2 CLOUD COMPUTING loud compu ng has been one of the ho est areas of venture capital in the recent past. Investors see it as a rapidly growing Csector with massive opportuni es and the long-term poten al for huge returns. Cloud compu ng is not a new rage but remains a rage, nonetheless. It is s ll evolving as new possibili es are being tried out. In India, the cloud market stood at $688 million in 2012 and is likely to increase to $3.5 billion by 2016, according to market intelligence firm IDC. According to Gartner, the public cloud services market globally is likely to grow to touch $200 Billion by 2016. The small and medium-sized enterprises (SME) are prime targets given their limited budget for investment and maintenance of IT infrastructure. In fact, a report by Circle Research sponsored by SAP, says 90% of the SMEs in the country believe that adop ng cloud compu ng would help improve their business and become more efficient. “There’s no way that company exists in a year,” said Tom Siebel, founder of CRM vendor Siebel Systems. He compared Salesforce, a cloud compu ng company, with Pets.com and eToys in the spring of 2001. Salesforce went public three years later while Siebel Systems got swallowed by Oracle in 2005. Acloud refers to a dis nct IT environment that is designed for the purpose of remotely provisioning scalable and measured IT resources. But “cloud compu ng” is a general term. Under that umbrella, there are companies working on solu ons for cloud infrastructure, security, storage, hos ng, data analy cs, mobile, IT, customer service, integra ons, opera ons, etc. Some focus on specific ver cals, like finance, healthcare, educa on or real estate.
