ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. C<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al automobiles are equipped with a lead acid battery that supplies 3 kilowatts (kW) of power at<br />

12 volts; this is sufficient to supply power to operate some accessories <strong>and</strong> to operate the starter motor (a small electric motor that<br />

gets the engine turning so the self-sustaining compressi<strong>on</strong>-combusti<strong>on</strong> cycle can begin). When the engine is running, electrical<br />

power is supplied by the alternator.<br />
