Order of Ceremony<br />

Members of the congregation are requested to take their seats<br />

before the entry of the academic procession. The congregation<br />

will stand as soon as the academic procession enters the hall.<br />

The proceedings will begin with the Academic Procession.<br />

Opening of the Graduation Ceremony<br />

The Chancellor or Vice-Chancellor, whichever is presiding,
will declare<br />

the Graduation Ceremony open for the presentation of awards and<br />

ask members of the congregation to be seated.<br />

The congregation will then sit.<br />

Opening Address<br />

The Presiding Officer will deliver an address to the congregation.<br />

Conferment of Awards<br />

The Presiding Officer will say, “In accordance with the wishes of the<br />

Senate and by virtue of the authority vested in me, I have conferred<br />

degrees and other academic distinctions of the University of Ulster<br />

on those named in the Conferment List approved by the Senate.”<br />

Presentation of Honorary Graduate/Awardee<br />

The Presiding Officer will call upon a senior member of the University<br />

to present the Honorary Graduate or Awardee, following which he will<br />

bestow the honorary degree or award.<br />

The Dean and the candidates from the appropriate Faculty will rise.<br />

Presentation of Candidates<br />

The Dean will present candidates individually for their award. As his or<br />

her name is called, each candidate will go forward to the Presiding Officer.<br />

Members of staff from Student Administration will issue candidates with<br />

their degree or diploma certificate prior to their return to their seat.<br />

Address by Honorary Graduate<br />

If an honorary degree has been awarded, the Honorary Graduate will<br />

address the congregation.<br />

Address by Graduating Student<br />

A representative of the student body will speak on behalf of those graduating.<br />

Closing Remarks<br />

The Presiding Officer will draw the ceremony to a close and invite the<br />

new graduates to join the academic procession.<br />

The congregation will rise and remain standing until the academic<br />

procession, including the graduates and diplomates, has left the hall.<br />

The Academic Procession<br />

The Academic Procession will leave the hall in reverse order of<br />

precedence to that of entry. The new graduates and diplomates<br />

will join the procession, following the academic staff out of the hall.<br />
