Ulster University Graduation 2014 08 Distinguished Teaching Fellowship Awards 2014-15 Dr Catherine Hack Belfast/Jordanstown – Monday 15 December, 11.00am Dr Catherine Hack is subject partnership manager (SPM) for the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences and a lecturer in the School of Biomedical Sciences. As SPM she manages partnerships with Further and Higher Education institutions at access, foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level, both within the UK and internationally. Dr Hack’s interaction with staff and students from across the FE/HE sectors provides valuable insights into the issues that concern those returning to education or studying part-time – particularly flexible learning opportunities, the benefits and barriers of learning online, employability and retention. At the heart of her learning and teaching philosophy is recognition of the need for flexible, student-centred delivery to promote independent, life-long and life-wide learning that enables students to take ownership of their own learning. Dr Hack has designed, delivered and disseminated innovative learning resources which support the provision of authentic, inquiry-based learning activities. These novel teaching tools and approaches – using new media and technology – have empowered students to transform their educational experience. Dr Clare Carruthers Belfast/Jordanstown – Monday 15 December, 11.00am Dr Clare Carruthers, lecturer in the Ulster Business School’s Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management, teaches a range of modules at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Through her creative and innovative approach to the use of technology facilitated learning (TFL), as well as championing the Ulster Principles of Assessment and Feedback for Learning, she has shown a clear commitment to the University’s Learning and Teaching agenda and strategy. Her research interests include engaging students in the assessment and feedback process, the use of digital technologies for assessment and feedback, and on-line learning environments to enhance the student learning experience. Through self-reflection and engagement with students, colleagues and external examiners, Dr Carruthers has identified areas of best practice. She has sought to disseminate her knowledge to support the professional practice of others and to influence support for student learning. Her advocacy of a range of evidence-based learning activities has made a valuable contribution to promoting excellence, supporting colleagues, influencing support for student learning and informing future policy.
