Sir Ronald Weatherup<br />

Sir Ronald Weatherup, a Judge of the High<br />
Court of Northern Ireland, is to receive the<br />
honorary degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD)<br />
for his outstanding contribution to the<br />
legal profession.<br />
He was appointed to the High Court in 2001,<br />
and has been a Judicial Review Judge since<br />
2003 and Commercial Judge since 2010.<br />
Sir Ronald was called to the Bar of<br />
Northern Ireland in 1971 and took Silk in<br />
1993. He served as Junior Crown Counsel<br />
for Northern Ireland from 1989 to 1993<br />
and Senior Crown Counsel for Northern<br />
Ireland from 1997 to 2001. He was<br />
educated at Methodist College and<br />
Queen’s University Belfast.<br />
Sir Ronald has served as a Commissioner<br />
with the Northern Ireland Judicial<br />
Appointments Commission since 2005.<br />
He is also a former member of the Judicial<br />
Studies Board for Northern Ireland and<br />
held the position of Judge in Residence<br />
at Queen’s University Belfast.<br />
Sir Ronald was appointed Visitor to the<br />
University by the Queen in 2004. He stood<br />
down as Visitor in July 2014 following<br />
10 years in the role. During that time he<br />
made a significant contribution to the<br />
work of the University, including many<br />
recommendations that have helped shape<br />
the University’s processes and procedures.
