Monica McWilliams, Professor of Women’s<br />
Studies in the School of Criminology, Social<br />
Policy and Politics and a core member of the<br />
Transitional Justice Institute has undertaken<br />
extensive research in the field of domestic<br />
violence with her work leading to the first<br />
cross-cutting government strategy on<br />
domestic violence in the UK. She is currently<br />
assisting international organisations in<br />
humanitarian disasters and conflict regions,<br />
developing practice and policy on the<br />
inclusion of women.<br />
Professor McWilliams has acted as an expert<br />
advisor to the Afghanistan High Peace<br />
Council, the Syrian Opposition Coalition and<br />
to civil society organisations throughout the<br />
Middle East and Africa. She has undertaken<br />
work for the United Nations and was recently<br />
engaged in a high-level meeting with UN<br />
Special Envoys from around the world.<br />
She has been an advisor on conflict<br />
resolution for a range of influential bodies<br />
and sits on the Board of Trócaire. She is<br />
a member of the Governing Council of<br />
Interpeace, based in Geneva where she<br />
recently addressed a UN International<br />
Peace Day event.<br />
Appointed by the Minister of Justice as an<br />
Oversight Commissioner for Prison Reform<br />
in Northern Ireland, she will be the Visiting<br />
Professor in Human Rights at the University<br />
of Chicago during spring semester, 2015.
