
DRS Integrated Manufacturing Solutions
is a 180 square foot (55 square
meter) manufacturing facility that
provides end-to-end electronic manufacturing
solutions and services
ranging from engineering, supply
chain management, assembly, system
integration and testing.
The AROS console allows aerial refueling
operators to plan, monitor
and manage their workload more
effectively.
Boeing provided a NewGen Tanker
simulator for the rally, which allowed
visitors and DRS employees to
experience the latest technology. It
provided a simulated refueling of an
in-flight fighter aircraft and an opportunity
to see what it would be
like to pilot the tanker.
Dignitaries at the rally included US
Rep. Mark Critz and State Senator
John Wozniak of Pennsylvania; Cambria
County, Pa., commissioners; local
economic development representatives
and business executives.
During the rally, a teaming agreement
was signed by DRS C3 & Aviation
Group President Alan Dietrich
and Mark DeVoss, Boeing’s Director
of Supplier Management for Tanker
Programs, to mark the partnership
between the two companies, should
the US Air Force select Boeing for the
program.
Speaking to DRS employees, elected
officials and others, Dietrich said,
“The US Air Force selection of a new
tanker provider will have a major impact
on the Johnstown area, and especially
here at DRS. Awarding the
contract to Boeing would help DRS
continue to provide quality jobs to
the great people of this region.”
When asked why Boeing chose to
partner with DRS for this potential
opportunity, Doug Holmes, Boeing’s
BDS advocacy communications manager,
replied, “DRS was a great partner
on the previous RARO (Remote
Aerial Refueling Operator) programs.
They completed the international
tanker program requirements on
schedule and cost competitively,
making them a perfect teammate.
DRS has already proven to The Boeing
Company that they have the
know-how and experience to provide
the AROS refueling stations for
the next NewGen Tanker. We at Boeing
believe that our suppliers are
what make us stand out when bidding
for these contracts.”
