13 Distinguished Enterprise Fellowship Award 2014-15 Professor Monica McWilliams Belfast/Jordanstown – Monday 15 December, 11.00am Monica McWilliams, Professor of Women’s Studies in the School of Criminology, Social Policy and Politics and a core member of the Transitional Justice Institute has undertaken extensive research in the field of domestic violence with her work leading to the first cross-cutting government strategy on domestic violence in the UK. She is currently assisting international organisations in humanitarian disasters and conflict regions, developing practice and policy on the inclusion of women. Professor McWilliams has acted as an expert advisor to the Afghanistan High Peace Council, the Syrian Opposition Coalition and to civil society organisations throughout the Middle East and Africa. She has undertaken work for the United Nations and was recently engaged in a high-level meeting with UN Special Envoys from around the world. She has been an advisor on conflict resolution for a range of influential bodies and sits on the Board of Trócaire. She is a member of the Governing Council of Interpeace, based in Geneva where she recently addressed a UN International Peace Day event. Appointed by the Minister of Justice as an Oversight Commissioner for Prison Reform in Northern Ireland, she will be the Visiting Professor in Human Rights at the University of Chicago during spring semester, 2015.
Ulster University Graduation 2014 14 Honorary Graduand Sir Ronald Weatherup Belfast/Jordanstown – Monday 15 December, 3.30pm Sir Ronald Weatherup, a Judge of the High Court of Northern Ireland, is to receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD) for his outstanding contribution to the legal profession. He was appointed to the High Court in 2001, and has been a Judicial Review Judge since 2003 and Commercial Judge since 2010. Sir Ronald was called to the Bar of Northern Ireland in 1971 and took Silk in 1993. He served as Junior Crown Counsel for Northern Ireland from 1989 to 1993 and Senior Crown Counsel for Northern Ireland from 1997 to 2001. He was educated at Methodist College and Queen’s University Belfast. Sir Ronald has served as a Commissioner with the Northern Ireland Judicial Appointments Commission since 2005. He is also a former member of the Judicial Studies Board for Northern Ireland and held the position of Judge in Residence at Queen’s University Belfast. Sir Ronald was appointed Visitor to the University by the Queen in 2004. He stood down as Visitor in July 2014 following 10 years in the role. During that time he made a significant contribution to the work of the University, including many recommendations that have helped shape the University’s processes and procedures.
